Protecting plants from the frost and freeze

  • Winter is upon our garden with frost, snow, and wind chill. So this weekend I'm looking at how I can protect my outdoor plants by adding a poly cover to our raised bed frames (hoop house) and I'm setting up my heated propagator in the greenhouse to get ready for some December seed sowing.
    The temperatures in Scotland plummeted this week and we're getting snow to go with the hard frosts. It's amazing how much the greenhouse has protected the plants growing in there.

      We were sitting going through the gardening journals last week, I used to trust them to look forward with the weather but not so much at the minute.
      Minus 4 just now… so this might be winter coming … or we might get warmer again… who knows 😂😂😂

    Great a timing!! My first greenhouse is being built this weekend and day 2 it started sleeting. I kept the fire pit nearby lit for warmth and it created a circle of heat bringing the temperature up enough to keep snow from staying on the grass nearby long. Same size as yours and can’t wait to try a few experiments to see what grows! 😊

    Woke up this morning to -35C with a windchill of -47C. I pulled out my seeds and went through my inventory. Going seed shopping online to get the remaining seeds that I need. I grow both flowers and vegetables from seed. Looking forward to setting up my indoor growing shelves and start planting in January. I generally don't put anything out into the greenhouse until mid April and have to heat the greenhouse. I always look forward to your seeding videos starting in January, Merry Christmas, Happy holidays to you and Kate. Wishing you all the best in 2023.

    Hello from New England. I have an 8 ft octagon Greenhouse and this year I'm using soil heater cables in a raised bed. I'm growing cold hardy greens like Pak choy. The temperature has gotten as low as 20° Fahrenheit and the plants are growing a bit very slowly. Planning to grow a lot more vegetables this year. I'm planning on building an 8-ft by 10-ft greenhouse and using heater cables I would swear by them they work very well.

    So -7 C = 19.4 F. I covered our 2 wagons (raised beds☺️) with 6 mil plastic this year. Had lettuce, kohlrabi in one and carrots, beets in second. We were fine til mid/end of November when temp dipped below 20 F too much and too long with no sun. The leaves of lettuce and beets said, that’s it! The carrots of course are fine. So nice to get carrots in December. I wish we could grow lettuce 🥬 in winter. The news here actually stated a couple of times that we have a lettuce shortage!! I couldn’t believe it. We eat from the garden so we don’t go to the store for weeks. For basics we just pop into our convenience shop.
    So I pulled out the trusty sprout jar to get the alfalfa seeds going so we don’t resort to eating hay🤣

    I started to grow veg last year. Grew carrots and potatoes in pots, broccoli, cabbage , kale, tomatoes, courgettes, peppers- unsuccessfully, strawberries unsuccessfully and salads very well. We grew lots of French and runner beans. Really pleased but deciding what to grow when and where a bit difficult so will continue to watch what you do .my space is limited but have removed some plants this autumn to make way for more crops. Love your set up with the hoop beds. I made 2 small ones by cutting some hoola hoops in half and pushing them onto canes and they worked ok ish! Cosmos, Snapdragons, marigolds, zinnias, cornflowers and love in the mist, to name but a few). • @cassielaughlin
      @cassielaughlin ปีที่แล้ว

      @eliandkate oh wow, thanks! It was a task I had when I lived at home with my parents and I heard it was good for the environment to compost food waste so that's an easy one for me. The rest is a bit alien! I'd quite like to keep the grass, I'm not ready for digging beds so anything that looks pretty or is edible and grows in a 12inch diameter pot as I have loads of them. I also accidently grew self seeded poppies under the roses last year so anything that would go in that bed with them would be nice. I'm not ready for a greenhouse or anything too major so I guess I'd be growing from baby plants or sewing in the conservatory. Very motivated by food! What do you think?

    • @eliandkate
      @eliandkate  ปีที่แล้ว

      You absolutely can grow food in pots rather than in beds. In fact on of our channel subscribers has their own channel all about growing just in pots. It’s called Robin’s Container Garden might be worth checking that out.
      But generally think about what you like to eat them from that list you can make a list of the different needs of the plants and work out what might work for you.
      Root veg are pretty good in pots, so maybe carrots, beetroot, radishes that kind of thing. I’ve grown courgettes in pots really successfully. Dwarf beans are another good one and of course salad crops
      Some things like deeper pots than others, but if you don’t have the pots you can grow in bags (those big bag for life ones from the supermarket or the big ikea blue bags are great). I’ve even grown in compost bags that’s I’ve cut in half and turned into a pot.
      The world is your mollusc of choice 😍

    Fun video, (as usual!) As I watched the vid, it occurred to me that there is a guy in the US who uses old fashioned (incandescent) Christmas lights to mitigate the temperature in his tunnels and around his fruit trees. I wonder if that might be a fun experiment for you in your greenhouse? You appear to have electricity, and you could turn the lights on only when the weather forecast is for colder temps.... We are prepping to move house soon so in the early autumn I took some cuttings from all the roses in my garden with the hope of growing them into full roses bushes for my new garden. Only time will tell how that works out! They don’t currently look dead which is better than last years attempt.

