As a man who just built my off grid home in San Felipe, Baja, you continue to be an inspiration. I'm learning the ropes of solar management, water management and am about to launch into gardening. Being 100% off grid and debt free is a feeling very few people will ever know. I know I don't have to tell you, but it's amazing. Thanks for your great channel. Adorable dogs btw.... 🙂

I have not traveled to Mexico in over ten years as we are told its become to dangerous, after watching your channel I suspect it's much safer than the media tells us. I miss the slower pace of life and the friendly people there and the beautiful beaches.

I can honestly say that I feel as safe here as I did in Canada, and in some ways, I feel even safer! Thank you for allowing me to shift your perspective a little bit. The slower pace of life, friendly people & beautiful beaches are definitely all here & all as beautiful as ever.

Another thing we did for our rooftop tinaco was build an enclosure around/above it, to protect it from high winds (after we had a half full tinaco blown off the roof) and from UV rays which, as you know, are brutal for plastic.

We have both a 10,000 L cistern (completely underground) and a 55,000 L cistern (partially underground) made of solid volcanic rock, as we live in an earthquake-prone zone south of Mexico City, and cinder block cisterns are more likely to develop small cracks which will then leak. We do clean the cisterns regularly, so we know there are no rotting iguanas in them! 😅 The metal cover is big enough for a person to go down into the cistern, and clean out any buildup of mud and debris (passing buckets to someone up top). We also collect the rainwater from our rooftops and upper floor terraces into our large cistern. The first rains of the season go into a barrel (as they will have the build up of dust from the dry season), then it switches to going into the cistern. But before going into the cistern, it’s filtered through a small tinaco with “tezontle” (another kind of small volcanic rock abundant in our region). Then it goes through another in-line washable filter, and finally into the cistern. We’re going to build one more cistern, because our goal is to have the rainwater be enough to get us through the dry season. Currently we still have to buy a few “pipas de agua” (water truck), although we only pay the equivalent of US$45/10,000 L, compared to your $75! We also reuse our grey water for watering.

How dare you get your eggs and laundry done in town? For shame!!! This type of behavior runs a fowl of the P.O.G.R.C. (Pretentious Off Grid Regulatory Committee) which is strictly enforced by the P.H.A. (Puritan Homestead Alliance) 😄 All jokes aside, you're a beautiful soul and I truly enjoy the content that you're providing. Even though I have zero interest in moving to Baja, just watching your journey is inspiring. You're living free according to your own dreams and aspirations... Which I find to be admirable in every sense of the word. Keep spreading the knowledge and good vibes! ☀️

Thanks for the laughs Zach, absolutely awesome. Yes I confess, I'm guilty! An absolute slacker of a homesteader. The PHA would most definitely judge me & deem me guilty. 😆 Thank you for your kind words & good vibes too, cheers!

I totally enjoyed your video and very informative
Since you have hot and humid summers, you may want to check into solar powered systems that absorb water from air and give you purified water.

That's funny, I had to go out and look in our underground tinaca after watching this. There is a steel trap door on top that I could climb in or out of, periodically I lean over and look down in there with a headlamp. It's got some leaf debris and dirt in there but I don't see any mold or algae. I believe the blue sealant paint in there is some kind of anti microbial. I know that a few years ago I was trying to fish a scorpion out from under the trap door without getting stung and it fell into a full tank and crawled on the bottom until it drowned, oh well! We don't drink the water but I'm pretty sure we could, it's good well water and far superior to the city water here which is brackish, awful to bathe with and ruins your plumbing fixtures. We rinse with it when brushing our teeth and no problema. It's 12,000 liters, when I get it filled I usually throw a cup or two of Cloralex bleach into it.
