    Paul Chambers remains one of the most recorded and important bassists in the history of Jazz music. His lines have graced some of the most iconic recordings of all time including albums by Wes Montgomery, Thelonoius Monk, John Coltrane, and (of course) Miles Davis. Today I explore one of his great original bass melodies, where it comes from, and why it's so important to learn it.

    You are terrific young man. I grew up in that "era" and remember it well. (I'll be 79 in April.) You are a gift to the new era. I recognize the health challenges you so candidly expressed...but keep up the good work. I am a man who is a believer...if you get my drift...so you are on my prayer list............

    Paul Chambers has always been my favorite bassist. If I see an album with him on the credits I buy it just because I know I will enjoy listening to the bass at minimum. Since he played with so many greats, I'm usually not disappointed with the albums as a whole.
    Like Oscar Peterson, PC has his signature sound. You always know it's them hearing recordings they are on no matter what the tune or style is. I don't hear that with most of the bassists of that era. Maybe for me it's because I started listening to Giant Steps album 30 years ago and his sound was imprinted on me at the age of 12. Same for Oscar Peterson.
    My music life took a weird path and even though I played a lot of jazz at an adequate but mediocre level in my 20's, I never really focused on being a jazz bassist and explored a lot of other genres/mastered none. Thanks for the PDF as it is about time I try to actually play some Paul Chambers lines.
    Love your videos! Best bass content on YT by far!

    Not only did he set the bar, but what he did for the double bass' metamorphosis from orchestra pit to small jazz ensemble configuration, (often bowing arco bass) will always define the hard bop style, and sound, with all of its unforgettable music.
    Part of the great Detroit/New York transplanted double bass triumvirate, that also included his contemporary and partner in crime Doug Watkins, along with The Maestro Ron Carter, they all learned to play music in the Detroit Public School system back in the 1940s, and double bass at the same high school, Detroit Cass Tech.
    What Mr. P.C. accomplished with Bill Evans, during his all too brief lifetime, alternately playing off and laying down the percussive rhythms in the oft times conflicted marriage of piano and double bass, in my opinion made them the greatest foundation of any jazz rhythm section ever recorded. Listen to their mesmerizing magic on Oliver Nelson's Stolen Moments. Of course, when it comes to music, whenever the argument is made for something being "The Greatest", I always point to Kind of Blue. Then, I rest my case. Thx.

      There are a couple of prominent versions of the tune that really differ in the notes. Sam Jones’ version is very popular. It’s played a little up and leaves out a lot of that crazy chromaticism that PC’s version had. It’s much more straight-forward, but when you listen hard to the original, you hear almost Barry Harris-type harmony. It’s very in the cracks. Thank you for watching! 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

    Great video, and I love the sound of your beautiful bass. I'm a huge fan of Paul Chambers all my life, since I first heard him in the '60s as a teenager. However, I must respectfully disagree that he was "the most in-demand bassist" of his era, although I know how huge his repertoire is. I think Ray Brown was just as "in-demand" and just as great as Paul, and there's a few others I'd put right up there with Ray and Paul. But there really is no "Number 1"---- let's just admire all these guys as equally great musicians and enormous giants of the bass.

    • @pdbass
      @pdbass  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Fortunately for us, much of this time spanning Ray’s career (‘51-‘65) was spent with Oscar Peterson. I challenge you to find a bassist that played on more records with more people between 1955-1964 than Paul Chambers. His Blue Note appearances alone are staggering, not to mention Riverside, Atlantic, et al. I never tried to draw any comparisons or tell someone who their favorite bassist was or is. When we look at the history of Jazz, particularly at that formative time from 1955-1961, nobody approaches his output. In 1959, he made significant records (separately) with Miles, Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, and Bill Evans. I mean, come on now.

    Paul, I was working on this with a student and in the 9th bar I can't reconcile the A to Cs in that line against the Bmb5 to E7.... What do you think is happening there? It doesn't seem that the piano is playing those changes there later in the song either.

    Great video and I love PC. But, the "no doubt greatest soloist" statement seems a bit of a stretch given his career overlapped Scott Lafaro, Mingus, Oscar Pettiford..

    • @pdbass
      @pdbass  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not quite.
      Lafaro didn't play with Bill Evans until 1961. Listen to his playing on "The Arrival of Victor Feldman" (1958). He was a PC devotee until he found himself with Evans' trio.
      OP had relocated to Denmark in 1958. His legacy is set (see th-cam.com/video/GnkrsoqUwxw/w-d-xo.html), but he was not "on the scene" in the years preceding his death in in 1960.
      Mingus is Mingus and in a class all by himself.
      Perhaps I should have said "arguably".
      Take two of PC's solos from Coltrane's "Blue Train" album in 1958.
      The title track and his bowed solo on "Moment's Notice". Those are ARGUABLY two of the best bass solos...ever. Period.
