“A job that slowly kills you.”
Fun fact: Director Grant Gee said that that line was one of main inspirations for the video
What a nightmare. Especially with the song being speed up to an almost comical degree, then slowly down with every failed attempt must’ve been a surreal, horrible experience.
Glad they cut the footage of him crying out of the doc. Can’t believe they continued on after that. Makes sense why he smiled like a maniac when he finally pulled it off.
@GNNASCARFAN 24 the band probably had creative control over the videos, considering how unique they all are, I don't think the label was forcing them
@@hecknoob289 this footage isn’t in the doc tho. That’s why I said I was glad they didn’t include it. This is a bonus.
I was thinking about this too, with the track’s speed constantly going back and forth; it really is like a uniquely modern and disturbing form of of torture. kafkaesque
First time I’ve ever seen Thom Yorke this angry
Even the MTV beach house doesn’t seem that bad in comparison
Yeah, that was virtually performance art. This was downright perturbing..
This is very strange. I feel like I've stumbled upon a CIA torture video. The footage being black and white, him being in water over and over and the creepiness of the music speeding and slowing
Think about it. The setup before filming this is extensive. They have to dry him and everything off, prep the water, and he has to mentally be there to sing, feel the emotion, and hold his breath while waiting for the cue, while being completely still since the film is sped up, and then he has to maintain that when the water escapes to bookend the song and video. Music video shoots don’t just take two hours either. No wonder his eye is twitching. I’d be incredibly stressed out too, but the payoff sure was amazing when they finally capture the lightning in a bottle. Gotta love creating art.
The eye twitching thing is actually because he has an eye conditon lol
Knowing that this was made in one shot
And he had to do it again and again and again
With the song speeding up and slowing down with every fail, honestly surprised it continued after he broke down. That but wasn’t in the documentary.
Takes after takes after TAKES AFTER TAKES!
Thom Yorke is basically drowning himself!
Poor him...
I too would get mad if I had to listen to a nightcore version of No Surprises over and over
Imagine hearing your own distorted voice speed up while also nearly drowning to death
Shit was probably beyond traumatizing
rinnin
I feel so sorry for Thom in this. Imagine the type of pressure he was under to try to nail this. The final version makes it seem easy. Bless him. 🙏
The one thing that really irked me, was when one of the hosts neat the beginning said, "You'll like this, he drowns at the end." But he had such a disdain in his voice when he said it, like he hoped Thom was going to.
News media and professional commenters, always been hopelessly out of touch, dull and boring. The video goes so far over their heads that it's easier to just make vacuous comments like they do at the start the video
3:07 Poor Thom, I can feel his pain. I would rage a lot if I had to do that.
I don't know how he could do this. Probably shouldn't have done this.
2:39 I sometimes wonder if he’s crying or just disgusted
@@okcomputerrrr yeah .... that’s not in the movie. That was an intense time for everyone in the band when you’re being interviewed 6 hours a day being asked “how does it feel to be the saviors of rock n roll?”
That said I know the band wanted to include like the fun moments of that tour, especially go cart racing apparently but the director didn’t think it meshed with the overall theme.
One of my favorite band docs of all time for sure
Wow, that seems very hard
I’ve tried it, however I couldn’t do it the first couple times but I could do it after a few practices.
@@bachandminor3240
It’s probably extra hard for him because he’s quite small
Seeing him cry is like a knife to the chest partnered with a kick to the teeth. Thom hurts my heart, man.
The distorted nightcore version of No Surprises sounds like the typa stuff I'd hear in my nightmares
Someone needs to slap the 3 Sky presenters, hell I'll do it for free. OK Computer is the greatest album of the 90s and beyond. How it did not win the Mercury Prize or a crummy Brit award is still a mystery to me.
Especially the lady 0:21
"It's the most miserable sounding tune I've ever heard"
Aw when he gets mad he hits his head at 2:07 and later in the video he cry’s and gets sad at 2:33 😢 it is probably hard to have your head under water for a long time
This is the most intense video I've ever seen
This still makes me sick. I can't imagine how traumatic it must have been. I could never do it. Period.
traumatic lol... it's an artistic choice most likely made by thom himself.... traumatic, christ! Bit of an overstatement
@@MCart1215 If I went through it, I would be traumatized. I'm sure a lot of other people would be too.
@@slavexcalledxshiver I think your idea of what trauma is has been considerably watered down by popular culture, ngl. Trauma isn't a quirk like TikTok portrays it as lmfao, it's a literal mental scar from a terrifying experience, on par with PTSD.
Now I'm intrigued as to what you think you've been 'traumatised' by lmfao.
@@MCart1215 How presumptuous of you. I am 37 years old and I have never been on social media. You are incredibly judgmental and arrogant. I don't need you to explain trauma or PTSD to me. I was diagnosed 12 years ago and have been through a horrific things far beyond a near-drowning incident. You don't know the first thing about me or what I've endured in my life. Grow the fuck up and keep your shitty, uninformed comments to yourself.
@@MCart1215Well nearly drowning (a few times) in a transparent helmet while being blasted at by a cartoonishly sped up version of your song seems like it’s going to leave you with a horrible memory.
