      That's really an accurate build Donn, I'm impressed. Just a solution to that annoying cable and an extra handle to push from the other side too and it's perfect. But do be careful pushing that spinning blade in the slippery snow conditions. I was glad the sawdust made it all a bit less slippery. But love the machine, nice lumber you made there.

    Donn, you're just great. You got a very good sawmill, she let the log go as if she was driving with a knife. The boards are all flat, neat. And everything you needed, you did everything with your own hands. A trailer with a manipulator, a saw, I did everything myself. Well done, my respect to you. Thank you for the good, kind video.

    Best thing about a swing blade sawmill is you get the sized lumber you want right away without having to resaw it like with other sawmills. And as you stated in other comments, minimal handling of the log. A job well done Donn. Very impressed with your build skills.

    Donn, I can't possibly express how impressed I am at your accomplishments! The sawmill, the ATV, the trailer, the ARGO, the house, the shop remodel.... you've accomplished more in your life already than most people will in a lifetime. Was the log in this video an Ash tree? As a man in my '50's, who used an Alaskan chainsaw mill for many years, please let me caution you to be safe with that circular saw blade, when they bite, they bite HARD; kickback can occur very fast when hitting metal, or the blade becoming pinched for any reason. Awesome job!

    Something you could add on the claw is two lasers. The dots would give you an idea where the center of the log is regardless of where it is. Kinda like how ROVs have that 10 cm laser sight to tell the explorers what size the things they're pointing at are.
    One other thing, you could add a pole nearby with a loose spring and attach the feed wire to that, that way, it's not in your way when you're moving the carriage. As you're sitting when you're cutting, probably on the other side of the saw with an extension to bring the wire to the center of the mill.

    • @arsadorap3619

    • @julienrichard-1076
      @julienrichard-1076 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was going to suggest a simple jig to hang on the beam that lines up with the tip of the blade so it's easy to know where the first cut will be, but lasers would be good too!

      Dude, you have half a thousand comments and still manage to answer lots of them :) no wonder you get stuff done, you just are able to. I had several my projects work first try. But they took very long to finish, because every step was thought over and every action was evaluated to match the plan, the idea. Many people dash head on, take the results, improve on something and voila, finish five times quicker. I don't know which way is better. If I try to do things quick, I make mistakes and sometimes this means no finish at all.

    Great! but one recomendation. Make a brake that holds saw while it is spining, to protect yourself from it if it accedantly slides in to you while you take boards away.

    Excellent work!
    Imagine having a little button you could press on a portable pendant that just advances the saw in Y (the short axis I guess) by a set amount! You could set it to 5cm with a stop and then just press a button to save half your trips!
    I didn’t realise how BIG it is! Walking around the machine actually takes some time haha

    Wow I just seen some of your other creations and seeing this in action with your 4x4 log trailer in action just puts everything together amazing craftsmanship. Your machining and fabrication are simplistic yet so functional they make total sense. I wish engineers would absorb some of your means & methods the world would be a much better place lol. Sir you have a Ph D in engineering in my opinion.

    That was a great test run of the swing blade sawmill. The boards look quite uniform. The electric motor didn't even break a sweat cutting this log into lumber. Time to start your logging operation, so that you can build the lumber shed and the solar kiln. 😁

    • @DonnDIY
      @DonnDIY  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      First thing would be a sawmill shed though 😀

  • @sueastside

    2 windshield wiper motors on the width/depth controls on the end wired to some simple controls on the carriage to save on walking and you'll have enough lumber for a giant workshop in no time!

    • @DonnDIY
      @DonnDIY  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I can also set the log closer to the operator end to avoid walking so much. At the moment I'm trying to keep the sawmill manual and simple to avoid higher maintenance costs. 👍

    Very nice! Took me a long time into the build to understand where this would be going to. But I understand why you prefer it to the sawmill type. Will be interesting to see the final adjustments and modifications- looking forward to that video! Cheers!

    This is awesome! Some improvements, that you may have already thought of:
    A graduated dial for your z, and y and y axis
    a cable chain for that cord
    a way to adjust the z and y from your carriage, that way you dont have to keep walking back to it
    some sort of bed with hold downs so you can keep the log from shifting as the weight redistributes
    maybe an automatic x axis travel? so that you could stand in one spot, and it travels down, pivots, cuts the board out, and all you have to do is retrieve the piece it cut?
    lasers to see where the cut will be
