I'm lucky to have both the R8 and the 800i, and for me the 800i is just in a different league compared to the R8, the mid range is to die for, and the base response is very honest, over all, the 800i for me offers detail, with amazing midrange, and great base response. My setup is, Audiolab M Dac, Buchardt S400, Willsenton 800i.

I bought boxes of tubes and various transformers. Saved the 300b 845 and 287 ect. the transformers for set up went to japan for MC projects. I keep some stuff packed away because If i need money ever I know I have a good stash.

Willsenton R800i 805 tube rolling thus far:
1 x Mullard M8162 (12at7 equivalent) & 2 x Sylvania 6sn7GTA T-plate. This achieved a much better sound with a slightly warmer midrange and a sweet top end while maintaining a nice bass with plenty of texture and tone. Decided then to add the PSVane 300B Hi-fi Series which gave me even more clarity and warmth. Lastly replaced the stock rectifier to Svetlana 5U4G.
Next will be 2 x PSVane 805 Acme Series & 2 x Takatsuki 300B but holding off since that will be a hefty investment of $3500 ...For now I am content and reached my own audio nirvana. The vocals and midrange are to die for.

Thank you for that sound demo at the end. Having been out of the audiophile news world for the last 20 years, (old curmudgeon here) all this DAC/Streaming/Cloud/Lossless jargon is a bunch of voodoo crazy talk to me still (yes, still trying to break free of the “1/0/1/0’s should all sound the same” frame of mind). Your little demonstration blew that WAY out of the water - and that was just from listening on my iPhone8. I guess it means now I’m a “believer”, unfortunately I’m not sure what it is I believe in, but the journey is sure fun.

I have a dolly, costs like $30.00 at Lowe’s . Very easy to use. Seems like you would have bought one long ago. So it runs very hot, tubes are expensive and raises your electric bill. I thought all tube amps raises your electric bill. I run a 2325 old Marantz receiver and it’s a constant 500watts even at idle. So anything putting out power uses more than a cheap piece of trash. I have to state I’ve owned and have used my old receiver pretty much daily for over 40 years and only take the cover off every few years to blow the dust out with a air compressor. That’s all the servicing it has ever had. I do think it’s time to update. I think I will have it serviced and keep rocking as it still will be cheaper to update it than replace. It sounds very good ! Thank you for convincing me what a Wonderful piece I have !

Remembering when everything used to be tubes and as soon as I had the feeling that something was not performing properly I would take the tubes out and bring it to my local electronic shop where they had a big tester anything that needed to be replaced I would go right over to the sales counter and purchase new prices were reasonable now I just recently checked them anywhere from $10 to $100 a piece and in many cases they need to be replaced in pairs.

Thomas, you are doing a wonderful job in explaining this amp to the hifi world! I have owned R800i for about half a year, and have tried to roll several tubes. To quote what @Rachael Warlond said also to echo what Thomas mentioned in this video, R800i is an end-game-alike tube amp if you want to chase the perfection in the midrange. Also, I echo what @Rachael Warlond said about tube rolling (but keep in mind that the synery is important here). For the topic of equipment synergy, Thomas has a wonderful video. With the right equipment matching, this amp is able to create an unbelievable sound signiture. Also this amp is very sensitive to tube rolling, which is a very good thing from my view.

My first amplifier as a 14 year old boy was 120 watts rms per channel. Frequency response was rated at 5 - 100,000 had a huge round DC Transformer next to two giant capacitors. That thing was amazing.
About 10 years down the road I purchased a Bob Carver amplifier. 500 watts rms.
It did not sound any better. The ONLY difference is the sound would carry farther. I had people coming to my residence complaining from almost the end of my block. That's how I understood what it was offering.
I sold it 4 months later. I still have my first amplifier 45 years later. Do you really think this Chinese copy will last? I doubt it.

    • @mavmav6555
      @mavmav6555 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

It's point to point wired. If something gets fried it's repairable. Should last as long as you want. It's not like it has a priority ss circuit board that is discontinued rendering it useless. Everything is available from a electronics store off the shelf. There is no reason it shouldn't last, and it's repairable with the p2p wiring. It's great you found your end all amp and have had it 45 years. I don't have 45 years left, but this probably will do.

That amp has my name written all over it ! And I can lift it !!! Great review. Still, their 300B class A offering is nice, too, at around 8 watts per side. Of course that doesn't compare with 48 watts per side class A, but if you don't need the power, it's a much more sensible amplifier that may have sonic benefits to it, due to its history, when compared to the 805A. Decisions, decisions.
I love the beautiful midrange of class A, but I find myself needing to boost the lows and highs or scoop out some midrange at times. This is hard to do on a tube amp with no tone controls. You'd have to add, dare I say it, an EQ. Happy Listening 🎶🎵 folks.