2:49 bro needs a hug
He seems in pain
Well I'm pretty sure he actually has a fear of water bc he almost drowned or something I read it on the actual video but I'm not completely sure
3:07 That is the maddest “fuck” I’ve ever heard from Thom Yorke. I can only imagine how difficult this was to shoot.
2:30 poor thom he was so scared. :(
this scared me so much and I cried tho when I saw him crying and breakingdown.
he was trying his best, the frustration, who knows what was in his mind while making this :(((
De verdad que estaba molesto por no conseguir llegar al final, hay que aplaudir la determinación que tuvo thom para grabar este pedazo del video clip
imagine hearing a night core no surprises while almost drowning and have claustrophobia at the same time, while being in a tank that slowly fills up with water, and have to repeat it multiple times.
0:12 “again, music to cut your wrist to” I take that very personal.
Remember that this was a time when "politicaly correct" things were a thing to laugh to. And that's why they were better times. I can't make a fucking racist joke without people whining nowadays. FUCK i would drown you all like thom, but forever.
@@Tryingmybestsince1999 dude what the fuck, fuck you. Imagine getting mad about society not accepting you doing hateful asshole things.
@@cartersauce1344 wtf are you all idiots? Im sure you are the ones that get offended for everything. “I take that personally, it hurts me” well learn to laugh about yourself fucking kid. You all have serious problems if everything hurts you dumbasses. Life was better before, now this kids get their asses hurt because of nothing.
This is so sad wtf I feel bad for him :'(
Really hard work for that song......
1:08 "I can hear him but i cant see his lips moving" I'm sure these are the type of idiots id want judging my music video when they don't even understand how the making of a music video even works
damn this was actually so much more intense than the movie makes it seem
how do i get this 'offline edit' of the film?
bro all these people acting like it wasnt HIM who wrote the song, AND the video script. its a VISUAL DEPICTION OF THE EMOTION the song carries. there's real depth to this song, thom didn't do this cause video had to get done. he did this so we understand from a visual perspective the words he wrote. creative people sometimes do crazy things so that normal people can grasp the overall theme of a piece. if you've got depression or any mental health issues i'm sure you're not the ones on these comments freaking out as if he's being forced to fake drown himself
2:21 ok now that’s pretty scary he lost it
now get ready for the alvin and the chipmunks cover of no surprises
2:34 Just breaks my heart. Makes me want to give him something nice.
I wish I was there to see this happen in person, it looks so strangely cool
that was hard to watch
And now Sky likes to portray itself as the inventor of the 'Arts'.
In the final result he smiles when water goes off like he finally DID IT
It kinda makes sense that they took a break making music videos for their next album
I'm sad for his face language
So he had to take more than 10 shots to end up with the final scene?! sounds like The Shining all over again! searching for perfection.
this is so nightmarish i honestly can’t watch the music video without feeling a little sick
this video is insane
this looks like a torture method from the 1950s
3:07 if you listen closely you can hear him shouting through the glass tank
Great pfp man
lol that high helium vocal 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Puedo morir en paz :v
are there more clips of this making of? if there is, could you please upload them?
A surprise!
That's crazy
Id be really upset too listening to a sped up version of my fav song of all time, whilst drowning.
A job that slowly kills you tho
Oh Shoot! I knew Thom suffered to make this video,, but no idea how it obviously affected him.❤
Truly suffered for his art then..🌊 Seeing him at 2:35 really is upsetting 😢 Lovee you Thom.😻🌠
How torturous
It would have been nice to have the coach of Avatar 2, to learn how to hold his breath longer (in an alternate dimmension).
Thom screaming profanities after almost every fail is very expected to the human mind.
Is this from Meeting People is Easy?
@@valkyrieellis3990 I have it on vhs as a friend was working on the film 20ish years ago, I don't think there are any other copies of the offline edit of the whole documentary
@@Suttisan78 That is SO fucking cool... I beg that you share this, if you can.
I'd pay for it tbh!!
I'm curious as to why the music has to be sped up while they were filming this sequence.
Can someone explain that to me?
Imagine being drowned while listening to nightcore 😭
What an unpleasant woman
2:20❤️
That's too hard to pull off he almost killed his self
Me watching a movie when a character drown in wather:
Why do they speed the song up?
Probably so he doesn't have to hold his breath for as long of a time
A ce qu’il parait il a failli mourir :/
him casually loosing his freaking mind while under water just kills ms
Why the song
Is fast fowarded?
é pro stunt, enquanto a música é acelerada, o vídeo é desacelerado pra parecer que o Thom fica mais tempo se afogando
Can't watch sorry
No surprises - nightcore
I hope those people at that talk show got to watch the failed attempts, they would've gotten a good laugh at seeing Thom Yorke suffer
😂😂😂 He is so funny.. The best
@@tumortuner yea ofc, man almost drowning several times in a row. peak comedy.
how th is a man trying hard and get choke on water several times for art funny to you?
Nothing out of this world... don't be dramatic guys LOL
Technically, Thom was listening to a nightcore version of No Surprises while almost drowning
Sounds horrible
actual fucking torture
🤣🤣🤣
I would hang myself is I have to listen to nightcore versions of music
And he had to fucking do it over and over again lmao
