James Harden - Primetime Passer (PnR Playmaking)(MVP?)

  • James Harden. 2015 NBA Most Valuable Player Runner Up. 5x NBA All-Star. 2x All-NBA First Team. 2013 All-NBA Third Team. 2012 Sixth Man of the Year. 2x Gold Medalist for USA Basketball (2012 Olympics, 2014 World Cup). Leading the league in both scoring and assists in a season has only been done ONCE in all of NBA history. In 1972-73, Nate “Tiny” Archibald of the Kansas City Kings finished with averages of 34 points and 11.4 assists per game. James Harden almost achieved that same historic feat this year, leading the league in assists at 11.2 per game, and finishing second in scoring at 29.2 points per game (behind Russell Westbrook’s 31.7 ppg). Two things worth pointing out in favor of Harden: Westbrook has attempted close to 400 field goals more than anyone else in the league (he stands at 805-1899, good for a 42.4 field goal percentage, DeMar DeRozan has the next most FG attempts at 1530. James Harden is 655-1489, good for a 44.0 field goal percentage), AND James leads the league in win shares. Tiny Archibald’s Kings that season went 36-46, Harden and his Rockets were at 36-16 with 30 games left to play.
    The Houston Rockets were projected to win 41 games this year*. They were supposed to sneak into the postseason as a low seed (41 wins would be good enough for the 8th seed, if you think about it without the tiebreakers and the like), but there’s been nothing sneaky about these Rockets. Mike D’Antoni was coming back to the league after disappointing showings in New York and LA, with a team that could actually play the way he wanted to play. Mike wanted to move James to run the point, and create for others more. It was SUPPOSED to be easy to game plan against. Houston stands at 53-26 right now, meaning they could be anywhere from 56-26 to 53-29, if it’s the latter, that’s still 12 games better than most projected.** That’s obviously in no small part thanks to James Harden, who has played in all but 1 game this season through 79 games, averages 36.6 minutes per game, and is the center of everything that Houston does.
    If you’re still reading this, you’re about to witness a masterclass in the pick and roll. Harden is a clever and creative playmaker, and in D’Antoni’s spread system, the game looks simple, and the reads are basic, but there’s no questioning the effectiveness of the action. One of his greatest assets as a passer are his eyes, if you watch Harden closely, and most defenses do, he shifts everything in one direction, only to whip a pass with incredible pace and accuracy the opposite way. When you blitz him, his patience and poise allow him to absorb the double and wait for the right angle so he can get the pass to the right spot. When you switch, he’s going to exploit the mismatch, whether by taking his man off the dribble, or waiting until his big can bury a smaller guard inside. If you overload the strong side, he’ll drive at you and rifle a pass to the weak side. The most dangerous part? With Harden at point, it’s normally a big/rim runner, and 3 shooters out there with him, so even if you take away the first, second, and third options, the Rockets will still find a way to make you pay.
    *I would like to point out that Nylon Calculus projected them to win somewhere around 47 games, and that’s worth noting: nyloncalculus.c...
    **Bleacher Report’s featured NBA columnist actually predicted that they would finish 38-44, as the 11th best team in West. Below Denver, Dallas, and the 8th seeded Minnesota Timberwolves: bleacherreport....

    He can pass, shoot, drive, and draw fouls ... Harden is the ultimate offensive machine in the NBA!

    Harden has truly mastered the pnr to the extent that Stockton or Nash. Look at how easily he's setting up this guys. Such a talented passer too he can lay it softly right on the target or throw bullets with a casual flick of the wrist. One of the most cerebral players in the NBA love his game!

      Definitely a better passer than Westbrook and Curry. It is clear watching Harden and those other guys pass the ball that all assists are not equal.

      You damn right. People often overlook his hall of fame tier passing, he is probably one of the top 2 passers in the league with chris paul.

    3:23 that’s the smartest shit I’ve ever seen. One simple fake turnaround, and the whole space in the paint is drastically different. Unbelievable speed of decision. Totally Harden.
    Harden is simply the cleverest player in the NBA. People criticize him for taking advantages of the loopholes in the rulebook. That’s cause he’s the only one capable of finding them and actually getting around them with his technique and finesse.

    Houston was so lucky to have him. They wasted him with sub par finishers. He should have been point guard with a 6’7 shooting guard and 6’9 wings. Centers who could shoot 3s. Instead they only had one bf at a time, no substitute, no starting caliber power forward. Shooting guards playing the 3 4 and 5 smh

    • @Unconvinced1
      @Unconvinced1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Houston spent all its money on point guards to take the ball out of Hardens hands when they should have spent that money on finishers and guys who could protect the rim, shoot, catch lobs. We never went after an Ariza replacement and there was no one on the squad 6’8-6’10. That’s mvp height and houston couldn’t defend it at all

    • @Subash0069
      @Subash0069 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Dunno. But with the kind of shooter that Houston has, Westbrook would probably average 3 or 4 more assists with Houston. I mean Oladipo is the next best player on the OKC roster, OLADIPO.
      My best guess is that Houston would still win 50 games with Westbrook.

    • @RedjacketXXX
      @RedjacketXXX 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Biggus Dickus idk about the just in the fact that if u look at the tape westbrook and harden just assist completely different. westbrook assist on more easier open passes all though multiple time can make the difficult pass but harden is constantly challenged with some of the most difficult passes everyone in the NBA knws the options after a screen play is set up and with them knowing that and trying to stop the flow from happening he still gets the pass off its crazy how accurate he is

    • @nostalgicbliss5547
      @nostalgicbliss5547 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Harden just has way better vision and he is more patient in the pick and roll than Westbrook. Harden is the more talented offensive player, Westbrook the better athlete.

    • @nostalgicbliss5547
      @nostalgicbliss5547 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oladipo is definitely not the second best player on that team. Adams, Kanter and even Roberson are more important pieces than Oladipo.
      Roberson is horrible on offense, but can be a game-changer on defense. Adams is the only rim-protector they have who sets real good screens and boxes everyone out for Westbrook to wallop all those rebounds and push the pace.
      Kanter is one of the most technically gifted post scorers in the league, can rebound and has pretty good hands (He is a sieve on defense though). That team is not as bad as many want to believe. They have some talent in other aspects of the game, but not a lot of knock-down shooters.

    This doesn't really impress me. Being a Wizards fan I watch John Wall completely destroy teams with PnR. I think John is the best PnR creator in the league, even without a consistent jumper.
    The most impressive thing is how much he's improved.

    • @KaosOwners

      Daryl Morey a better passer than John Wall? No, that's false.

    • @KaosOwners
      @KaosOwners 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      i love wall's game and i think he's very underrated but i'm just not super biased (btw i am a rockets fan but for example i think westbrook is better than harden but not the mvp)

    • @EvinGualberto
      @EvinGualberto  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Dameatis Smalls Wall is definitely the better passer. There's really little to debate.
      Harden is an elite scorer who has naturally passing ability but hadn't shown it all that much because of ISO heavy the offense was organized around him before this year and people just assumed he got his assist numbers because of having the ball all the time.
      Don't worry though, I got a few Wall/Wizards' videos in the works.
