    Learn to do your own bike maintenance would be my tip. I didn't realise how attritional it can be on bike parts if you're racking up the miles. Constant tinkering and tuning up, upgrading components and selling on the old stuff. It's all part of the hobby that I enjoy as much as riding! I must have saved myself £100s of pounds on labour costs over the years.

      I agree completely. Repairs and maintenance help me "feel" the bike better. Plus I save a ton of $$. I still support my LBS with safety checks and overhauls before long events

      @stevedouglas3975 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Absolutely. I enjoy doing it so I find it easy but these are bicycles not F1 cars and I'm amazed at how many people can't index their own gears, or change a chain etc.

    Nothing like bicycling downhill coasting, sunshine, scenery spectacular, plus beloved animals beside the road, yeah, it is paradise. Good camaraderie too; can't have happiness without the love factor in one's heart and soul. Very connected to path and nature bears much fruit. 🌹

    Nature, the quiet, time to clear your mind, and getting somewhere (or nowhere) under your own power. Nothing is better than riding. Keeping the weight off is just a pleasant side-effect. Live to ride, and ride to live.

      @@KatieKookaburra I haven't really even looked for anyone to ride with yet. I've been riding a hardtail on mostly flat road for 4 seasons now, so anything with an upward grade is a bit of a challenge. I'll be getting a carbon gravel bike hopefully in a week or are so. So this year we work on climbing. Then I'll see about actually riding with others. 😀
      P.S. I was just at the bike shop getting measurements for the dropper post and handlebars. They are finishing putting the Checkpoint together even as I type this. 😁😁😁😁😁😁😁

    I think pain on the bike is the biggest factor in people quitting cycling. Ow, that hurt. Bin the bike, or let it sit so long on the porch the chain grows hair. I think this is probably the best of your tips, Katie. I hope lots of beginner cyclists watch this and take especially that tip to heart. Well said (or is "too right" more appropriate? Can I use British expressions since the ancestry results came back, and I'm 66% British by dna?😄}

    Whilst watching this video, I was thinking about how much you love climbing, and how upbeat you are. I saw your Everesting video pop up in the sidebar, and thought "let's see how upbeat she is at the end of the Everesting, I bet she's not!" So I pulled up that video (I'd seen it before) and watched it again. And Dang if you weren't chipper all the way through, although a tad bit disappointed that it started to rain for the last two laps. At the end, you were still proclaiming your love for the route and the experience in general. You are a special woman, Katie! Glad I found your channel and endless fountain of youth! Cheers!

    Hi Katie, again your enthusiasm and pure enjoyment of being on the bike is infectious. My tip if relevant for some is not to ride in high humidity and when it’s hot, like 30deg C +. Too easy to dehydrate unless you’ve got a support vehicle following you with lots of bidons pr towing a water tank behind you🙂
    I always enjoy your videos, keep them coming.

    ah Hebden Bridge I thought you were fairly local to me I know a yorkshire lass when i hear one! Im near York now so hills are really not my thing 😆 I did the White Rose sportive last year in the dales which was my biggest challenge to date (and involved a lot of pushing 🤣) only been cycling a couple of years. My #1 tip which nobody ever tells you is no undies under your cycling gear. I learnt the hard way 😅 Also agree on nutrition eat before you get hungry, I personally use high5 gels & powder in my drink i've kinda worked out when i need to take a gel and I always feel the benefit when they kick in - but find what works for you.

    Hi, Great video many thanks. One point I would make as a cyclist, motorcyclist and car driver is as follows. Last Sunday I travelled up to Lincolnshire with my vintage BSA trials bike on a trailer for a trials event at Osmby Quarry and en route came across many cyclists solo and in groups (runners as well). I am acutely aware of cyclists and motorcyclists and always on the look out for them - what would really help is the use of high vis clothing and lights during the day time. Just a thought for those cycling around the uk roads. Good luck with your ongoing adventures!

      Yes - far too may people wearing mostly black. There is nearly always a lot of black in the background eg shade under trees. I wear a dayglo yellow jersey. If someone knocks me off while I'm wearing that I expect them to be prosecuted for driving with defective eyesight (or some kind of malicious intent).

    How much difference do you think losing weight makes to being a stronger cyclist? I’m trying to lose about 20kg and I’m really hoping it’ll make a huge difference to my endurance & my climbing! What you said about bonking made me laugh as last weekend I went through the same. Told my partner I couldn’t chew 😂 I was just so done in. 2 gels got me going again! Keep up the great work with the videos KK. I find them pretty inspiring 😊

    • @tonysegadelli9421
      @tonysegadelli9421 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      A few years ago I lost 25kg in 9 months solely through cycling. It made a huge difference obviously on hills but even on the flat.
      I also got a lot fitter and stronger in the process so it wasn't just the loss of weight.
      Best of luck

    • @KatieKookaburra
      @KatieKookaburra  ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Hahahaha same!! I was like a toddler haha. Yeah losing weight definitely helps on climbs... but I was around 100kg when I started riding and LOVED the hills even then. I think the hills are what helped me lose the weight. But make sure you are eating enough on rides! Focus on adventures, not weight loss and it will happen :)

    • @greghart6310
      @greghart6310 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Don't worry too much about weight loss, as Katie says it will happen anyway. Eat well and healthily, don't have too many pastries or refined carbs, rather eat fruit and veggies to get your (much needed) carbs. Don't push yourself to ride hard without adequate nutrition and proper hydration (electrolytes) - bad things happen! Stay healthy and just ride - the kilos will melt away by themselves. I was 115kg at one (low) point, now within 2 or 3 kg of my youthful weight - not bad for a guy in his late fifties - and that after only 6 months of riding. Health first - weight loss as a free (ok, I lie, you have to work at riding!) bonus second.
