When it comes to the impact it causes on hairloss condition, Dr John Watts refers to a scientific study involving smokers and non-smokers that studied the link between the two.
“The study found that smoking slows down hair growth and gradually induces baldness,” he says, while linking smoking habit to premature ageing and lustreless skin besides hairloss.
While the use of cosmetic procedures and antioxidants can reverse the lustreless skin back to its former glory, no such technique exists that can naturally reverse the hairloss condition.
Four different ways smoking can damage the hair
In this video, Dr John Watts lists out four different ways smoking can damage our hair with scientific reasoning.
Blocks Microcirculation:
Smoking induces a condition where microvessels (arterioles, capillaries, and venules) that carries blood gets narrower and stiff. Some of these smallest vessels that form the microvasculature network also supplies blood to the dermal papilla that forms the centre of hair generation.
“However, blood flow to the hair gets affected due to smoking. With the result that it leads to hair loss as nutrients and oxygen supply to the hair are hit,” says Dr John Watts in the video.
Follicular Inflammation and Fibrosis:
Sustained smoking habit over a period of time is known to induce an inflammatory condition known as follicular fibrosis that results in hair fall and affects hair growth, informs Dr John Watts in the educational video. This is the second way in which smoking leads to hairloss condition.
Hair Growth DNA disruption:
Smoking may gradually lead to hair shedding due to what is known as proteases and anti-protease inhibitor activity. In his video, Dr John Watts explains that due to their activity, the DNA foundation that is attributed for hair growth is disrupted leading to slowing down of hair growth, eventually leading to baldness.
Excess oil production on Scalp:
The fourth and last way in which smoking habit is linked to hairloss is through excess oil production on the scalp that is induced by the nicotine present in tobacco.
“The nicotine in tobacco releases dopamine, which eventually triggers excess oil production on the scalp. This extra oil on the scalp hinders hair growth,” explains Dr John Watts.
