Recycling Truck in NYC: Heil DuraPack 4060

  • I had always liked watching the old G&H split rear loaders at work back in Naples. Two hoppers, two packers for twice the fun and clean recycling seemed like a fun route. The sorting out of 18 gallon bins not so much. With the smaller hopper sizes carted routes aren't ideal either, at least not without a foot of hopper extention and MSL style tippers. The transparent bag system really is the best of everything. Quick, clean, easy to reject contaminated setouts, and no wasted movement replacing empty cans/bins. Would work just as well outside of a dense urban area like this too.
    The DuraPack 4060 is a neat design catered to DSNY specs. It borrows the Formula 4000 packer but with a more conventional hinging of the sweep plate. Manual control levers for each hopper are mounted on their outer sides, accompanied by four buttons for each quarter of the packing cycle on the opposite side hopper (Blade Up, Slide Out; Blade Down, Slide In) You can see how it works at the 4:20 mark. What has me stumped is they kept a container bump bar on the narrow hopper side, no idea why. Maybe it serves a structural purpose?
    Big thanks to Scott / Trashman242 as it was his idea to head to Brooklyn to find both a split rear loader and whatever was collecting in the organics pilot program. We found ourselves in Greenpoint surrounded by hipsters and as a pleasant suprise plenty of my fellow Polaks. I'm sure I annoyed the hell out of the crew following for so long but the video came out nice, their patience is much appreciated. Filmed June 23rd, 2015.

    The NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) New York’s Strongest always does an unbelievable job. No questions asked. I love it. Nicely Done! Don’t Litter and keep New York City clean. 💯💪👍😊

    Great video! I sure wish people recycled like this everywhere where you had to keep containers and paper separated from each other. I think that it ensures better quality recyclable product for companies.

    Good to see you back! I honestly got kind of worried during your 10 month absence. Mostly because I know the Tampa Bay Area got ripped apart after Irma. Good to know you're alright! This is an awesome video. I actually spent some time in NYC over the summer and got a few minutes of video and a ton of really nice pictures. It's amazing how DSNY manages to pull off first class service when they have this much ground to cover. If this is just a normal every day recycling route, imagine something like post Christmas. That would be insane

    Got a little look at this stuff in Scott's video a while back, glad to watch a longer duration of these 4060s in action. Any split rear loader is a treat, but there's something about these DSNY recycle trucks that are especially fun to watch. Only noticed now these Macks have two steering wheels, low entry on both sides for a reason - either driver can jump in and take control from either side, smart idea. Is there meant to be any significance between the blue and white bags, like one for papers and another for commingle, or whatever goes in whatever? Guess you can hear and see what's inside them so not a major issue. Oh how mesmerising it is watching those dual packers in action, working totally out of sync independently, bigger packer and mini packer. I found that high pitched overpressure sound rather annoying at different times during the video, kept wishing they would flick the pack lever back into neutral position :S Seeing these Heils have duplicated hydraulics and the packers seem to work at consistent speeds together or individually, do you think these would have a higher capacity pump? Cool to see them do that larger set-out at 5:10, reversing up, blocking the street, tossing and packing away, only thing missing was some mean engine throttle, would've topped it off! Any idea what he said at 1:31 and twice after? Clearly a signal for the driver to move on... "HOT DAY"??? lol Always enjoy reading your description at the beginning of a video, never fails to provide some insight and critique on a given waste collection system =] Thank you for sharing another fine video, was a pleasure to watch! Got yourself a well earned like and favourite... guess a decent comment too ;)

    You would think that the container side would be the hopper covered in dust and grime, and the paper side relatively clean. Is there any other application that might have dirtied up that side?

    • @kennymantone1870
      @kennymantone1870 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      they might switch back and forth depending on the route…so if a specific route has heavier paper it goes in the bigger hopper etc

    Pretty cool how they do that. I just like the idea of running split trucks. Do you know how they charge for dumping split trucks? Is it the weight of the truck load divided by 2? Either way, been wanting to see this your old DSNY video. Keep up the good work!
    P.S Hows NoLa?

    • @georgewuzheer
      @georgewuzheer  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To get both weights on a split truck you just weigh it an extra time. Weigh the full truck, dump one side, weigh again, dump the other side, weigh the truck empty.
      p.s. it's great :)

    liked the video, im surprised that a city as big as NYC is still using manual collection, i get that fully automated is unrealistic with such crowded streets but you would think they would at least switch to semi-automated. I also assumed that I was watching cardboard and paper products going into the right larger compartment and everything else going into the left, why is that? why not go single stream? Anyways great video and keep up the good work!

      I have said the same thing. tippers and carts at least. nyc has a HUGE rodent issue. lack of trash carts contributes greatly to this. hell, I think it may be more rats in nyc than people.

    • @laurin4339
      @laurin4339 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      1) There is little room in NYC for trash cans.
      2) Yes paper in the right, bottles and plastics in the left. Having dual stream recycling improves the quality of the recycling cause the paper isn‘t mixed with the liquids and glass shards.

    So manhattan doesnt bother with split bodies i assume? The piles looked like some stops over there had paper and cans on different days. Plus when you get into the real big piles like the one near the end, the split packers seem to have issues keeping up.

      Too much recycling in manhattan. We use 1 rear loader for paper. And a separate rear loader for metal/glass

    Hi, thanks for posting this! Do you have a contact email or any other contact method? I’m running a research project on the best methods to reduce contamination in the recycling stream and I’d love to get some hopper footage from a very specific vantage point, ideally even in my area if possible (Colorado). I’m curious if you know anyone or any drivers/operators/garbage aficionados I could talk to, thanks!

    • @Janotes

      The best way to reduce contamination in the recycling stream is through motivated,
      Educated, informed residents.
      When I see sneakers placed in the bin labeled for Metal, Glass, Plastic
      Recyclables I wonder what component this person thought
      Was recyclable. Particularly when
      My Municipality goes through great lengths to inform residents of proper recycling procedures.
