Morning Tom!! When my boys were young, we only ate deer meat. We were allowed 6 deer back then. That usually supplied a out 400 pounds of meat. I agree, not everyone can live like that. Deer would be gone!! Beaver meat is one of my favorite wild game. They are delicious and most people throw the meat away. Now that I'm older and don't have two hungry boys to feed, my wife and I eat mostly beef. We live in a rural community and I buy a beef from local friends and sometime barter for it. Just yesterday I got 10 chickens from a neighbor. fresh locally grown. Sometimes I think people just don't understand how we live in the country. I once had a person tell me I should buy my meat at the store instead of killing a cow!!!! I could go on and on!!! Can't fix stupid!!! Good luck fishing and I pray your wife does well!!!

Good morning Stacy, Hahaha I love this comment. I couldn't agree with you more. That is so true and you're exactly right about buying local. That's how I get my vegetables. I don't have time to do both hunt fish fish and beef farmer.
Yes buy a beef at the grocery store so you don't have to kill a cow. lol hahahaha I am going to be chuckling about this all day long.
My daughter has raising 4 boys right now they're eating her out of house and home so I so I understand you and your boys.
Thank you very much Stacy for the care package I just got it picked up yesterday. What a great surprise toTo see the tanning solution and a bottle of Maple syrup.
I love the muskrat hide. I will be finding something special to do with that hide.
One of my grandsons is old enough to go hunting this year. So I'll be taking him deer hunting maybe even a little bit of bear.
The next one down is 2 fidgety to be able to set in a tree stand. So I have promised to take him out raccoon trapping. He wants to make sure he gets to do something fun also. lol
Thank you for sharing some of your lifestyle in this comment. That's what it's all about we are a dying generation We are a dying breed.
This has always been a part of my life. I cannot understand people that's think by going to the grocery store and buying beef you are saving a cow.

My grandfather told me one time if an older gentleman gives you advice while he's cutting an apple and eating the slices right off the blade you should listen to him.Tom that's how I look at you and your channel. Thanks for the advice. And God Bless you and your wife. I pray for her healing.

Good morning Russell, Thank you very much! :) I couldn't agree with you more about an old Feller eating an apple off a hunting knife is a good time to listen and pay attention.
I've done that my whole life and I still do it to this day even though I'm getting a little bit older and these old fellows of passing away. It's a good time to be a sponge and soak up as much knowledge as you possibly can.
All of that soaking up knowledge over the years has helped me in my lifestyle more than you can imagine.
Thank you very much for praying for my wife I really appreciate it it really puts a smile on her face to know that all of you are praying for her well-being.

Tom this Steve , I grew up eating deer , Perch , rabbit , pheasants , bass , walleye. Hunted fishing my whole life and love it and my family loves it. You're very smart and love your videos. Trolls need not comitt or watch if they don't want to learn from some one with the experience to share with people and enjoy it and learn something about the great outdoors.

I agree with you whole-heartedly Tom. There are many game species many people won't eat simply because they choose not to. We think "outside the box", and eat cheaply. We still buy many items, but also we buy in bulk and use it to plan meals that go a long way. Many people say they get bored eating the same thing until it's gone. Left-overs often taste better after they age together. I do not waste food. It's how I was raised and have lived.

My mother born and raised Down East Coastal Maine .
When most lived and hunted and caught most of their life .
She met my Dad in NC and raised a family ...
I spent many of my best childhood times crawling rock and raking blueberries .
i have always dreamed of a permanent return ,but life and the wild extremes of winters
keep me Southern fried and hot ...
I'm tuning in to hear your voice and the accent of my relative's who no longer
walk the wildwoods or clam bake on a cool summer evening .
and to catch a glimpse of dream I've never forgotten .
thanks for the memories that come rushing in like high tide on a full moon .

I do the same thing when I sit in the woods I always remember back to my past of different hunting trips different deer than I've taken a rabbit hunts always remembering the memories I'm being in the woods.

on a cool summer morning as the cows huddle for warmth
and the smell of clover and hay hanging heavy in the mist
Eagles hunting in the river at sunrise .
Campfires made for singing ghost stories and marshmallows
My memories just as sweet as the ever elusive golden crust .
i romanticized the heck out of it every summer ,but i keep my mouth shut in winter !

You cannot believe how much trouble I have gotten into over the years when I start talking about bass fishing. I live on the largest bass fishing lake in the state of Maine. People come to this lake from all over the country to bass fish. Hahahaha I am not kidding Sometimes they have tournaments with 300 boats or more. If not it sure seems that cause I can hear him from my house.
It's kind of like talking about politics at the Sunday table lol.
You have a great week of fishing I do know deep down inside that you guys have as much of a Passion for bass fishing as I have a Passion for everything else lol.

Hello Tom, What a great video. I can almost image what type of comment that troll made. They are so ignorant or uninformed. You're lifestyle in this day and age is unique. Guys like me can hunt and fish and get some of our food but I am far from the skills that you have. That's one reason I watch your channel, I learn so much. Another reason is that I think you and I just sort of " click " in regards to our beliefs and our outlook. I'm certain that if we lived near each other we would be good friends. I don't say that to just everybody Joe because you watch my videos you can see that I am a loner.
Just like yourself I know this because look at the size of your cabin LOL the new cabin that I built at Beaver Creek last year is 8 ft by 12 ft lol I figure if someone shows up to visit they probably ought to bring a tent. Lol because there's no room in the cabin.

