So nice to hear a piece of contemporary music that doesn't require that "chiffing" effect that almost all of them use.

I had a go. Very interesting experience. My husband described it as “a vague droning noise that was not unpleasant”. This is high praise from him! I said, “well it is a pandemic foretold”, and he replied “mm, yes”.

Thank you for this very helpful tutorial, allowing the recorder community to better play and appreciate the music of composer Mel Fitzhugh.

Love this! As a scientist and a recorder player, I am quite interested in the physics of the "buzzing" of the sound produced - presumably caused by the amplification of the vibrations of the vocal chords into the recorder (?). During the pandemic when I must play alone, I like to do the drone of a Medieval piece while playing the melody...it sounds a bit like the hurdy-gurdy is playing along...I will have to try this Pandemic piece (which is also contained in Eric Haas's Alto Recorder Solo Book).

When I tried (only a bit so far) I found the close intervals incredibly hard. The buzzing (which I think probably the beats of the frequencies) was so intense - it seemed to force my voice to play the recorder’s note.

It's very interesting how the overtones interact between your voice and your instrument. It's lovely. I bet it would be even better live.

I’m not sure I care for the composition itself but I love your instructions for singing and playing at the same time. 🎼🎶❤️

This is lovely and definitely worth attempting to play (and buying the sheet music to support the composer of course)
I love the haunting sound of voice and recorder together.
Jill Kemp's playing of Arnold's Fantasy for recorder on her album of 20th C English recorder works has a lot of singing and playing and it's gorgeous.

I would looooove to learn this piece someday, but I've only had my recorder for a little over a month, so I think I'll come back to it 😂

I've been playing with that effect since i was a little kid. I've never managed to sing something different than I'm playing and kinda suspect that I'm always very quietly singing the same notes as the recorder even when I'm playing normally. My brain seems to just stop working when i try to do both. I do lots of harmony stuff. I just haven't figured out how to do this.

    • @honeychurchgipsy6
      @honeychurchgipsy6 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@Sharon Hilchie - me too - I can also sing a drone note above or below the melody I am playing, or play a drone and sing a melody - but I cannot sing and play two different melodies.
I think that, just as you say, I unconsciously sing what I'm playing in my head all the time, so, my fingers and my voice have to match.
I am going to carry on trying though!!

Just a random question : Are there any composers from the Romantic period who wrote for the recorder???

  • @lizh8041

    omg this is so cool!!
does anyone know like, around what grade would this be?? i'm wondering if i could play it for an entrance bc it's so unique exam but it has to be g6 or higher
like both parts look fairly simple on their own but idk what grading combining the two would make it, i think it's quite an advanced technique

Hi Sarah - just went to buy your album Constellations as a digital download and noticed it's only available as an MP3.
Are there any plans to make a higher quality download available - such as a FLAC file??

Here you see, into which it results when composers and musicans have too much time: strange pieces dedicated to COVID 19 😳😂

It beats me how you can get the airflow necessary to play the recorder in tune at the same time as you activate the vocal chords.

    Hello Sarah

  • @Dave-nm8uk

What - no lyrics! Seriously - for some other instruments, such as guitars, ukuleles etc. playing gets more complicated because the instruments are often used to accompany voice, and the singer is often the instrument player - which adds an additional task to the performance mix.
Learning to play an instrument to accompany your own voice and also remembering the lyrics adds extra cognitive load. Here the task might be simplified slightly, because it's only the notes for the voice which have to be practised and remembered.
I liked the short garklein example - but glad it didn't last long!
