    That stream is much like the ones I fish in the Sierras. That is by far my favorite type of fishing. I'll fish lakes sometimes but usually, it'll be just about like that one. I'm also a spinner guy and will usually start with a #4 PM in black/gold which it looks like what you were using. I have others of course but that's my usual go to at least for starters. This year, I am experimenting with dressed PM lures, but it's too soon to make judgements. Too much late snow and the streams are still very high and cold. Going to go downhill about 1000' in elevation this afternoon to see what happens.

    One of my favorite types of fishing is just like this vid in the Doe River in eastern TN. Small spinners are deadly rigged as Jordan shows here. Alternatively, fishing a 4" watermelon/red lizard rigged Carolina style will work for both trout and small bass in the much deeper runs.

    Jordan! Yes! This how I fish always. Been getting cutthroat this way... #3’s mostly. Maybe I should use smaller or bigger? I figured it was great for most types of trout/steelhead. Although, I will say, last fall I used a spinner to catch my biggest salmon. I started at the bottom of the hole like I always do.... maybe I got luck. Why do you ever start above the whole ( if they are facing you) ?

    I like yo use 6 lb. Fluorocarbon
    with a very small slider weight attached double barrel swivel and put a 15" long 4lb. florocarbine leader on with a chartreuse 1/4 Oz Rooster tail on. Was fishing a windy country stream in VT. that started off with geo bolders and swift pools and open fast flows and wide bend curves with brush scrubs. 1/2 hr got 8 Brookies.

    Just found your channel - great source to learn more about trout fishing. I am a FL offshore fisherman so this trout fishing is foreign to me lol. I notice you mention you were using 10# braid. Are you using a fluorocarbon leader, or any leader at all? And if so, how long is a typical leader? I’ve seen some guys who just load reel entirely w fluorocarbon line. Interested to hear your thoughts on line vs leader. Thx

    • @jonathanwahlin257
      @jonathanwahlin257 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Believe it or not.... try using a small 2 foot rod. Use a clear, trear-drop bubble (also called a adjusta-bubbel) Tie on a swivel, then use about 3ft of leader. Tie on a number 2 hook. Thread on half a night-crawler. (Use split-shot size according to depth of water you're fishing) Toss up stream/river and let the current drift it down into the holes your fishing.

  • @grinchfox

    So I’m trying to emulate the rod and reel set up in somebody’s trout videos. My goal is to get long casts from shore fishing on the lake. I got the Okuma 30 S reel, I picked up a 7 foot ultralight medium action rod from cadence, got the 10 pound braided line. Should I run a 6 pound bumper or is it OK to go with 4 pound or even 2 pound? And then if you had any thoughts on what knot you would use to join the two together? Any help from anybody is much appreciated thank you!

    • @shulooneddy
      @shulooneddy 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, the Panther Martin blades always spin instantly and you can easily feel them vibrating.. Sometimes Mepps and Rooster Tails need a couple jerks back and forth to get them spinning, and then you gotta quickly reel in the extra line, and by then you've missed the sweet spot you were casting into.

    Without panther martins I wouldn't even get outta the truck, they spin in both directions where none of the other do on a guaranteed retrieving downstream, and I carry two rods and first try agressively then a bobber with either a worm or something that looks like a terrestrial bug of some sort, then remember where the trout were going in one direction and as you head back to access point fish those areas, you already know their alley, make that one cast and move on

      You Gay If you’re getting hung up on the rocks then use lighter/smaller lures/spinners. Try the Mepps Agila in size 1 and 0 (sometimes the gold and sometimes the silver work so have both handy. The other thing is to not let the lure sink at all but begin retrieving as soon as it hits the water. Another trick, so to speak, is get rid of the treble hook and replace it with a single (or buy them like that). You’ll snag way less but may miss/lose a fish or two.

    I actually like fishing all those types of waters. I don't believe in passing a opportunity to fish any kind of water. In this case, I basically do what you've shown but with one exception. I rub scent on the spinner blades. If they are watching me I like to grab there attention away by using all their senses so that they're not so focused on me.

