  • It's Adam Koralik here and today we're traveling to Saipan in the CNMI. A US territory near Guam in the South Pacific. The entire history of this place is basically, remember World War II? Interesting part of America.

    My grandad was a WW2 USMC veteran and fought in the Battle of Saipan. He was badly wounded there actually. But it makes me happy and I think it would make him happy to see that the island has become a beautiful part of the US out there in the Pacific. More mainland US residents should be aware and realize that these great sights are part of their country. Thanks for the video man!

      Many great warriors fought there.Only witnessed this aftermath of a horrible battle. Got to meet some that took part. Saw remnants from my fellow Americans that never made it home. Never took part of anty war, but got to witness things. Took the first 747 flight off Saipan with live mortars in my carry on! My Fire Chief Dad called the bomb squad years later,

    Great video... but just a bit of correction on the history. The Germans did have a presence in Saipan. They laid out most of the main town of Garapan, built docks, built an administration and school and fostered industry. They also used Saipan as a prison colony for prisoners from some of its other Pacific island holdings. The Germans were fairly active throughout Micronesia and parts of Polynesia, with industries of copra and whaling. Following WWI, the League of Nations (UN Predecessor) granted the islands to Japan. Also, the CNMI does not control its immigration... Chinese (and others) are permitted to visit VISA-free due to an exception (called Parole in Place) granted by US Immigration. This does not allow foreigners to stay as long as they want. In fact, they are limited to 14 days. Just a last point of note... Pan Am used to be the major Pacific Islands carrier well before Northwest/Continental/United. Northwest and Continental both served the CNMI for many years. Thanks for featuring these beautiful islands!

    Yep, McDs there since '93. Bus stops w/ McDs are only on the ones they sponsored, free ad for whichever company sponsors the upkeep of a particular one.
    The quarter you saw is part of the National Park series. There's another one which first came out during the State series.
    Btw, since the decline of the Japanese tourists in the early 2000s, the Koreans have always outnumbered the Chinese. It's also worth mentioning that the Japanese and Koreans have a sizeable and meaningful local community as opposed to the Chinese who tend to stick to themselves.
    Thanks for an updated coverage of the CNMI 👍🏼

      Truth be told many Chamorros on Guam especially the war generation believe the Saipanese to be traitors for siding with their Japanese overlords as the island was controlled by them to enslave & eventually exterminate the Guamanian population, hence the political separation of the CNMI (Saipan/Rota/Tinian) & Guam. Guam can stand alone economically and has done so without Saipan but together they stand a better shot at statehood. Meanwhile the Americanization of both islands is relentless creating a generic American feel similar to having Walmarts in every state. The Marianas gives the the US a base for operations to evangelize their democratic ideals to Asia, Oceania-IndoPacific region. I’d posit that if America wants to broadcast itself as a true democracy it better make sure it puts on a good image to those it seeks to influence by keeping Guam & Saipan well funded otherwise the polished image will look tarnished to foreigners visiting its lovely shores. Nothing like busing in tourist from 1st world countries to backwater 3rd world US controlled islands right? 🤙 cockadoodadoo

      Saipan has had a "deserted" feeling since the 1990s when the Japanese economy crashed and Japanese tourists stopped coming to the island. They've never been able to fully recover after that. Also the US federal government took over immigration so they can't bring in as many foreign workers as they used to. Wealthy families in Saipan used to be able to bring in low-paid maids from third world countries for like $200 a month. Saipan is definitely past its heyday.

    As a Navy brat, I lived there when I was very young. My parents are gone now. I remember we lived in a quonset hut near the beach. My mom would swim me and my sis out to a permanent floating raft in ? a lagoon ?? Once I got some kind of ? spaghetti type creature out of the ocean stuck to my feet. It was very traumatic for me. Also, my dad would bury huge sea shells in the hot sand to kill off the animals so we could have the shells. They might've been conch shells? Anyway, have you seen any remnants of Naval quonset hut communities near a beach? Odds are they are probably long gone. If so, could you give me a name so I could look at the area via google maps? I watch your videos to see if something looks familiar. I think a japanese bunker on a very high ridge next to the ocean ? was familiar; my dad took us there. It seemed like it was a very open area (no trees) expanse. It was probably urban myth at the time but I remember my mom telling me there were japanese soldiers still up in the hills, they didn't know the war had ended and they would come down and steal laundry off clotheslines.

    My wish is to visit every US territory. I’ve visited the USVI so far and I’d love to go back. And I’d love to visit the others. A political dream is for each of our territories to join the union as states. Though I’m curious what the people of Guam and the CNMI think about that

    • @AdamEatsTheWorld
      @AdamEatsTheWorld  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In general Guam seems to be for it, I don't think CNMI could join as its own. If Guam and CNMI joined like Hawaii grouped together, it could work.

