    As a recent convert to e-bikes - I was gifted one for my 60th birthday - I find 15 mph is about the speed I want to be traveling most of the time. That said, on roads where I'm competing with vehicle traffic, I'm glad I can bump it up to 20 mph. Even that can feel slow on some of the roads around here, but it certainly feels safer than 10 or 15.
    The biggest thing for me was just the ability to cycle again. My knees are finished... my hips and ankles aren't much better, so cycling was over for me and had been for several years. I'm glad that I'm back on a bike again and getting at least some aerobic exercise.

    Yes, we should have faster e-bikes. 20mph would significantly increase the useful radius of travel and most folk can do that speed without electric assist when going downhill anyway. The highest downhill speed I have clocked on a bicycle was 28, that was maybe pushing it a bit. If I can comfortably coast downhill at 20 I don't see any reason why there should be a restriction on powering up a hill at the same speed.

      You can go as fast as you like on an E-Bike, you just have to do the pedalling yourself if you want to go faster than 15mph - I'm fine with that. The problem with allowing faster speeds on electric assist is that there are inconsiderate users out there who would put pedestrians at risk on mixed use paths when using that extra speed. So the maximum permitted speed with assist is a balance, and I think the current limit is about right.

    That bike illustrates the one thing I don't like about most bikes. You have to lean forward on your arms, which gets tiring, and puts pressure on your lower back. It also restricts your visual area, . If they would make more of them semi-recumbent, with the pedals pushed forward and the handlebars raised a little, the rider could sit completely upright, limiting pressure on the spine and arms.

    Torque sensor is kind of standard for pedal assist.
    Integrated lights are great until they break. I've got a fancy one integrated into the handlebar which didn't last long. No gears is a bad idea, it's not great for longevity of components if you go high torque too much.
    I wonder if there are simple three speed hub gears that are compatible with the belt drive, unless the motor is in the rear hub.

    • @zygmuntthecacaokakistocrat6589
      @zygmuntthecacaokakistocrat6589 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No, it isn't 'standard': it is more common to have a Hall Effect sensor on the crank to measure rotation speed. The motor is in the rear hub.

      @nickwinn7812 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Torque sensors are kind of standard on mid drives, not hub motors (pedal assist or otherwise). A single speed gives you less torque at the rear wheel, not more (unless your lowest ratio is the same as this single one and all of the rest are higher). Hub gears generally cannot take the torque from a mid drive motor plus rider.

    You mention the Nm of torque. It's important to note that with hub-motor e-bikes it's not an especially useful stat. Unlike mid-drive e-bikes where torque is measured at the crank, it's calculated at the ground with a hub-motor bike. So it's hardly an apples-to-apples comparison, even from one hub-motor bike to the next (especially when the wheel sizes aren't the same).

    the 15 mph is meant for e-bikes to blend in with normal bikes, if they go faster the risk of traffic accidents with other bikers increases, especially on bike paths. In the Netherlands, we can get e-bikes that go faster (up to 25 mph/40 kph) but then they can't make use of bike paths, they have to wear a helmet, they need a license plate and insurance and the rider needs a moped drivers licence. In short they have to follow all rules and regulations of a moped because they go as fast as a moped.

      We do - it's called an e-moped and there are plenty you can buy. But you can't share the cycle infrastructure, and need tax, insurance and a crash-hat.
      There has to be a line drawn between 'cycle' and 'moped/motorbike' somewhere. 15 miles an hour is about right, when almost all cycle traffic does 10-12 mph. You _can_ go faster, but you'll have to be fit and competent.
      Perhaps there is room for letting some mopeds into the wider/faster segregated cycle infrastructure, as they do in the Netherlands, but there is so little that is both wide and segregated in the UK there really aren;t that many places that are suitable for moped-mixing.

    Beautiful bike, but this review nails the drawbacks. I was just out on my U.S. class 3 ebike with a top speed of 28 mph, riding in traffic on a hilly and winding city through-road with one lane in each direction and no bike lanes. I easily kept up with vehicle traffic up and down hills, slowing down for traffic or lights, and turning quickly at the same pace as cars. Not everyone wants to ride like this, but it makes the case for a class 3 ebike with a 28 mph top speed, even if it weighs in at 64 lbs. and costs twice as much. But maybe I need two types of ebikes. Btw, very poor technical description of the CGO600 Pro is on their website. There are other ebike options that are very close competitors and a little less expensive.

    2:38 You could make it simpler by getting rid of that ridiculous, heavy (2-3 x the weight of a fixed stem) and creak-prone (something's creaking from 5:20 onwards and I'll bet it's the stem) adjustable stem (which are a pain in the date to adjust, anyway), and fitting the correctly-sized conventional one for the main rider when the bike is purchased. How many times have I had to diagnose, then pull these apart, grease them, and put them back together (repeatedly on the same bike)? Many times.

      I realise it might be heavier, I find it hard to believe it's more of an issue than whether or not I'm carrying my power bank, or how fat I am though. If you could halve the weight of the bike for the same spec, cool, but unless we're talking multiple kilos I don't think this matters for rational, normal people who use bikes normally.

Lights that are easily bolted on but not integrated.. no need for dynamo as LED lasts for ages before recharge.. Proper quality bell, a choice of 2 saddles types designed for real comfort ( one for ladies and one for guys)... Bolts for panniers if required - as a minimum a rear panier.. handle bars with careful thought to form and comfortable grips. Frame design for comfort but not too much 'sit up and beg'..
    No electricity, no heavy batteries or motors are needed..

    Looking at the e-bikes I see around this city, they go a good sight faster than 15.5 mph. They are travelling faster than the 20 mph speed limit in some cases. Years ago, I used to cycle at 30 mph on open roads without too much effort, so I can understand the safety of being able to keep up with town traffic. 30 kph / 19 mph would be a much more sensible top speed, so long as the speeds are policed properly. Allowing for 'speedo error', that would limit e-bikes to a reasonably safe genuine 20 mph.

    An e-bike that can't cope with hills sounds pretty pointless. I think some people might ride it around a car park and be impressed by the pick up, but it has a claimed range of 100km. If you are riding on the flat, a regular hybrid bike would be much lighter and just as easy once you get moving. Before buying a bike like this I would like to compare it to a modern hybrid bike over your regular commute. People whose last bike was an old clunker will feel like superman on a lighter, more efficient modern bike, and having gears helps you deal with hills. I appreciate that e-bikes are the solution for some people but this particular one seems to be electric just for the sake of it, Electric cars, cargo bikes and bikes that can practically be used for commuting are removing fossil fuel-burning vehicles from the road. This one, might get people cycling again, but I think a lot of them would be better off with either an acoustic bike or an e-bike that can offer more assistance on the hills.

  • @mikebikekite1

    I would still want hub gears, even 3 speed would be fine, for this price. I also believe that getting assistance up to 20mph should be standard. Any slower and you're an obstruction and have to put up with questionable overtakes.

    Belts are less efficient, than chains. Also, gears are very important. Having a torque sensor makes sense, but what you really should have, is an angle sensor! One that can tell if you're going up a hill, and give you enough assist so that it's as if it wasn't a hill, and not a single bit more (maybe less, if it's already at top capacity, but never more) ...and not allow you to get any assist, aside from that. Most people can't/won't maintain a speed above that, on a regular bike. And e-bikes shouldn't be able to go above the (non-rare) speeds of a bike.