    I like using a Mepps Anglia spinner, for me it is the most productive spinner on the market. Brass works best for me. I also like using a fly with a single split-shot, the smaller the better about two feet above the fly. Doesn't matter if the fly is a wet or dry. Nothing better than mountain creeks, away from crowds , the fish are aggressive and fight like crazy. Good video.

    • @rawr6306
      @rawr6306 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      David Worthen Awesome. Another Mepps Agila fan! I use both brass and silver and tend to use #1s. Always carry 0-3 however in both colors and a few skirted. I’ve nailed decent size rainbow in fast tumbles using size 0s simply because it’s so much lighter I can cast upstream and let it stay above the rocks whereas a 2 would ride too deep and snag. I also like to use single hook models of these which are hard to find sometimes so I’ll just buy extras and switch hooks. Sure you’ll miss/lose a few fish but in the catch and release areas it’s so much easier and quicker to get them off the hook. Even trickier are the barbless hook regulation areas.

    Was recently at a small creek in the CO mountains, I’ve been using a brown rooster tail for a few years now. It rarely disappoints. But I’m starting to think I need to change out the hooks on the rooster tail, maybe to something smaller and not the treble hook. the fish would bite, but it’s been hard to land them on the dang hook haha. I feel like they are either biting the actual spoon or the hook is too big. Anyone else have this issue?

    Dang I looked up how to fish in Creeks and streams and I really enjoyed this! I learned alot from this vid. I've been using worms and eggs for the streams and it's been working.

    Fly-Spinning >>>> it's a hybrid spinning and fly fishing rig I have never sen anyone else do this in 30 years.....Fly Spinning is where I use a 4wt 9ft fly rod with a tiny Panther Martin and a long tapered leader and only cast the leader and pull the spinner bach thru the pool and do it over and over progressively working the small pools ( ( no overhead backcast )) just roll cast flicks and sometimes a sneaky bow cast at a super clear open pool .....cheers

    I've had some pretty good luck recently fishing small rivers just like you, but I'm floating a little floating 'Rebel' cricket and or bumble bee and their hitting them. And I'm brand new to trout fishing.

    Love small streams, and creeks.... its relaxing, a break from the the hard core terminal gear for the big boys, get away from people.... ultra light, 6lb test... 0 mepps , gold or silver.. 1/8 ounce... YES! the Thomas lure! 0 mepps,,for the real shallow stuff, Thomas to wobble down in into the deeper stuff, and more current....🎣

    What size single point hook do you use on the little spinners? Are they open eye siwash like we use on the bigger ones for Steelhead and silvers? Most of the little creeks and rivers won’t let you use trebles.

      Tom King Small open eye siwash. Size depends on the spinner your using.

    As someone who struggles with the union knot and tying lines together. What are your thoughts on using Fluorocarbon line for the entire spool? And is it fine to use a barrel swivel instead of tying the lines together? Thank you.

    My preference for streams like that is a 6'6" - 7' 3w fly rod w/a royal coachman (me being in the northeast). Or something that's hatching.

    Living in Boise I have found that wading in the water upstream a good distance and working the water column proves best. Mixed with some overhanging branches adds to some interesting catches. I have more success with spoons thanks to the mentorship of my buddy.

    I have learned a lot from this channel so thankyou. I caught my first trout on a spoon in my whole life two weeks ago thanks to this channel. My preferred method for small rivers and creeks is Tenkara. I either use a dark Kebari or a elk hair caddis. I have had people laugh at my setup then watch me catch a fish 5 min later. What I like about it is the minimalism. I got tired of hauling all the tackle to the backcountry spots i like to go to. I can fit all of my kit in my pocket and the rod telescoped down to about 12 inches. Obviously I don't use this setup on larger rivers but I have been researching getting a larger tenkara rod that is designed for large rivers, it is done in japan.

    Creeks and rivers are by far my favorite and it's always more of a thrill for me to catch them on a 4 or 5wt fly rod with one of my hand furled leaders tipped with about 3-4feet of 4lb mono and a 2 fly setup with my hand tied caddis or mayfly dries and a small hand tied nymph.
