Chipping bamboo at Bamboo Land, Australia

  • Chipping bamboo using a Bandit 250XP 12 inch disc chipper. This species is Bambusa oldhamii which is not a very good timber species - quite soft and starchy, so it has no real commercial value as timber poles in Australia. This row of bamboo was removed to expand our bamboo gardens with other better species of timber bamboo. After chipping the timber and foliage, all the root balls where transplanted to a new location. The chip (mulch) was then used to mulch the new plantings. Absolutely nothing gets wasted at Bamboo Land.

Bamboo is a perennial grass. This was the easiest removal effort I've ever seen. Without proper tools containing it can be a drudge. Supply and demand. Bamboo is the future to end clear cutting and deforestation.

I'm from Malaysia and we used bamboo for the flooring of our chicken coop. The constant feet traffic polished it so well and it's already been 5 years with barely a replacement. Bamboo will last as long as any timber if exposure to moisture is kept to a minimum.

While you aussies turn somebodies else bamboos into chips, we in Brazil grow your eucalyptus mainly for industrial firewood.
Our territory lacks coal deposits, but you eucalyptus felt so welcome overhere it may produce 360 tons per hectare of dry firewood when harvested within six years.

It's bamboo it's the fastest growing plant in the world, the chip is being used not wasted and Australia doesn't need to use bamboo for furniture or building materials because of its abundance of eucalyptus trees (which are the fastest growing tree in the world).

@@richnow1686 Clearly they know how to extract value from this weed variety.
Bamboo land also operate a nursery which supplies high quality disease free plants such as gingers and many other permaculture varieties to customers all around the country.
Turning an imported potential pest species into safe mulch and potting medium is value adding to a weed.
Pulling the clump splitting and replanting has plenty benefits to anyone who actually grows things, including propagation for sale.
If you have ever had to get rid of a clump of bamboo you would appreciate the efficiency of the method.
Even better quality bamboo is of little value without a pool of cheap exploited labour. This is why China controls the market for bamboo ply products.

I would have used Ratchet load binders and seperated into bundles that the chipper could handle then remove the root ball eliminating all that manual handling. I would then use the fork lift to pick up each bundle with a sling with choker hitch and place the bundle into the chipper hopper then remove the load binder.

@@DungNguyen-ru5kg To make low value furniture requires even lower value labour. Australian social security pays more than what a bamboo furniture worker makes. Any furniture made at local wages has to compete on price with products produced by slave labour.

It's a wicked mulch for gardens n fruit trees.
Though I believe selling the stalks would be cheaper and easier (space permitted), mulch what you don't sell then sell or use that.

Bamboo is used to make houses, cabinets and other furniture, but for you to grind bamboo like this, what are you going to do because I was wondering?

Why waste such an amazing resource. Bamboo is such a versitile product. I am confounded why Australia is mulching this wonderful plant.

Funny thing about bamboo root balls. They are still alive even after the main canes are cut, and if treated with care, will regrow. They can be easily transplanted this way.

Bamboo is the fastest growing tree. Literally these same size trees will be newly grown in one years time. It is invasive and spreads like wildfire. These people are not doing any harm or being wasteful.

Old Hamii is not invasive, it's a clumping bamboo.. A LOT of ignorance out there regarding bamboo.
