Kansas was something all their own. Loved them. I just love that your generation is listening and giving the music my generation listened to a chance. There are so many groups from then, unique and great I hope you enjoy and find more out there you like. So far I like what you have been reacting to, and your reactions are so genuine. Love your smiling faces and reactions to all the older music.

Late 60's to early 80s it just does not get any better and I doubt it ever will.
Listening to the very same radio station you might hear this Kansas song and then Alice Cooper the next and then the Carpenters, The Beatles, AC DC, Molly Hatchet.
It was just a never-ending mix of different creative genres most of which were outstanding!
I think of all the music from that era that is almost lost to time from this generation like Atlanta Rhythm Section, Rare Earth, The Outlaws, Brownsville Station, Pure Prairie League, Ozark Mountain Daredevils, the older J geils Band. The list just goes on and on of bands that are almost forgotten.

The song is a Kansas Masterpiece. Everything sound easy but is so complex. Even the drumming, which is my preferred instument..You would not think it is difficult but he has so many different changes that you almost need a map just to place yourself as to what comes next.

The guy with all the hair, singing the harmonies, is Robbie Steinhardt (R.I.P) who was also a classically-trained violinist. Check out his violin skills on "Dust in the Wind". "Kansas" is a very deep rabbit hole. I also recommend these songs, "Song for America", "Icarus (Borne on Wings of Steel)", "The Wall", "Point of Know Return", and "Child of Innocence".

Kansas was an American prog rock band that alluded to biblical scripture in many of their songs. "Carry On..." being one example. They were huge, hit-makers from the mid-'70s through early/mid- '80s. Great observation, reaction, and commentary.

Here's all you need to know about Kansas.... When they first started out, they were holding a lot of free shows. They heard through the grape vine that a record executive was coming to a show to scout them. All the musicians in Kansas were prodigies- For instance,, Robbie Steinhart (RIP) not only provided back up vocals to Steve Walsh but was also a classically trained violinist. Most bands who were headliners back then did not want Kansas to open for them because of the sheer level that they performed at. One band in particular (I won't mention here -I'll leave that to someone else) went to the extent in cutting the sound cables to stop Kansas from performing. Freddie Mercury /Queen once commented that the quality level of their performance sounded like it was right out of the studio. (No auto tune or pitch correction existed back then) Prog in itself is not easy to pull off yet there were so many talented bands from that era that did just that! bands like Genesis, ELP King Crimson & Yes to name a few.

Listen to John Elafante, "This is How the Story Goes." He was the lead on this song and continues to record.

Every segment of the piece is its own "hook". Quite rare in music today.

This song and Dust in the wind were on the radio so a lot of people have heard them, but their best songs most people haven't heard. Songs like, miracles out of nowhere, the wall, song for America, icarus born on wings of steel, etc. Outstanding musicians

Progressive rock, goes rockabilly to pushed time signature sped up to near-drop/skip a note, to emphasize time's end and baton's pass. Necessarily rushed. False end is actually baton passed's underway.

This song was used in a movie about Vietnam, and that's what I always think of when I hear it. About the suffering and confusion Vietnam vets have gone through since returning...

Kerry Livgren had a writers block until one night when he believes God touched him and he wrote most of this album. It's a great album. I understand why he feels that way.
