idk if this sounds weird but watching your videos is so incredibly calming and reassuring because im 19 and study political science and sociology and whenever i feel troubled about the path i’m taking i watch your videos and see how part of the same path has contributed in making you a really smart and sensible person that i kind of really look up to although i don’t really know you so thank you for that! 💌

You are so smart. This video makes me realize I have been merely reading books rather than eating them.

The transition from “fighting about bringing hush puppy” to you smiling into the camera in the car with hush puppy is gold.

Obsessed with paradise rot, I read it last year in one sitting and immediately started it over and read it a bit slower. I love the way you said that rot means growth- I felt that jo was beginning to thrive in the environment in a lot of ways, especially as the rot grew more and more around her. I’m so happy to have this review to reference for when I inevitably pick the book up again, so thank you!

LOVE hearing your thoughts on Vladimir. Honestly my fav part of the book was one the narrators favorite student tactfully tore her to shreds in their one on one meeting. And the ending was so cheap. I had fun while reading it but man it really could have been so much more.

love the fungus/rot metaphor as new growth, even a sort of metamorphosis through the food chain -- also suspect the intimacy between the characters is mirrored by the connective rooting out of rhizomes, adapting to surroundings, etc...

I mostly enjoyed Vladimir for what it is. Certainly it was quite witty at points. Like you, I was rather disappointed/even discomforted by the ending. Enjoyed your thoughts on it as a book on generational differences!

Oooh interesting thoughts on Vladimir as people are going wild for it. Imma read it soon and see which side of the fence I fall. I must read Paradise Rot, have had it on the shelves too long.

i totally agree i feel like that topic of younger women being so attracted to men in power would be SUCH an interesting theme to dive into, sucks that vladimir didn't meet those expectations!!

I totally agree that fun books aren't enough for me! Either the prose has to be proficient enough that I feel like I'm absorbing some kind of beauty OR the ideas have to be challenging. Loved your review of Vladimir and I feel like I'm going to not like it that much as well, but I still kinda want to read it haha

Paradise Rot is apparently based on her time in Melbourne. I’ve read it and a friend in Melbourne lives in a similar warehouse situation that literally was raining indoors recently

came back after finishing paradise rot and i loveeee your thoughts about it UGH just so good!! also i agree i don't think the bodily fluids were gratuitous, for me it felt like it was a theme of vulnerability, and I think your insight to Carral perhaps having sexual trauma in the past rings true to her behaviors in the book

    paradise rot book report 😉
Enjoyed it, because Hval's writing is brilliant but maybe bordering on too sparse (if possible). Although that may have been part of the desired effect. (Would have to read something else by then to know for sure-so might check out Girls Against God.) The use of the theme of rot is very good throughout, starting with the fictional grim northern town, and tying it to the main character's sexual awakening. Did not find it as gross as other-not sure what that says about me! 😂

Wow thank you for this video!! I *just* finished Vladimir this morning, and your words on it have validated me! I personally thought it was a slog, and am confused about all the buzz and hype. My most critical conclusion is that yes, the book does present and explore topical subjects, but it seems like we need to hold each other to a higher standard - especially cultural agents. There were moments of some real insight, and like you said, I'd find myself totally present and ready to delve into some nuance about consent/desire/etc, but then it would stop so short almost like the author was embarrassed to be earnest (like she described American academics at one point). I completely agree with what you said about the narrator, so unlikable and despite being privy to all those inner monologues, I don't feel like I really understood where she was coming from, or what she was trying to gain, other than clumsily trying to make up for apparent lost time (via her desire...which I also felt was so disappointing in the way it was explored). The characters felt hollow, and you're totally right that it seemed like it was trying to entertain. Ever since watching your video on how to be better at recommending books, I've learned I like to read for language and beautiful sentences. I just found it so so painful. And I even bought it new...because what a sexy cover, but dang what a disappointment! Ok ty for coming to my TedTalk 🥴
I do also want to say that I love that you loved the Jenny Hval!!!! She is maybe one of my favourite musicians, and I have been lapping up her most recent singles. Have you listened to her music? She just released a new album yesterday and is going on tour! I also just last night applied to a publication grant for a project inspired by her music, particularly the album The Practice of Love. I'm curious if the differences between these two books on desire are reflective of the way Europeans and North Americans move around such topics.
I'll stop writing now but it was so nice to see this pop up in my subscriptions!!!! Love your channel. If you're ever in Montreal, would love to talk books over orange wine in the parc!!! 🦋
