Sawing Dimensional Lumber - Swingblade Sawmill BUILD Ep.12

- I built this circular swingblade sawmill from scratch. The function of the mill is in its name "swingblade" - the blade swings 90 degrees making it possible to cut both ways while moving the carriage up and down the log resulting in dimensional lumber in one pass. I built a chainsaw mill ten years ago and milled lumber that I used for my cabin / sauna house project. Then I built a bandsaw mill five years ago and used the cut lumber to build a partition in my barn I currently call my workshop. Both of them worked great, bandsaw mill was faster than chainsaw mill for sure. But I think I there's an even faster mill and swingblade sawmill in my opinion is just that. There are different types of swingblade sawmills, one type utilizes a railway system where the saw carriage rides on rails so both rails are in the way when loading the logs. This is a beam-type mill where the saw carriage is suspended on a single beam over the log that sits on the ground fixed by a couple of wedges so it doesn't roll off while cutting. There is no need to clamp the log down, there's no need to move and turn the log. Cut depth and width adjustments are all made on the sawmill beam end frames. I think this design is ingenious! And it cuts great!
This sawmill build is based on www.turbosawmill.com "Manual Mill" design and it is patent pending.

1st de-construction video of Donn ever😂🎉
That's really an accurate build Donn, I'm impressed. Just a solution to that annoying cable and an extra handle to push from the other side too and it's perfect. But do be careful pushing that spinning blade in the slippery snow conditions. I was glad the sawdust made it all a bit less slippery. But love the machine, nice lumber you made there.
It turned out to be a very functional machine.🧐👍
Just need a flexible cable channel for the annoying cable in the middle of walking area and that’s it, another perfect machines built by DonnDIY👍🏼😎🇵🇷
It’s like a kid getting a bike for Christmas: “I don’t care if it’s snowing, I wanna ride my new bike” 😊
Absolutely!😀
Or the climate has not understood the present wisdom of the stage.
I love the adage it’s my train set so I’ll play any time I want, it’s working perfectly, just a bit mor tinkering, see if u can make a gantry for the electric cable to keep it out of your way, take care
Great job man!
Thanks a bunch!🙏🙏
Well I guess the next project is an overhead cable guide 😂
Excellent sawmill, @Donn! You have all the right to be proud of having built all of this yourself, incredible! ❤❤❤
Yup, cable has to be installed somehow.👍
@@DonnDIYspiral bungee power cord. I’m sure you have seen them somewhere.
@@DonnDIY Maybe a drag chain
Build a base to hold wood, please cover the motor shaft to prevent something from getting pulled in add an additional push bar and maybe a laser to view the next cut. :)
Very cool Sawmill...!👍🥳👍
Thanks!
Best thing about a swing blade sawmill is you get the sized lumber you want right away without having to resaw it like with other sawmills. And as you stated in other comments, minimal handling of the log. A job well done Donn. Very impressed with your build skills.
Thanks. That's right, handling the log and material only one time is a time saver.
@@DonnDIY the shovel under the front of the log could serve as a sky/sledge and ease the hauling uphill 3:10
The lumber looks very good, probably better than the output of most sawmills.
Amazing job, Donn. It's nice to see how your inventions work. You have a brilliant mind!
If I say so myself.
🙏🙏🙏
I agree!!
Donn, you're just great. You got a very good sawmill, she let the log go as if she was driving with a knife. The boards are all flat, neat. And everything you needed, you did everything with your own hands. A trailer with a manipulator, a saw, I did everything myself. Well done, my respect to you. Thank you for the good, kind video.
Now That's A Saw Mill !!! You built a fantastic Mill Donn and it does a great job right from the start. Congratulations. Thanks for sharing this build with us it was a great trip and fun to see it materialize. Stay safe and keep up the good work and videos. Fred.
Thank you Fred for sticking around for all that time.🙏🙏🙏
It's a pleasure watching you and how you have improved through the years and watching your family grow. Fred.@@DonnDIY
A fine job my friend, your whole operation is fantastic! An ATV with a power train driven trailer that has a claw crane to perfectly set up the logs you've just cut down in an awesome sawmill you've just made, all designed, built, and assembled by you!! I don't think it can get anymore super badass than that. You're the man! 👍💪
Outstanding!! The fact that the tip of the blade is in the same location whether its horizontal or vertical is amazing. Well done sir!!