    • @stevenmoylan166
      @stevenmoylan166 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We see how well statehood worked for Hawaii when it was a US territory before they joined the Union in 1959. Hawaiian natives were marginalized and discarded. I doubt Chamorros want to share the same fate. Land is central
      to the argument and control
      over their own borders. Nobody wants to be overrun with Asians, Filipinos, haoles. When that happens the Chamorros and their culture will be decimated. The US strategy for Guam as it was for Hawaii is to divide and conquer. It worked w/ the Native Americans and the land the Federal govt wholesale stole from them.

    • @dylanshaffer2184
      @dylanshaffer2184 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stevenmoylan166 well once a place becomes a state of the union, they cannot secede. Hawaii made its choice, so did Alaska, and the other states before them. If a majority of the residents who vote want the territory to become a state in a binding referendum, it will most likely lead to the next star on the flag

    Guam is the most vital & strategic of all US territories period. It is the United States’ most valuable piece of real estate! Also, Guam is the airline hub due to the mega military complex. It has a natural deep sea harbor and most importantly the only island in the Marianas archipelago with natural potable water aka aquifer that can sustain a population over 4mil people. By owner you mean colonized. America is a colonial imperialist power and therefore owns Guam & Saipan for the moment. Will it in 100 years remains to be seen. They may sell it to the Chinese to pay off their debts…

    Regarding the suicides, I wouldn't be so sure that the Americans didn't do awful things to the Japanese there. Battle of Saipan: The battle was a major conflict between the United States and Japan, resulting in heavy casualties. The intense fighting and bombing caused widespread devastation on the island.
    Violence and Sexual Assault: During the battle, there were reports of violence, including incidents of sexual assault against the local population. Survivors' testimonies and historical accounts suggest that such acts occurred, causing significant trauma and suffering.
    Post-War Period: After the war, Saipan came under the control of the United States as part of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. As with other places that housed U.S. military bases, there have been reports of violence and sexual assault involving U.S. servicemen and local residents in the post-war period.

I was with 3 Chinese, we flew out of Guangzhou each time. Customs would not stamp my passport. Said I was US Citizen. I was talked into renting a Hummer each time. Went golfing on 3 courses as I recall. The weather was great and the Ocean was a Deep Blue. Dinner in Garapan most nights. Stayed in Hotel on the Beach outside of town towards the Cliffs. So if you like the night life stay in Garapan and if not stay outside of town.

    I worked on Guam for three and a half months back in 2006-07. While there I visited both Saipan and Tinian. I saw, and did what they've shown everyone here but, since I was there in 2006-07 I've returned twice on my own and spent another five weeks on both Saipan and Tinian. In watching your video's I feel you're spending too much time on food, yes food and things you have little understanding and/or knowledge of. And, you miss so many things that are way, way more interesting. Things on Guam like Asan and Agat beaches where US forces landed in 1944. You miss better eating places like the Hard Rock Cafe. Then, shopping wise, how 'bout the Micronesia Mall and the Tumon Bay shopping area. The underwater tunnel where you can walk thru a neat underwater tunnel watching fish and sealife in a natural setting. How about the better hotels like the Marrott and the Hilton. Two Lovers Point. Jeff's Pirate Cove on the east side of Guam. Scuba diving and snorkling, etc. Then on Saipan there's the Hyatt Saipan and the other better hotels. War sites you missed and the zoo. On Tinian you never went to the Dynasty Gambling Casino/hotel and shopping mall and you completely missed the cliffs there where the Japanese were jumping off the cliffs too. Chulu Beach where US forces landed and a US Navy Seabee Memorial for all the Seabees that rebuilt the whole island for us. Too much time on all these videos on food. On Guam you spent over half your time in KMart describing canned and packaged food. It's interesting yeah, for awhile, but by talking food you missed more of what's MORE interesting. Next time get off the food and the small stuff and spend more time on the things that are way more important...

      As for hotels, budget is a reality sir.
      Plus, this isn't my only Guam or even Saipan video. I've got tons of them. The best part of not doing everything is...getting to go back. Check out the later Saipan video (made about a year later) and see if that satiates your WWII sites coverage.

      I'm aware of US immigration policy. The territories out there get to write slightly different rules. Things such as ESTAs do not apply. Meaning, citizens of countries that normally need additional visas (China for example) can enter the territory without Uncle Sam signing off on it. While rare, many bad actors just stay. You don't have to take my word for it though, there's many stories out there about this.

    Global warming wreaks havok on Islands, for instance Micronesia has large portions of cities under water (all the Micronesians are fleeing to Hawaii cuz, like you said they do not need a passport) I do not suggest living there xD. For instance those underwater tanks... are probably much more underwater now xD.

      @@AdamEatsTheWorld Most digital travelers when talking about a country they visit include information that could be helpful to the viewers that want to visit and perhaps spend some time there. You spent 36 minutes talking about some WWII relics and Japanese influence on the island. Caption read: Exploring Saipan but all you did was visit some monuments. Where were the beaches, restaurants and places to stay? If your idea is exploring, why don't you take the Niagra river and go to the Congo and visit Egyptian pyramids? You are hands down the most boring and least informative traveler I have seen here. I kept waiting for you to say some thing significant. My bad!
