    I quite like the 'leave the infotainment and nav functions up to the user's phone' design. I mean, try as they might, car manufacturers are always going to suck in that aspect compared to smartphone manufacturers, and you cut costs. Plus, getting a better phone means you upgrade your car´s nav system as a bonus, and each family member that uses the car gets their own custom thingies.

    • @jwenting
      @jwenting 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah. The one thing that always bugged me about my old (2014) Up! was that the satnav system was buggy and wasn't easy to update (especially after Garmin discontinued support for it in 2017 or so).
      Was stuck with 2015 maps forever, plus it tended to forget it actually had a microphone and speakers every few weeks, requiring a hard reset to make the satnav and carkit work again.

    Great website Jonny. A man of many talents. Thanks for the e-up! review. Love the odd expletives. Yeah, you have to wait after you have opened the door with the clicker or hands-free on my e-golf to hear the servo motor zzzz-clunk to release the cable from the socket. I'm surprised they did the same for the caps. I had to re-jig mine on the e-golf to keep the retainer strap in place as it pulled out early on. No biggy. I'm waiting for either the ID-3 or the Buzz. My heart is pretty much set on the Buzz, as I plan to spend a fair bit of time in it touring when I start to retire out of full-time work. I aim to do some EV touring and see how many charges I can get for free as I travel throughout Europe.

    The recharging caps in the back are locked, which is why you could not open them. All you need to do is use the fob and press unlock button which unlocks the caps, for recharging. Much easier than trying to use a stick to pry them open.

    50% of the current orders for the UP are eUPs...means a loooong wait time...and huge success.
    Read that the entire 2020 Production is sold out and production is on hold at the moment anyway...even more wait Time.
    I think if you plan to buy a Golf you usually plan it as first Car...means ICE...if you plan a for a second Car you plan for an UP, which perfectly fits for this purpose and explains to me the order success of the eUP.

    • @alanhillyard1639
      @alanhillyard1639 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, the filler door opened so the car was obviously unlocked, so the disconnect here was just that the caps lock back on after about 45 seconds after the car is unlocked. Not the same as a petrol car at all, the flap is open when the car is open and you can open the filler cap when you please.

    I've been hoping for a TH-cam comparison review of the eGolf and the eUP. That you should do it Jonny, rather than some of the TH-cam clowns, is a bonus. Good review. I had a second hand e-up! until it was stolen in 2017. Last year I bought a brand new e-Golf. I have to say, that while the e-Golf is a pretty nice car, I always have preferred the e-up! That may sound strange but that's just me. Even when I first did test drives back in 2015, I found the e-Golf a bit heavy and cumbersome while the e-up! has always felt zippy and fun. I'm seriously considering switching back to the latest version of the e-up! One factual point: the e-up! has always had a CCS port and DC Rapid Charge capability.

    I did not expect the channel name to be so appropriate. But back on topic. I still believe the Golf GTE is the best value car. Sportive, 40 kms of full electric range and long range petrol capability. If you need to do short or long trips then that one wins by miles. In the short-medium to medium-long range this may be great. But it is skinny and as you said has very similar cheaper options. However, a new e-golf (why do they even bother) is coming around this summer and the ID3 will be finally here at the end of 2020.

    Flip out rear windows, are not only cheaper, they weigh less and the hollowed out doors give rear seat passengers, more elbow room. Same is in the Aygo/C1/108.

  • @alexdolling

    When you say the rear windows are pop out for cost saving, isn’t it actually the shape of the rear door means you can’t wind the window down without it having a massive fixed quarter light.

    Completely agree with you about the Lupo and Fox - the Seat version of the Lupo (forgotten the name!) was great value, the 3 cylinder diesel was so frugal - my Brother ran one for a few years. I like the Up, the 5-door is the best option anyway. I do think £19k is too much for an E-Up though, especially when you can get the funky BMW i3 120Ah new for under £30k if you shop around. Better range, lovely interior, LED lights, keyless start, and it will never rust or look boring - but then I'm biased, I love my i3.