It's just math and geometry.👍😛
@@DonnDIY yes, but not only did you figure it out but you also actually built it to the correct specs with fantastic precision
Something you could add on the claw is two lasers. The dots would give you an idea where the center of the log is regardless of where it is. Kinda like how ROVs have that 10 cm laser sight to tell the explorers what size the things they're pointing at are.
One other thing, you could add a pole nearby with a loose spring and attach the feed wire to that, that way, it's not in your way when you're moving the carriage. As you're sitting when you're cutting, probably on the other side of the saw with an extension to bring the wire to the center of the mill.
Or you can have the cable hanging on a cable between the pillars, like it's managed on gantry or jib cranes.
ooow lets get a mac out and turn it into a CNC
I was going to suggest a simple jig to hang on the beam that lines up with the tip of the blade so it's easy to know where the first cut will be, but lasers would be good too!
Great adaptation of the Lucas mill. Ive run these many times. Great way to pump out dimensional lumber and heart wood beams.
wow great job and looks like a keeper nice rough lumber
Love this build. Thank You for sharing. God Bless
Thank you for watching!
Lumber ready for immediate use...you can't beat that. Well done.
There are few things in life as rewarding as seeing something in your head, building it and then using what you have created. A very good job well done Sir! Many thanks for bringing us along for the journey.
Many thanks for sticking around for that long. Cheers!🙏
I love my bandsaw mill but these saws are so cool for pumping out dimensional lumber in a hurry. Great build my friend. 🤘🇺🇸👍
I loved my bandsaw as well but I was/am cutting mainly dimensional lumber. This swingblade suits my needs better.
Thank you Doon for making us part of your work. I congratulate you from Puerto Rico.
As you always say so eloquently: it works like a glove! Beautiful machine, Donn! As long as you grow your own trees, you can earn a lot of money with this sawmill.
🙏🙏🙏
Truly impressive Donn. The ease from going between horizontal and vertical, and getting the blade to meet smack in the corner is pretty to watch. Another great build.
Cheers! The ease getting dimrnsional lumber with this mill is sensational (for me). Real time saver.👍
Donn, I can't possibly express how impressed I am at your accomplishments! The sawmill, the ATV, the trailer, the ARGO, the house, the shop remodel.... you've accomplished more in your life already than most people will in a lifetime. Was the log in this video an Ash tree? As a man in my '50's, who used an Alaskan chainsaw mill for many years, please let me caution you to be safe with that circular saw blade, when they bite, they bite HARD; kickback can occur very fast when hitting metal, or the blade becoming pinched for any reason. Awesome job!
Man, donny is anything you can not do! Awesome brother!! My hat is off to you sir!
Nothing beats the first board off a new mill one has built himself. Great job!
🙏🙏🙏
People like you built the civilization.
Hi, awesome machine you have made, well done. Many thanks from UK.
👍👍
Once again Donn you have created purpose built tools that not only work as intended but, from what I can see, wildly exceed expectations! Thank you for another enjoyable build series! Well done!
Thanks for following along.🙏 I finally managed to finish it. Next I have to take on a project that is smaller in size maybe and takes less time to build.😀
It’s a beast. Two people could make short work of a log with that thing. Great job
Thanks!🙏
Now you should build a barn around it and the path up to it!? I’m picturing a barn big enough to stack logs on one side of the trailer and the new sawmill on the other side of the trailer with a path through the middle to pull the trailer in and out!? So much potential and opportunity for years to come!! Great video, builds up my own wish’s for the future!
Yes, absolutely.👍
This is so cool finally seeing it in action. I never realized that the shaft of the blade and the guard could slip past the log for unlimited cutting depth. Awesome !
Yup 👍
Absolutely amazing, love how this works, and your craftmanship is exceptional, very pro!
Thanks!
Very cool to see three of your projects all working together.
Cheers!
