This game is set after Journey to the West, by the end of Journey to the West, Wukong and his companions have been granted Buddhahood, but in this game, Wukong gave up his Buddhahood and return to his home to have a peaceful life, but the Celestial Court(basically equivalent to Olympus or Asgard in Chinese Daoist mythology) got paranoid, so they sent the Celestial army to go mess with Wukong. FYI, Chinese mythology consists of two systems of pantheons, the Daoist and Buddhist system. The first boss in the game is Erlang Shen, I think he is the only warrior in the Celestial Court to be able to match Wukong in a duel. The axe he used to split the mountain is actually a reference of his origin story, where his mother was trapped in a mountain by the gods, and he used the same axe to split the mountain and save his mother.
Awesome to learn these things, personally im not familiar with Chinese mythology at all, especially compared to Greek, Norse and Egyptian. I bet there are a ton of references and cool characters people will recognize which must be super exciting to experience, kinda like fighting Thor and Odin in GoW, you just know those guys are badass.

Just one sun wukong is already a beast beyond comprehension imagine 84000 and if thats not crazy enough those clones can also create 84000 more clones and those can do the same. so he can basically create infinite version of himself. Infinite supreme omnipotent beings 💀

I’m playing the game and beating it and it’s definitely not a game Jett would like. It’s depressing but without action and there’s so much reading and listening to dialogue. Essentially a walking sim with environmental story telling. That being said I liked it enough to play it and beat it. But there’s no comparison to the tell tale or Detroit become human games.
To explain general story:. It follows a monk name Tang SanZang who goes on a Journey to the West (India) for the Sacred Buddha's Scriptures. Sun Wukung, who was born from a rock (space rock?) since the beginning of time by adsorbing the Heaven and Earth's Chi and Spirit. He founded a monkey kingdom and realised that he and his people could die of old age. He went on a journey to learn mystical arts (magic) and to become a deity and gain immortality. Long story short, he got into conflict with the heaven and made a mess due to his arrogance and untamed behaviour, no one could stop him until Buddha appeared and sealed him up for his crime for 500 years using a mountain + Seal. (5 Finger Mountain) The story begins when the monk's destiny is to find Wukung and set him free, however he must become the monk's disciple and follow him on a journey to the west by foot. During the journey, they have to overcome 81 difficulties of life and death, fighting evil demons and testing their faith and comradery
