  • So you've got your SciAps Z902 and you're looking to take your first readings. This video covers everything you need to know about taking your first reading including safety, logging into your analyzer, warming up your analyzer, a brief overview of the argon (if required), a discussion on sample check, a discussion about intensity calibration, and finally taking your first reading.
While the SciAps Z-902 is shown in this video, the same procedures apply for all SciAps Z-900 series instruments.

Can you show how large the arc strike is?

The laser that strikes the surface makes a small mark on the sample typically within machining roughness. It is not a big arc like a welder uses. The laser is only a few microns across.

If you are using a Z-Series handheld LIBS unit you likely need to perform drift correction. See this video: th-cam.com/video/7znPZ6Xu6Rg/w-d-xo.html
The second thing you can do is work on the cal factors for the instrument. This will come in a future video. For now, try the drift correction and see if that resolves your issue.
If you're still seeing variation, you may need to take multiple readings and average them.