The large SET tubes (211, 845, 805, 212) tend to have lower output impedance than pentodes. This means, other variables controlled for, there will be less variable with a real Speaker load and empirically more linear.
Sylvania micanol (brown base) JAN-CHS 6SN7 tubes are military grade and tend to sound fantastic. Especially for the money. Genalex Gold Lion 300B's offer a noticeable step up in performance as well. WE805's from PS Vane, Linlai, or Shuguang make it sound like another amp.

The Luxman is an amp that, while it costs more, will last a very long time and will sound good for that time, it's Luxman. The second point is that it's only 10 watts if I remember so you really can't compare it to a more powerful amp. The AB EL84's aren't pushed hard and I'll bet it doesn't get anywhere close to the Willsenton heat wise, so for me I'll take the little Luxman over the Willsenton and carefully match my speakers to fit it.
I have been designing tube preamps awhile and I have been refining over and over the 6922 which I think is a very good tube (I'm using the reissued Gold Lions) I think with a great preamp and a class D or good A/B power amp you can get very close to a tube power amp and beat some respected amps too boot.

    • @ThomasAndStereo
      @ThomasAndStereo  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Yup, I should have clarified then in the video, with a Luxman, you have to carefully match your speaker while with the R800i, you don't have that worry. Meaning if you have speakers you already love and not sensitive, no worries.

Hello Thomas. Thanks for your great, in-depth reviews. With the lack of audio stores anymore, it's nice to have audio reviewers, such as yourself, to be able to try equipment out and comment on them for us prospective buyers.
I own a Willsenton R8 integrated amp. I'm using it with a pair of Paradigm Premier 200B speakers along with a RSL Speedwoofer sub. You mentioned in one of your reviews that the R8 could be greatly improved by replacing it's stock tubes. What tubes would you recommend to replace the Kt88s with, the 6SN7s with and the 6SL7s with? I listen to mostly acoustic, jazz and rock styles of music.

I'd like to point out the R800i has a few design issues. The left and right channels share power nodes, and they require bypass caps (and resistors). But they have none. Also, there's not enough filtration for hum. How do I know this? I sent mine to Scott Frankland to get fixed when it stopped biassing correctly.
I like this channel, but the issue with audio reviewers is that most don't have the technical expertise to identify design issues. They simply review a piece of equipment, and then it's on to the next. To be clear, I don't have the expertise either, but Scott does. His CV is hard to beat in the audio field.
Now, I do like the R800i enough that I told Scott to fix the design flaws and upgrade resistors and caps, but rectifying the design flaw issues is a $600 to $800 parts and labor charge, not something most people are wanting to do after spending almost $3000 on an integrated amp.

Coming from the NAD C368 digital-hybride integrated amplifier, I bought a Cayin cs-55a with kt88 tubes. This was a huge difference. I still appreciate this step, even if I'm still driving the stock Cayin tubes. I'm already into looking to which tubes to upgrade, if those guys will once a day dying (2-3 hours a day I'm listening).
But what I will not do is upgrading to another amplifier. Yes, there will be another big new differences. For sure I would appreciate.
But this is already on a really enjoyable level.
An this is the same for the Willsenton R8 in comparison to the 800i.
So, the thing about is maybe to get aware of the possibilities and decide where to go, keeping in mind that there will be always a better decision.

Oh Thomas Thomas Thomas. You need to change to much better tubes to get the best out of the R800i. Beware, endgame amp by using these tubes.
    For outright clarity:
    1 x PSVane 12ax7-s Art Series & 2 x PSVane CV181 Mk II Art Series
    For a bit warmer sound:
    1 x Mullard mil-spec M8162 & 2 x Sylvania 6sn7 late 50s T-plate
    2 x Takatsuki TA-300B
    2 x PSVane 805 Acme Series
1 x Svetlana 5c3s (5u4g equivalent) Made in St Petersburg circa 1960's rectifier tube - balanced.
All tubes tested for matching, while dual triodes also checked for balance between the plates.
BTW, my speakers are the fabulous Concept 500's.
So, how is the sound? OUT OF THIS WORLD. This is absolutely an endgame amp.
BTW, I also own the R8 which I have in another room with a (just recently purchased) pair of Focal Chora 806 with matching Focal stands. Different sound, but lusciously warm sound using Mullard 6ca7 xf2 tubes circa 60s, Sylvania 6sn7 GTA T-plate circa late 50s and MELZ 6sl7 mil-spec 1952. The rectifier tube is also a Sylvania T-plate.

Just came across this video. Thomas & others I need your help. I've fallen for the tube sound. Reisong A10. Yes, not much but I was being cautious. My question is can you steer me in the direction of learning about matching the right tubes to these systems. Also whats the average life of the tubes. How will someone know? Last how do you clean your tubes? I get a lot of dust on my system. Thanks for the great videos. Also is China Hifi a reliable source to purchase from? Compared to 3rd party sellers. Aka on Amazon.
