Currently in the reserves DEP program and I leave for basic training in august. Enlisted on 4/21/21 Gotta say it has been so much more laid back than I thought it would be. I’ve done 1 drill weekend and I’m serving at Elmendorf, AFB in Anchorage Alaska. Love it so far I’m so glad I picked the reserves and not the national guard. Reserves gives you so many more options.
Been thinking about the reserves a lot lately considering i have less than 2 years left active. I learned so much information and this was a great video.
In the guard you can get E7 in 8 years and O5 in 9 years, as long as you are in the clique. A additional benefit is, you dont have to be worried about being stationed at cannon afb or minot afb.
Reserves is national and their mission is international. That's why have national database. ANG is state oriented and their priority is states side but can be deployed internationally
That's funny because the Guard offers everything you stated. Technician (Civilian job with the Guard) while being in the Guard and getting the double retirement, AGR is active GUARD reserve so yes the Guard obviously offers that program also. Interstate transfer allows folks to move from State to State so you are not stuck to one State. The biggest difference between Guard and Reserve is that the Guard offers more educational benefits coming in with State and Federal benefits and we offer combat jobs unlikd the reserves. Hit me up for more benefits about the Guard!
There's pros and cons to the guard but from my experience more cons. You're correct on the interstate but it's based on the state accepting. As well guard is title 32 which is state funds only federally funded when on title 10 which is potus activation.
@@airforcereservesgtwalker you are incorrect on the funding standpoint. We get State and Federal educational benefits regardless of title one may serve under. As far as the transfers into other States- all states want the added gain so most cases they will take you but worse case someone can still drill with the State while still being assigned to another state. Overall, Good information but most of what you said applies to Guard and Reserve.
@@airforcereservesgtwalker Sounds good. So I'm going for the reserve. My next question is; If I make a high score on the ASVAB then pass the physical at MEPS with flying colors do you think I'll have a chance to select Special Investigations. I'm really liking that job
I’m planning to change career from IT field to Medical field and I already got my Bacherlor’s Degree in IT. My question is when or can I use GI Bill as AF reserve? can I use it right away after signing up for 6 years commitment? or do I have to wait for 6 years? I already passed Asvab and Physical test. I hope you can help me before my enlistment.
@@airforcereservesgtwalker Hey Sgt Walker I want to go for security force but dont know if i should do reserve or ANG is there a any particular advantage or disadvantage in terms of SF for example do both components have the same job opportunities like the C.A.T.M S2 Raven or K9 jobs
@@javilobby899 so K9 won’t be on the part time component but CATM is there that is my career actually outside recruiting. So reserve you have the flexibility of location to drill so if you wanted security forces but the local unit doesn’t have a spot and a unit 1 hour away does that’s out of state you can still take that out of state location and stay home. I’ll always favor reserve over guard just because were federal and receive federal benefits. Guard is dependent on state to state like the guard unit here lost their bonuses when Covid took off but us reservist kept ours
@@airforcereservesgtwalkerThat's interesting so if my home base in Texas don't have the opportunity that i want i can look to other bases that do as long as it's available on the part time component that is very good sir and yeaa it makes sense federal side would be more secure on benefits thanks for the reply sir
Something I'm wondering if you'd be able to go over is going from Active duty into the reserves and commissioning as an officer through the reserves and how that process would work.
I talked to a recruiter about IMA, the recruiter stated after joining the reserves it’ll take up to a year after being in the reserves in order to be accepted to go IMA. Is this true and can you elaborate? Thank you
You'd have to clarify with your recruiter but I've heard that if the tech school is over 6 months long they may allow your family to move with you but i've not confirmed that.
Is the RMSV accurate for viewing vacancies at each unit? Also are you still able cross train if your new unit has availability for your current AFSC, like will they make you stay as your current AFSC.
Not sure if anybody knows the answer to this . I’m waiting for Human Resources to get back to me . But If I currently work for Usps as a full time career employee . Can I join the Air Force reserves while keeping my current job? Can the Usps let me go because of basic training being 8 weeks ?
Question I’m security forces in the reserves I chose a base that is far out of my range as far as commute and I wanna transfer to a closer base. Any tips on how I should go about that?
Any Luck? Always the State Reserve in 15 States. No actual pay unless they request a deployment & you agree. I’m 39 may do State or Coast Guard auxiliary… better than nothing.
I'm 39 will turn 40 on February. A recruiter just told me that I can't join the Air Force Reserve. Said I have to graduate before 40yrs. Can someone help verify that information for me please 🙏.
I enlisted as a reservist just waiting on my ship date and dang this was way more information than I ever knew about. Super informative. Thank you

you guys explain this very well. please do more

Exceptionally helpful video! Ty SSgt Walker and Kyle!
He’s now TSgt Walker. He’s a straightforward guy.

Btw this has changed, there is no limit for va rating. If you are still in the IRR you can get an updated PHA and bypass MEPs
Thank you so much for this video, what a gem of a find

BMT is year round there is a new group of trainees every week

Reserve deploy on a rotation usually 1 ever 4 years. You can volunteer to deploy if you want

Once you have your bachelors you can try the deserving airman program
so if you’re going for the free college & to play college football. they will reschedule your drill dates ??
As long as you communicate that with your unit they should allow you to make up the drills days

You can do both and your job legally has to hold your job when you leave for basic training
What height do you have to be to go into the air force reserve. I'm 5'2 do I qualify?
You qualify as long as you meet the weight and body fat percentage requirements.

Do I need to take any exams if I have a DBA ?

Sorry the cut off age is 39
I think you could get an age waiver if there is a high need job

Nope 8 years total. First 6 years Full-time, Reserve or Guard & the Last 2 years are usually IRR/Individual Ready Reserve.
