  • Joe Langford has been involved with the annual Chetwynd International Chainsaw Carving Championship for 20 years.
The event brings the community as well as visitors together to watch how some of the most beautiful wood sculptures in the world get created.
See the unique carvings placed around the small, welcoming town in British Columbia after the event.

Chetwynd is named after The Honourable "William Ralph Talbot Chetwynd" (Juyl 28, 1890-April 3, 1957). He was Director of the PGE Railway (now CN Rail), a BC Social Credit Party member, and a politician for British Columbia Legislative Assembly for Cariboo (1952-1957). The railway was built north to Chetwynd by 1957-58. I lived there as teenager in the 1960s & early 70s. Of course, it was smaller then. As a student, I worked at the saw mill a couple of times and off-and-on at most other places in town, especially a Texaco gas station--now long gone. I actually lived upstairs in the town's museum building when it was located down on the highway (South Access Road). I believe it was the town's first Post Office and grocery store (in the 1950s) before I got there. The building was moved up the hill and made into the museum at sometime later, long after I was gone. If I was still there, I would be a pioneer. Now a Big City boy in Vancouver. The locals have true grit---much to be admired.---Chuck Gardiner
