    After y'all line bored the arm, which direction did you put the bushings in? Grease groove out, but you need the clearance between the outer movement to be small enough that when greasing it actually goes into those two pin bushings. If not, as I wrote two weeks ago, just drill both sides, tap, and put in separate grease zerks. But, some of those pins were not ment to move, pressed in pin that does not move, that is why there were no bushings in the arms. That is why there are bushing in the cylinders to be greased. The only way grease would be inside the arm, was wear at the pin that allowed grease the bypass when greasing the cylinder bushing over the years. If it were meant to move there would be a zerk at those points on the arm. But if you don't drill this and tap it, it is going to happen again...stop that pin from moving in the arm..!
    If you continue to want to grease that pin in the arm, is it your intention to fill the entire arm with grease? Y'all know it is hollow, from the top to bottom right? That will take a lot of grease ..lol...

    I'm pretty sure the first hole I tried doing without having an instruction manual, and precise measuring and math calculations ruining the moment was like bunging a hotdog down a hallway. It probably needed more reaming for fitting way oversized bushings, after having several repair attempts before L.O.L
    when you start out with no experience with a lathe or mill you'll soon figure out what not to do after knocking the tips off $400 worth of cutting tools. The good thing these days is the amount of guys that are experienced that have TH-cam channels, a guy can watch and learn from at home in the shop. Thanks for a fun video, take care guys.

  • @jenniferwhitewolf3784
    @jenniferwhitewolf3784 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Inner bushing needs to either lock the shaft on place firmly, or have its own grease groove and zerk for filling. In between like this, bare bore with no lube and free floating is prone to poor lubrication entry and odd movement with rust and friction, possible eventual seizing in place. Either cut a spiral grease groove on the center of that shaft that is fed by its own zerk, or better yet, cut the groove in the bushing and direct feed it.

  • @wornoutwrench8128

    I don't work on machines this small, but they are the same as the bigger ones.
    The upper boom pin should be tight in the boom. It should take a big sledge hammer to move it.
    Quite often when we change out cylinders, you can't even move that pin. Which is good, it should not rotate at all. (Makes changing the cylinders a little more tricky but it can be done)
    You want the cylinders to rotate on the pin on the bushings that are greased, not the pin rotating in the boom boss that has no provision for grease since it is not a moving part.
    When rebuilding a machine, the machinist would bore the boss to just under and finish with a proper cylinder hone so it was the exact size and a smooth finish. The new pin is fit with a big hammer into the boom.
    Assemble with lots of Moly grease. Moly is the best thing going for slow speed, high pressure applications like pins and bushings.

    I suspect the pin bore in the boom is not square to the axis of the hydraulic pistons. This is causing the pin to try to twist in the bore when the twist should all be between the pin and the hydraulic pistons. That's why they have grease and bushings. If you allow the pin to move in the boom arm you will wear it out quckly.

    So what was the final diagnosis in summary? Bad line bore? Wrong tolerances? Rusting of the pin and/or bore? Metal shavings or other foreign debris between pin and bore? All of the above? During reassembly, clean and put liberal amounts of grease (like a whole tube), in the void in the center of the boom. During reassembly, put the pin in the boom first then connect cylinder rods on each end similar to the disassembly procedure. When knocking the pin out, put a ratchet strap around the boom and the opposite side cylinder to keep it from wandering away and binding the pin up. Lessons learned when I removed cylinders for rebuilding. I think the whole problem was that the pin and bore was not pre lubricated during reassembly.

  • @Anteater6788
    @Anteater6788 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    What about a sleeve retainer compound on the shaft to lock it into the boom?

    • @blackw0lf993
      @blackw0lf993 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It needs to move to relieve the stress as the boom moves from load to unloaded stresses. The fact that they had to rebuild the hole to begin with and not just the cylinder bushings is a testimonial to it needs to move. With that said Deere prob never thought these machines would gain the hours they are getting on them and people wouldn’t trade them off before this point. Adding either 2-3 shallow 3-6 inch long smooth grease groves ( rough cut ones will increase wear rather than lubricate and prevent it) or drill two 1/8-3/16 even up to 1/4 holes and tap for a grease fitting to access pin area with grease would be better idea ling term ( maybe winter project). Others have stated drill on bottom or top of boom if it was me ( unless Deere has made a spit in the casting for one there ) I wouldn’t do that as those are the directions the pin exerts the most force to those flanges ( especially if one was to go with a 1/4 hole) I would rub it through the motions and place the hole in the position that it has the least load on it. ( there’s not going to be a place where no load exist ) but the top 2/3 from about 9 to 10 o clock foreword will receive loads from lifting the bottom from areas from digging if my guess is right ( all booms makes are slightly different as to angle and build of the boom frame) the best area for a fitting would be 8-10 clock position as you face the boom from the machine right side or that position that faces the back of the machine. With all that said if this stops the squeaking I would stop I would only groove or add grease fitting if the squalling hole continues.
      There also maybe places on the castings already prepared for the fittings thus eliminating the guess work for where a fittings should be installed. I’ve had to install these in other brands before to get the grease in there. Also packing the hole full of grease is an option if there not a bunch of metal chips in the boom. If so then grease fittings and or grooves or combo of them.

    I don't understand why the pin is able to rotate in the boom. I don't see enough grease working it's way in there over the years to prevent the issue. Maybe the movement is small enough that the assembly grease will prevent it. I'd almost think shimming it tight would make it more prone to rotating the pin in the boom. But what do I know, I'm just one of those damn engineers.

    If you'd have let it rust a few more days, the pin would have frozen in the boom. Problem solved. You'll never get a Toobie award (is that what they're called?) Unless you upgrade your actors.
    Best regards from Boone county.

    Why not drill a hole in that bushing and install another grease point?

    The beginning of the video was hilarious. Jason, Todd, and Aaron are a cast of characters. You're lucky to have friends like them.

    You would think that there would be grease fittings on the boom side.

    • @michaela.660

      I'd drilled at least two on each side before assembly !!!!!

      @@michaela.660 I recommended tapping extra grease fittings one or two videos ago to help get the grease get where it needs to be. Guess that will be the next fix if this fix don't work. ;-)

    That was quite a production.. LOL Also, I agree that there should be a way to get grease back in there, along side that pin.