    • @EastGrandWoodsman

Good morning, Thank you very much! :) boy do I like this comment I like running into someone that's just like me. Someone that doesn't like to be around crowds someone that doesn't like to go out to restaurants to eat. And most certainly someone that keeps their Harvest it does not practice catch and release. In my opinion catch-and-release only hurts the fish population. Catch-and-release creates small fish not large ones I don't understand why the biologists don't get this I have been watching it for 50 years.
With the introduction of Pike in our Waters it is more evident to me than ever before. The pike have thin down the fish numbers and the fish in those legs have gotten much bigger. And some of these Lakes I have been fishing for 30 to 40 years so I really have a good idea of what's going on in them.
      Thanks for the great comment.

Mother Nature has a way of getting rid of stupid. It's called disease and food shortage when it comes to Mother Nature. If there's not enough food in an area and the animals don't move they die off. Well you get where I'm going here with food shortages coming to around the world Mother Nature is getting ready to do what it does best get rid of stupid LOL

Living by the seasons is also kinda hard in Maine. The seasons don't always jive especially in Spring and Fall. It's the lifestyle that counts though; if you can't handle it, you shouldn't live in the country. Recently a person in our area (who just moved here from a city dwelling) posted a picture of a coyote and said it was beautiful. It was a very healthy coyote and beautiful fur but "locals" said they would have shot it and the person who posted got very upset. Problem is, the coyote numbers here are growing and many people with livestock as well as domestic dogs and cats are going missing. As you and others have said, "You just can't fix stupid."

    • @EastGrandWoodsman
      @EastGrandWoodsman  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Good morning, Thank you very much! :) there are so many seasons in the state of Maine that I did not list even a fraction of the different seasons and different seasons of food that can be gathered here in the great state of Maine. You are absolutely right really do this legal seasons line up with the Harvest. As far as fishing game is concerned we don't need to eat from the woods they say the state of Maine has plenty of welfare programs.
Well I don't need to tell you that I disagree with that statement LOL
I couldn't agree with you more about the coyote don't get me wrong I love Coyotes I love hearing them but I hate what they do to my deer population my rabbit population my small game population. They have really decimated the herd of deer in northern Maine and we really need to thin them down.
We cannot fix stupid when stupid throws Common Sense out the window. Lol

That's right this so much to learn about living off the land learning what's edible learning the weather learning safe times to be in the woods and on the water it is all in one package called survival.
I can tell that you are a very wise man also thank you very much for this awesome comment.

Good morning Sam, Hahahaha You're absolutely right Sam I don't let them get me down.
Figured it made for a good topic and I was sitting in the boat and lost track of time. I really wanted to share how I have done it all these years. I don't have time to be a farmer and a hunter and fishermen all at the same time. So I get my vegetables from bomb sands things like that all locally grown.
Especially now we have a quite a few Is great farm stands in the state now. The local farmer is really making a big comeback and the state of Maine would be small land food plots.
I hope you're having a great day my friend!

You're right. I can't sit in a treestand all day but I can sit and fish all day. I've tried tree stand hunting. It's ok but I get bored staring at the same trees all day. I like still hunting and tracking. I can move and explore and see things that the average tree stand hunter likely will never see. I do sit periodically. I usually sit the first couple hours of the morning. From legal hunting time until 9 or 930 am, I usually sit or still hunt very very slowly. Then I walk until usually 1130 or noontime when people are leaving the woods for lunch. Somedays I sit more often. Others I do not. On those hot days, I may sit the first hour or two and I may go explore the local swamp or a food source. Either way, we all do what we want and what we think is right. Don't let these trolls get to you. They are like a school yard bully. They talk a lot until you are face to face and you crack them in the mouth then they got nothing to say.
I'm a Bass fisherman. This is the beauty of humans. We can agree to disagree and be civil about it. In some ways, I agree with you on some points. I feel the same way about other fish.
With the way this world is going and the current political administration, living off the land looks like it's going to be a very good skill to master because let's face it shortages of food and gas and everyday essentials are becoming more and more prominent.

Where you are in Maine, it may be different. Where I am, the Whitetail Deer population is exploding. We still have an overabundance of predators such as Coyotes but Deer are definitely getting more prominent. Personally, I think IFW needs to look at different areas of Maine and focus on management in each specific areas versus saying this is how we are going to do it for the entire state. As for breaking laws, I won't break laws but if I have exhausted all other possibilities for food and nothing has panned out, I will absolutely take an extra Deer rather it is legal or not. My family will not go hungry just because of some law.

I think a lot of people are scared of eating Bass, Raccoon, Porcupine etc. We all hear about the diseases and people don't know much about it and I think it scares them. Others don't think about all the Rabbits etc that are safe to eat. They view these animals as a nuisance and that's it. They don't look at them as a food source.

