This short version is short and sweet. Andrew, you are a very good teacher. The way you explain is very easy for non-writer like me to understand and to apply. Tumb-up!
Thank you very much. I've only got today to write 1000 words of scene one of a story but I haven't begun yet because I want to understand my foundation before I start creating.
I've definitely been accused of that and worse! Some would argue that writing in general is boring. You sit at a desk or computer and just... write. Nothing terribly exciting about that. May I suggest you choose another hobby besides writing that might give you the excitement you need? Some people like sports, music, etc. Everything is boring to someone, but you might find something less boring to you. Thank you for watching! :)
I don't understand how a writer could ever get writer's block, so-called. My problem is having too much...and being unable to get it down.- James Dickey
Charles Mills The experiences are all different. I rarely get writers' block either, but some people do. There are different challenges depending on the writer.
I know this is an old video, but I'd like to say I disagree with point 3 @ 5:35 'if you open it, close it'. The short story form should mean the reader has to do more work. That's why they are so hard to write. Not everything is handed to the reader on a platter like in a novel, but the writing still has to be engaging enough to read on. As a reader of short stories, I often expect to have open endings, this way I get to use my own imagination and keep the story with me long after reading, so I can visualise a variety of resolutions to any open ended questions the writer leaves. As a writer of short stories, it is often difficult to chose which threads to leave open. You don't want the reader to scream in frustration, rather develop a balance of resolution and lively curiosity so the story lives on. Just my 2 cents worth.
I listen to both this and the longer version about once a week for the past month. I really appreciate this one when I am prepping my writing space, because it targets what I am about to do and I am not concerned about publishing at that moment. I have listened to your novel in 3 weeks every 2 or 3 days as well. I would love to have a writing only version of that one as well :D I love your vids! keep it up!

I really like your video presentation it was excellent, very helpful and informative. You never wasted any time you were straight to the point. I have been writing for years. I finally publish my first book on Amazon June of this year. I enjoyed watching your video. It helps me to understand how to write an effected short story. I have many books I am working on but I did not want the stories to be so lengthy. Thanks. I will subscribe to your channel.
Dear Andrew, how did you come across this method? I write a lot and find this rather productive, very great method not to mention your voice is AWESOME.
A fan blade cleaner finds himself in a battle between life or death when he finds out he cleaned someone's third fan blade incorrectly. In order to solve this predicament, fan blade cleaner must go back in time and ensure he cleans it correctly the first time.
Raymond Carver - What We Talk About When We Talk About Love .... what's the problems and actions etc in this short story? I know some books are different but I think these are the interesting books because it's hard to tell what makes them so interesting.
This is very well-presented, but like with many things, it is easier said than done....even with this "formula" I still struggled quite a bit just to come up with a GOOD short story.
RantingForSanity I think it was Ray Bradbury who said this: "write one short story every week; I doubt you'll have 48 bad short stories after the year is done." I've kind of altered this to finish something--whether it be a chapter, a short story, or lengthy poem--at least once a week, and write in my journal for practice in between short stories. Just write a lot and read a lot. You'll get the hang of it
This is how my students learn to write a good story in three easy steps. There are clear and concise hints to boost writing skils in English. You can find it in my video "Write a story in 3 steps". Hope you find it useful !!
Dude your Blog link doesn't work, your short story link doesn't work and the genuswriter website link doesn't work!!!! What's going on? I was quite looking forward to reading some of your work and seeing your advice in practice.
I enjoyed watching your video you made some good points! I am currently working on my first book it is a self- help personal journey story. I do not consider myself as a writer or an aspiring author, but I do feel that writing this book is something I have to do. Since I am not part of a writing community is difficult for me to find someone to point me in the right direction. Not just when it comes to writing itself but getting all writings previewed, edited and just the whole process altogether. I feel I have a powerful story of overcoming obstacles but I have reached the point of self-doubt. I wonder if I will be the only person that thinks that the story is good LOL, is this common?
Clinton Mccoy It can be hard to sell short stories in general. If you write a novel, it's easier. If people can relate to it, even better. You can write a novel and publish it at Smashwords and/or Amaazon, and it might sell some copies. You never know till you try.
Our school is making us write a narrative in 43 mins planning and all according to a prompt and i can’t type fast enough it plan a good story in that time :(
A D'Costa I'm sure you will get it done. Keep up the hard work. Writing is something anyone can do for putting the time and effort to master it. Good luck to you.
What happened to is audio? I watched two of his recent videos and it was degraded from the "How to Write a Short Story in One Hour" non-abbreviated version.

Same here I am writing a bunch of different stories and I still have way more I want to get out :(
Pretty sure having too much to write is a form of writer's block.
I've had this problem for a long time. I would know how I want to write the end or middle but I just didn't know how to start of even write it down
+Angel Starfire thats pretty much how writers block works. you know what will happen, but when you write it down it comes out as garbage.
This is an AMAZING tutorial! Good information, easy to understand and helpfull.
I hope you make more tutorials!
