It always fascinates me when a coot deliberately turns its heads sideways when feeding from your hand. I'm never quite sure whether this is just so they can eat more or intentionally to protect your hand as their pointed bill is very pointed as their errant victims know all too well! They certainly are very curious birds.

I’m not sure but I was very surprised at how gentle they are. The adult pairs can be very tender with each other, totally different relationships than ducks have. I’ve seen the male defend the nest, swim over to nest, bow their head in front of partner who will then very gently preen their feathers. It is a side of them I hope to show more of as most people just see the crazier side. The ones that nest near where I sit had chicks last year, nest was predated, they almost instantly built another nest in different spot and had another batch. They are very determined!

Oh they definitely recognise you. Been followed from a pair before! Lol. Had one hand feed a few times, but sometimes they are still a little cautious

It is probably the same one, think he/she is pretty young. You will see how this one won’t be able to enter water when the others start nesting. If you fill a coffee jar lid with water and grass this one will be grateful, especially when it gets warmer again. They are surprisingly calm when they get used to you.

@@SwanFamilyandFriends Maybe it is the same one. I remember back when we first started coming last year, a mum and chick coot followed us around the pond and we made sure they were fed. This might be the chick!
And thank you for the tip! Can't wait till it starts getting lighter again and can get down more to help. Miss being able to go after work!

@@swansandstuff I think the one in this video is 2 years old, there was only 1 Coot that survived last year so your stalker was maybe that one. Last time I saw that one it had been moved to bottom pond, think it has maybe left now as no room in Coot land, there are territories right around island and they must be about as close together as they can possibly be without them fighting. I stopped one getting drowned last year, it is a tough life they have. The nesting Coots have a zero tolerance policy for anything remotely close to their nest. They are pretty successful usually but can’t deal with the Gulls.

You should get fisherman waders so you can go in the pond with your friends.❤

Now there’s an idea! I fear my friendship with them may disappear if I don’t have food tho.

Well maybe when you are in you could make sure you have food and hears a tip stay away for the bird then it should be ok.❤
