17-Year-Old Struck by Lightning While Doing Yard Work

- A Florida teen is lucky to be alive after being struck by lightning. Daniel Sharkey was doing yard work for a neighbor when he was hit by a bolt of lightning. The 17-year-old was sprawled out on the ground and writhed in pain. His neighbors ran to his side as they called 911. Thankfully, Sharkey survived the lightning strike. He only spent three days in the hospital. Inside Edition's Les Trent has more.

Probably the one killed by lightning
He got strike by lightning and survived he is a different breed.
Most people who get struck actually survive, just end up with after effects. Lightning has *a lot* of voltage so the amps, the actual “force” of the electricity, combined with the speed of the strike, usually leaves people needing medical attention instead of a casket.
Most people do.

Lighting either kills u instantly or wont cause any acute harm if u have survived it (unlike electrocution)
We have a teaching in medical college that a lightning attack pt ,if he WALKS to our ER , just observe him for 8 hours and discharge him as he wont have any ACUTE complications (Walking means no acute harm had taken place )(not so for electrocutions)

He's a good advice: Watch your local weather! If it says it's going to rain and chance of storms, do not do yard work! People need to check the weather on their tv and phones these days!
Sometimes bad weather will come out of nowhere. It can be sunny, then a minute later, bad storms. I've seen it happen.
I intentionally check the weather in the hopes of storms to swim during. Im I cracy?

back in the early 70's my cousin and his family went to the beach and lighting hit my cousin and close enough it knocked everyone 20 feet or closer to the ground. my cousin was hit behind the right ear and blew out the bottom of his left foot. they said if he had been wet he most likely would have died. but he was lucky he either hadn't got in the water yet or been out long enough he was already dry, and thank God this is alive today.
Had he been wet it is more likely been LESS affected by the lightning, not more... (wet skin would have made more of the lightning travels on the outside).

Shocking . Glad he recovered .
I had assumed the 30/30 rule was if the tree was 30 feet tall, move 30 feet away. I guess it would be more like the 30/60 rule though, move twice the height of the object away from it.
There is a reason that rule isn't talked about much. It isn't based on actual science by any stretch of the imagination.
@@dogmosatchmo In the sense of maintaining distance from tall objects, or in the sense of the exact distance? I would say there's plenty of science demonstrating the potential for arcing and conduction at short distances during a lightning strike, so any rule of thumb that says to get outside the general vicinity is a good one. In some sense twice the distance makes sense, as arcing is more likely to take place at less than a 45-degree angle from the top on down than it is beyond that length.
