The first theme must have been inspired by Schubert's Arpeggione Sonata only for this concerto to inspire Grieg's first Piano Concerto which went on to influence Rachmaninoff when making his first Piano Concerto. What a magnificent chain of influence and what a gorgeous piano concerto Schumann has composed!
The Arpeggione, while a great work, likely could not have influenced this work since (even though it was written 20 years prior) it was not published until much after Schubert’s death, 30 or so years after this Concerto was written. I see the comparison, however. What a coincidence.
@@masantonio8790 Schumann visited Ferdinand Schubert in Vienna in 1839 and had access to a lot of unpublished music pieces. So its possible he saw the Arpeggione sonata
It is one of Schumann's masterworks and the closing section always gives me goosebumps. Also, the Mendelssohn 1st, the two Chopin and the two Brahms are the greatest of the Romantic piano concerto repertoire.🙂🙂
I love that little contrapuntal episode at 23:05. Passages like that are not very common in Schumann's music (another that comes to mind is in the finale of his fourth symphony), but boy are they beautiful!
Thanks for this awsome upload. It is a nice memory to Radu Lupu, after he has passed away in April this year. This is my favourite piano concerto of all times and propably one of the best works of Schumann. Please continue uploading such awesome recordings. By the way, I am always impressed by the quality of your scores, they are wonderful.
Excellent performance with so many colors! There are a great number of great interpretations in the piece. Personally, I like the middle section of the second movement the best (starting from 16:00), where the cello introduces a new melody with stunning piano Arppegio as the accompaniment. This section is magical since it adds some tender sentiments compared to the previously brisk F major section, like a sincere romantic confession. This sudden alteration of the style really brings the piece alive. Bravo to the composer Robert Schumann, the pianist Radu Lupu, and all performers as well as the conductor André Previn from London Symphony Orchestra!