    Just finished vid and adding my list. Would like to winter sow in jugs outside all starts this year as it was so easy last year. The mess and room it takes up inside is too much. However, I think the onions, peppers and tomatoes may need more of a start.
    I’m going to try both. It’s a bit confusing as seed packets usually suggest 6-12 weeks prior to frost to transplant time. I’m concerned about pepper and tomato seeds rotting in winter sow jugs. Many start onions in January which I think is too soon. An onion has a set clock to day length and begin bulbing on summer solstice and not sure if that early start is beneficial.
    It’s too warm in the house also and it turns into a jungle so prefer outside. The other thing is I prefer to harvest winter veg like onions later rather than early even though they have a set growth cycle with day length. The potatoes are definitely going in later. It was always Good Friday and I planted a week later and probably later still this year. I like to harvest these later and I really don’t like having to worry about those spring frosts-it’s a pain to cover it all and worry. Can’t remember what veg it is that if frosted tends to make it boot-was it celery?
    Winter sowing in jugs opens up SOooo much more possibilities of what to grow and it takes just a little bit of monitoring once they sprout. Such healthy plants, not leggy and over grown. I have a small lean to greenhouse, but need to figure out a heat sink. The heat mats wouldn’t keep foliage warm enough.
    I have so many seeds from echinacea and butterfly weed and list goes on of what I want to plant. I just seen some prices for plants that would make anyone grow their own. One butterfly weed plant root was $14.99!! A bunch (50-75) of onion plants I bought last year at $8 are now $15+!!!
    My big cost this year is getting the rest of fruit and nut plants because they will take several years to produce to get the mini orchard up to snuff. Excited as I’ve always wanted to grow hazelnuts! Takes up to 4 years for production on most and hope to see them. When you get into the last quarter and your classmates are passing on it rides a bit heavy. So yes, a big expense are bare root stock, especially because I’m still able to plant them🤣🤣
    Just talking about this makes this and shopping for the best varieties almost makes you feel like winter is half over-almost😜

    • @eliandkate
      @eliandkate  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yeah the whole winter sowing in milk jugs thing isn't really something we do here in the UK... I tried it last year just as an experiment and to be honest, didn't see any benefit to it - plant health and strength wise, but maybe it may be a convenience thing :D
      With tomatoes etc, as well as frost dates, it's good to remember they need the soil to be very warm in order to generate. So sowing them in jugs outside might mean they rot off if you sow before the ground/soil is properly warmed up. All a bit juggling act :D

    • @dustyflats3832
      @dustyflats3832 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@eliandkate yes, it’s still experimenting, but also money saving, space and mess saving. The brassicas and most flowers were excellent! I didn’t have to babysit them, no energy used for lights and fan. I don’t have a large space inside and even though I don’t over water I have to watch for mold on top of soil. The coconut coir was a real problem last year. I read that many of the flower seeds do well because of cold treatment and those that may self seed. Depending on winter I sometimes have petunias reseed, but it’s touch and go on most in the wild. I think too, it’s important not to set the jugs out too soon.
      Sorry it wasn’t a win for you. I just learned of it last year and several on TH-cam practice it. Seems to be a craze with some of us.

Onions apart I’m trying to wait until mid February when I’ll sow aubergines and peppers. Last year they were too big, too early. Over winter I’m experimenting with salads and Asian greens in the greenhouses, which are are a bit dilapidated. Even if I lose crops now I still think it’s been a worthwhile experiment. Hi, I have been following you for around a year now and have bought quite a bit of the stuff you have, quad grows and chilli grows which I loved this year, vitopod, which I am looking forward to using in the new year so will be following your advice and also the hotbin, which I am not getting on with at all, I just can’t get it to heat up no matter what I do. 😢 Due to greenhouse build being late I was behind this year but will be following your growing schedule as I am not too far away from you in Stirling. Good luck and look forward to next year. Love your videos. ❤

    • @eliandkate
      @eliandkate  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ok Maureen, we need to get you sorted with the hotbin this year then. The biggest thing I found was that you need to add way more each week than they recommend and you need a much much higher proportion of brown.
      My bin is usually only at the 60 mark over summer when we have heaps of garden waste and usually around 40 in winter cause we have way less to add.
      I’m usually adding about 3 times as much brown as green.

    • @maureenconnelly4416
      @maureenconnelly4416 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, I will try what you are advising. I’ve tried all sorts of combinations so far, I’ve given it a good mix at the weekend and added lots of paper and chopped up cardboard and filled the kick start bottle two days in a row, went out this morning and the lid has frozen shut. 😂

    • @eliandkate
      @eliandkate  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      😂😂😂😂 ours too
      Basically the green creates the heat, so you need to add A LOT of green and very frequently to get the heat but if you don’t add enough brown to deal with the moisture of all that green… it gets wet and compacted, which means no oxygen so not heat.
      So
      Add lots frequently, prob at least 2!or 3 loads a week
      Add maybe 3 times more brown than green, at least but be prepared to up this
      Add the wood chip
      Do mix the top layer when you ad

I did want to do them in my un heated greenhouse next time due to the space they take up. But with all the costs now. Oh you are proper sorted. I’m impressed 😀
      As to your question… technically you aren’t in a zone, that’s a North American thing that’s much more relevant over there because they work with huge expanses of land mass that have similar weather (but also the country as a whole US and Canada) are so big that there can be massive differences from tropical to arctic.
      In the UK, because we are a much smaller landmass and much more affected by mountain and coast(as a percentage of landmass). The zones thing is pretty much not relevant.
      We can huge differences in a tiny difference so we are much better thinking in terms of our own garden and what we know about it. If that makes sense.
      You’ll see all sorts of zones applied to Edinburgh depending on what source you look at. I’ve seen us being in zone 7, 8 and 9 so not helpful.
      Instead get to know your high and low temps, your frost dates and trough dates for big weather changes as well as generic stuff like when is it super wet, windy, dry
