This game really does a good job of showing the "other side" of Nicole that they just kinda gloss over in the first game. In the first game, Nicole is just really angry at the world and with good reason: all the guys are absolute scumbags. In this game, though, she's kind of totally evil. Between not caring at all about her Mom dying and her abusive relationship with Ari, she doesn't really have much of a moral high ground. They don't play it for laughs either. The game WANTS US to be angry with her.
This might be a dumb question, but are they the same game, or is there actually a first and second game. I've seen people say both, so I'm a little confused. I was kind of under the impression the The Re-Up was just the definitive version of the game.

It's because game is very modular. There are bunch of first parts bunch of middle parts and bunch of endings. It's like legos. Nothing that happens in one part affect other parts, just which of those parts you can play. So it does disable ones where Mom appears as character but other than that nothing.

That's the thing that confuses me about Nicole. Everyone's always talking about how she's a sociopath who doesn't care about anything, which she...obviously doesn't. But she clearly cared when her mom collapsed?? I think that if she REALLY didn't care, she wouldn't have searched for the phone; but she did. So that makes me wonder if she still has a tiny sliver of care in her?? Cause if she really was a sociopath, she wouldn't have cared enough to call 911.

Knock down everything someone cares about, make them constantly question their worth as a human, and regularly show complete disregard for their wellbeing and safety and it's not hard for some to hit their breaking point. She was a teenager by the time he died, he lasted longer than just about anybody else in the world will ever manage.

And though she's also pretty awful as a person we know off the bat she found out her dad killed herself ad blamed it on her. also from what i've heard from other people: her emotions were normal up to a certain age. like another example was she actually was going to apologize to Ari until Ari apologized to her giving her a bit of a power trip. Yes still bad but she was even feeling a little bad about it up until the apology. She's still a very flawed person, but she has her reasons (they don't excuse her ofc but they explain things)
i very much think that she, as an unreliable narrator, also sees the player as untrustworthy in a way. shes had hundreds of "father figures" that all failed her and she moved constantly meaning that the only relationships she ever formed were superficial friendships and ones with shitty guys. she puts on the asshole front because it attracts women who will tolerate her shitty behavior and repel most men. she highlights her horrible actions (especially in the endings and the beginning sequence) and downplays her genuine ones because she sees the player as a threat to her front, as we can see every action she takes. like for example when she's telling about her father's suicide, she brushes over her emotions and instead says "im nicole by the way, what the fuck did i do to him?" to show how "tough" and "untouchable" she is. i love this game for the way it portrays its characters

Nicole is a self described sociopath. We don't know how true this is since psychologists aren't allowed to make that diagnosis on minors. However between class of 09 and the reup, we can see that at the very least Nicole's emotional range is stunted. I honestly think her complete lack of grieving for her mother is a sign she needs professional help.

she's an evil person who uses an incredibly shallow moral high-ground as an excuse to justify her own actions against others. She is in no way, no possible sense a good person. She has a complete and utter lack of a conscience, something that makes her probably the worst character in the whole damn game because she doesn't feel any remorse. She. . . honestly reminds me of myself in a few ways. Like if you scooped out any of the traits I have that would probably make up a decent person, you'd probably end up with someone like her. She really bothers me because she's all my worst traits jacked up to 11. Rude, irresponsible, idiotic, short-sighted, pushes people away, its obviously not one to one, but on the plus side, playing as her made me realize just how much better of a human I naturally am. Compared to a fictional girl in a visual novel. Huh. Guess I'm still not that great. Whatever.

Nicole is a self described sociopath. We don't know how true this is since psychologists aren't allowed to make that diagnosis on minors. However between class of 09 and the reup, we can see that at the very least Nicole's emotional range is stunted. I honestly think her complete lack of grieving for her mother is a sign she needs professional help.

According to some reddit he had a history of pulling this shit, but he plans on at least doing the anime then calling it quits.