Good morning David, Thank you very much! :) when I was younger I couldn't sit in a tree stand either. I always had to be on the move scouting and looking what's over the next Ridge. As I got older hiking through the woods has become more difficult so I began to sit in tree stands. I still do a lot of scouting but I do that through the summer months September October leading up to November.
Here's the fun part now I definitely Place some tree stands on the back doors of a piece of woods where I know people are moving around during the day. Over the years by sitting in the tree stand plug in the back door I have taken some pretty nice bucks from the still Hunters pushing through a piece of woods. Just a little food for thought here.
I'm the same way I'd never leave the woods from sunup to sundown I have taken many deer between the hours of 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. when most people are sitting back at Camp having coffee and a hot lunch.

Good morning David, Thank you very much! The Rustic Log Cabin is in far northern Maine. Beaver Creek deer hunting camp is in Western Maine. We have more deer per square mile in Western Maine. The deer population in northern Maine there are many square miles with no deer in it. Our harsh Winters and high coyote numbers really do a number on the deer population. It's good to hear that your deer population is exploding. You really have to be a good deer hunter in the state of Maine to take a deer regularly. When I was younger and could get around the whole lot faster I took a deer every single fall without missing. Now with age I still take my share of deer but it is a little more difficult.
Yes they treat different areas in the state of Maine different and how they are trying to establish the deer population. One of the big things here that I think will be helping the deer population is fewer and fewer Hunters each year. I think that'll make a big difference around my Beaver Creek deer camp is years come. Hard Winters in northern Maine are always going to be an issue for the whitetail deer as well as lack of food. For several years now the loggers have been really laying into the cedar thickets that is making a difference. These Cita thickets are there winter habitat but the white tail in northern Maine so I do have some concerns.

Good morning, Thank you very much! I couldn't agree with you more! So much knowledge has been lost over the years about what is edible food in the wild like bass porcupine raccoon all of it Etc. What I mean by this is even eating food is a seasonal thing for me. I don't eat panfish in the summer months other than white perch. I don't eat yellow perch in the summer months and I don't eat summer month caught Bass. I only eat those kind of pan fish caught through the ice in the winter time. So what I am doing with my channel is trying to share what I do and what I eat. But for the most part I think most people have gotten so far away from eating Wild game but they are petrified of it and their talk to me scared of it. But for me and you know as well as I do there are so many chemicals and additives added to growing a chicken or growing a cow or anything like this that you buy out of the grocery store. Don't even get me started on farm-raised fish the most polluted fish on the earth that you can eat as a farm-raised salmon. So many chemicals and poisons in a farm-raised salmon that I am surprised that people will purchase it out of a grocery store. I know that if I'm eating a groundhog it is grass-fed I know that if I'm eating a black bear it is grass-fed most people think a bear is a scavenger well it's not it primarily eats fruits vegetables and grass. I know this because every time I open up the stomach on a Maine black bear it is mostly filled with apples in the fall or completely full of green grass. I also know that where I am hunting there's a hundred square miles of nothing to me you probably can't get any cleaner of a meat to eat. It's the same thing with raccoons and I'm going to do a video on raccoons. I would not eat a raccoon that I took from the city that has spent an entire lifetime eating trash and garbage out of a garbage can. I can guarantee you the raccoons and I'm eating I only eating stuff that is found in Mother Nature and I'm good with that. But I do think this is a point that should be made that I don't think anyone should be eating a raccoon that lives on garbage out of a trash can.
But it's like anything as a generation of people goes by we keep throwing away knowledge how to knowledge that is not good in my opinion for any group of people do not learn from our mistakes in the past and gained knowledge to pass forward.

Hello Tom, You tell it like it is and don't worry about some miserable pecker head. All I have to say to people like that is don't let the door hit you in the arse! Bye bye. I want to have your life style, I dream to fish and hunt all day. Off subject.... I just read where the State of Maine tagged 40 baby moose, 30 have died do to ticks. Thats some crazy numbers if you think of the entire herd. Tell your wife Edman will be praying for her tonight. How's the fishing been?

Good morning Edman, Thank you very much! :) Hahahahahaha you can't fix stupid that's for sure and you can't help people that throw Common Sense out the door. So you can bet your bottom dollar I don't give the trolls a whole lot of headspace LOL.
But it did give me a chance to make a pretty good video. These Straight Talk videos and don't pull any punches really do quite well. This video picked up 40 subscribers can you even imagine picking up 40 subscribers from one video. That doesn't happen very often and it really surprises me when it does.
Hahahaha I do feel that I have a pretty good lifestyle Edman. I have lived this way for so so many years I don't know how to live any other way.
I haven't seen that study but I believe every bit of it. From what I have been seeing in the woods the last few years especially when it comes to the Moose. We already know that the ticks are a huge problem in the state of New Hampshire when it comes to Moose. They will take down and kill a full-grown moose overtime because of the amount of ticks that are found on the moose. When it comes to ticks I don't know what the answer is but there is plenty of them in the woods that's for sure.
Thank you very much for your prayers for my wife it really made her day to know that all of you were praying for her. Her name is Diane just in case you would like to know.
      Tom