That sir is a very amazing machine. I have seen the videos of some other manufacturers versions of this saw. Your machine is definitely right up there. Great job
Cheers!
Nice work Donn! That looks like it’s working really well 👍 so awesome!
Cheers Mike! It works really well indeed.🤙I'm waiting for the two day blizzard to stop so I can maybe get some more logs for sawing.😀
Ok. Now I get it. I wondered why you went to all the trouble, but that thing is awesome. It turns out lumber in a hurry.
Yup, the time invested in building this mill really pays off while using this mill.👍
Absolutely a great job!! Looks like it works great. Add a simple cable and pulley festoon for the power cord and it will be off the ground and away from your feet. Hope to see more of this sawmill. 😊
Yep.👍
Awesome, thank you for sharing, always a pleasure starting my sunday morning with your project 👍👍👍👍
One thing ya might consider is a green lazer line for both planes that way you don't have to keep eyeballing it on new set. Set up a second rack on top with a plastic drag chain for your power supply. Love seeing it work tho. Great job building it.
Yup, all these updates are coming.👍
🙏🙏
Nice Work!!! I really like this saw and has been added to extensive project list. Thinking I will go hydraulic on the drive rather than electric. Again, Nice work!!!
🙏🙏👍
I can already see your next project, an overhead cable trolly, and motorized cutter head/height/depth control by RC. 😜 thank you for posting, as always, looking forward to your next project whatever that might be. 👍
Wow! That thing works amazing! Just how you planned it. Well done Sir! 👍👍
Hey Donn, that is cutting through that log like butter and it all lines up perfectly.
Super tool, just great! 👍💪✌
Thats one hell of a mill you've built there Don.
Thank you!
It's wonderful how you work perfectly, congratulations and thank you very much for your videos!
Thanks fro watching!
Excellent work!
Imagine having a little button you could press on a portable pendant that just advances the saw in Y (the short axis I guess) by a set amount! You could set it to 5cm with a stop and then just press a button to save half your trips!
I didn’t realise how BIG it is! Walking around the machine actually takes some time haha
I love this !! Look at all that nice wood the grain is amazing !! It worked so well the fruits of your labor has paid off for sure !!👍👍👍
Don't be really tired and I hope that after successfully testing this good saw, the fatigue of making it will be gone!
I live in Iran and I really enjoy watching what you do and I hope to be able to create a small workshop for myself in the future!
I hope you are always healthy and wealthy with your loved ones!
Congrats on finishing a project, Donn. Those good results are very well deserved.
Thank you.🙏 I'm glad everything worked first try.👍
Dude, you have half a thousand comments and still manage to answer lots of them :) no wonder you get stuff done, you just are able to. I had several my projects work first try. But they took very long to finish, because every step was thought over and every action was evaluated to match the plan, the idea. Many people dash head on, take the results, improve on something and voila, finish five times quicker. I don't know which way is better. If I try to do things quick, I make mistakes and sometimes this means no finish at all.
Congratulations.
It turned out really good.
Thank you very much!
Bloody awesome, the entire process.
Really nice looking lumber!
Works great by the looks, nice looking grain on the timber. The bit left would make a nice countertop
That was a great test run of the swing blade sawmill. The boards look quite uniform. The electric motor didn't even break a sweat cutting this log into lumber. Time to start your logging operation, so that you can build the lumber shed and the solar kiln. 😁
First thing would be a sawmill shed though 😀
@@DonnDIY Good point, considering the amount of snow in your area already. LOL
More than glad to have watched from the beginning! Excellent creation Donn. This should push you over a million!
Why not... Any million sounds great!😛😀
It has been a greate build series and the end result speaks for itself. Nice job mate👌
Thanks man! Always enjoying your build series as well.🤙Mighty fine job you're doing there on the island.😀
That’s some awesome work you have done to get such beautiful wood it’s amazing!
Bravo! A grand success!
It must be so rewarding to get to use the items you design and make with you own hands... Well done. It works a treat.
I'd say though, it might be an idea to try and fix the cable up at high level, to avoid tripping over it or of any risk it could get caught in the saw itself.
It is very satisfying to get stuff you've been working on actually functioning as intended.😀
Pretty good! 😁
Congrats on another great build!
