I have to disagree. I started studying this piece on the piano when I was 15 and managed to learn it, however horribly, I had this bad boy memorized. I am always in awe of pianists who can actually play the dang thing WELL, but this guys was not one of my favorites. I heard a few clunkers (which is by far better than I could do though!) and wasn't quite feeling the character of his interpretation. To each his own, I guess.
this definitely is the best version of this piece. The tempo, pedal control, the emotion on his face is nearly perfect. I think he is like he is enjoying this piece not playing anymore. You can see it on his face on 1:21- 4:55 - 9:04. I really like his emotion on this piece than anyone else. Maksim Mrvica is such a genius !!!

Hello, just a quick thought... I'm sorry to break it to you but Franz Liszt was not a Magyar... Please you people do some thorough research... Yes, Franz Liszt was Ungarian citizen but Slovak(Slovien) national... His maternal languge was NOT magyar, he didn't even speak magyar language his whole life... ❤

Beautiful interpretation of what is arguably the most difficult piece ever written for piano. He not only knows how to play the song, but also understands its essence, and he interprets it both appropriately and beautifully. The mellow moments are quiet, tender, and unhurried, while the big moments are bold, dynamic, and unstoppable. I know he's borderline theatrical, but I think that his dramatic stage presence ties in successfully to his actual performance, probably because he has such a keen understanding of the music he's playing. This is probably my favorite, live rendition of this piece. Simply superb.
A difficult piece, no doubt, but not the hardest piece ever written; nor even the hardest Hungarian Rhapsody (No.6 might go down that route); the hardest piece probably belongs within Sorabjii's Opus Clavicembalisticum
His version of this piece is very light, sweet, and gentle, more like a Chopin piece. Although his fortes are spot on.A brilliant performer, as is Valentina Lisitsa, but her version seems much more aggressive and cold. I think I prefer Maksim's. It would be wonderful to have heard Liszt play it himself, for his original interpretation.
+Leemarie468 Thank you so much, as a music lover and a Croatian for praising our pianist :) we share same thoughts. Music isn't all in technique. I love his interpretation the most.
maksim's interpretation is far from technical perfection and that is why i like it. the variation carries the passion i like in this piece. i think it has its' own brilliance. it has wabi sabi. i have listened to this so many times and i lose myself in it every time.
This has been my absolute favorite version of this piece for almost 15 years now. Everyone else seems to rush it and it takes away the emotion. Where has the time gone??
The Liszt Hungarian Rhapsody is considered one of the most difficult piano titles.... This guy,....just close your eyes and listen the the way he plays it, you can tell he adores this title. This is likely the most well played Hungarian Rhapsody you can ever hear!
I am utterly appalled at the audience!!!! I could not imagine sitting thru such a great performance, composed by the greatest composer ever, Liszt, played by such a notable artist as Maksim , on maybe the finest instrument ever made , a Fazioli grand , and not rising to my feet for a rounding ovation,,,,,,, Shame shame shame. I rose and applauded at home. !!!!
He interprets this piece romantically and I love it very much. It sounds so intriguing and colourful. I have been listening to his playing of this piece countless times for many years. It melts my heart in the section of 3:30...
everyone has their own interpretation about this masterpiece. for me this masterpiece represent the human's feelings and emotion in this life... Anger, Sad, Beauty, Doubt, Hope, Funny, Playfull, Happiness ETC and Maksim played it very well.. the best version I've ever heard. also his emotion when he play this... perfect!!!
I first heard this on a player piano at the House on the Rock in Wisconsin & fell in love with it. I never believed it was humanly possible to play this piece. Unless you were Liszt. Meeting this man has just become number one on my bucket list.
Without a doubt the best. It’s performed exactly the way it should be, not too ‘impressive ‘ in a way that puts focus on the fact that it’s performed live and they’re trying to impress the audience, but exactly how it should be in an artistic manner. In a theatrical manner, dramatic way, an almost cartoon like performance . Exactly how you would imagine it in your fantasy but not in reality.
