‘Defeat in Ukraine could be the end of Putin’ - expert explains

  • Russia's Vladimir Putin is obsessed with his legacy. He has compared himself to Peter the Great, the tsar who founded St Petersburg and created the modern Russian empire.
That was Putin’s plan but with Ukrainian forces now pushing back and Russian men fleeing the country, it’s not going the way he had hoped.
So is he losing his hold on power?
We speak to Angela Stent, an author, professor and an expert in all things Russia and Putin. She explains that while Putin’s legacy is damaged and his hold on power is slightly weaker - it’s too early to say if this is the beginning of the end for the Russian leader.

You’re absolutely correct. This invasion has been a complete disaster for putler. In 50-100 years, history will look back on this as one of the great military/political blunders of the 21st century. Even if Russia somehow wins this, they’ll still have an army which has been mauled, with much of their materiel goods destroyed. Add to that the sanctions, which would only get stronger in the event of a Russian victory & it becomes clear that the Russians will be paying for putler’s sins for the next 30 or 40 years, possibly much longer.

The idea that "Russia is destined to have authoritarian rulers" is ridiculous. Democracy is only 100 yrs old in most western countries, which had long-ruling authoritarian rulers or limited oligarchies up until that point. Even if you don't consider women's right to vote, (which only appeared in France in 1945 for example) universal male suffrage only appeared in most western countries about 100 yrs ago.
