If I ever saw an MTU size changed from the default setting down to a lower MTU size, I'm not going to simply raise the size up to be the default 1500 in order to get the OSPF adjacency up. You could be breaking something else, like VPN or something else that required that MTU size to be lowered. You have to understand why the MTU was manually changed to begin with or you could be making things a lot worse.