Thank you very much!
🙏🙏
What a fantastic beast of a machine Donn! Very satisfying to watch those boards coming off that log which had only just come out of the forest using all your other amazing machines! 😁👏
Totally mesmerising and completely absorbing!
I guess it passed the test! 😁
It passed the test with flying colours. I am exceptionally happy with the result. Definitely worth the hassle to build one. I hope it's a keeper.🤙
Outstanding job! I have been contemplating a band mill for a couple of years now you have me thinking about a swing blade mill... Congratulations on the first trial success!
I'm glad I'm able to show you the benefits of a swingblade sawmill as well. 👍 I've had a bandsaw as well and prefer the swingblade for sure.🙏
That's an impressive machine you've made, which looks to have great precision. Also impressed by the 3 phase outlet you've set up, and the star-delta switch.
Congratulations from Argentina, excellent work. Here we are too poor to face a project like this
This project was cost friendly. If you can get your hands on an electric motor and a blade then most of the cost is already taken care of. I think I spent less than a 1000$ on this project in materials.
Whoa! Tool envy! Nice rigs man. Kiitos
Cheers!🙏
That saw Mill is awesome Donn
Awsome bulid, great Idea. Now you have lumber you can make a new bigger workshop 😍😍😍😍
Yes!🤞🤘
Your work speaks for itself. Great job !
Never any doubt Donn! Good job!! Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for watching!
Wow I just seen some of your other creations and seeing this in action with your 4x4 log trailer in action just puts everything together amazing craftsmanship. Your machining and fabrication are simplistic yet so functional they make total sense. I wish engineers would absorb some of your means & methods the world would be a much better place lol. Sir you have a Ph D in engineering in my opinion.
How efficient. Awesome job mate. Keep up the great engunity
Thanks! 🙏
Adding the cord in a cable chain along the beam so it rolls with the saw might make it easier/less annoying to use! Great seeing this project come together.
Yup, cable management coming.🤙
Well done Sir, very well done!
Swingblade is the way to go, I see
If you're anything like me then yes. 😀
Awsome , very nice machine !!! congratulations
Laser is a good idea.👍
Good job Donn beautifully done
Thank you!
Time to make a log skidding nose cone now 🤔Congratulations on the first trial success! 👍
Yes, thanks!
Absolut phantastisch! Respekt! Grüße aus good old germany;):D
I can tell you were thinking.. more power. Needs more torque. 😉
The rip blade geometry works, but you can hear the drag and the kerf closes in. Of course that could because both the wood and air being so dry.
Good results and a successful test run. 👍😁👍
I didn't push it to the limit due to the inefficient vertical sawblade guard that sprayed sawdust into my face. I'll make a better guard and maybe swap out the motor pulley to get the blade rpm down from 2800 to 2400 so the blade speed is optimal and then try again.🤙5.5kW motor is more than enough I'd say torque wise.👍
Nice work! It looks like all those cust are so clean and even, so I gues the machine is pretty precise.
I’ll tell you what that was really something to see I could not figure out what the heck your building but to cut your own lumber. That was Awesome I think you need to get a Patent on it and have it mass produced there’s plenty of people now days building off grid that would be the perfect machine to have the why I really enjoy watching you Not a lot of talking like some do and more get down to basics you deserve a million Subscribers thanks for making my day I live in Southern Iowa your the best
This design is already patented (patent pending) by turbosamwill.com and they mass produce these. I liked the design the moment I saw it and had to build one for my personal use. And I am super happy with it.👍
Not ordinary way to cut the boards. Very interesting idea. I guess you will add some mechanism for pushing the cutting part by the electric motor and some gears for rotate to make cutting more easily. Thanks for the video!
interesting reading the comments to upgrade and improve i imagine will be made too
i would think about having a bunk made to allow you to turn the log into an 8x8 post or beam to
comprehensive you did an extraordinary job in both builds
Krásná práce, jen tak dál 👍
Love it when a plan comes together. Just wish you could guard that blade more, be careful.
Awesome! Great build very well done!! ❤
Thank you!
great build Donn!
Thank you!
