    Revving a standard bike that hard will inevitably result in issues, unfortunately. Despite being a 2-stroke the 400 is a long stroke engine that doesn’t like to be revved above 8500 RPM and as the power tends to taper off before that anyway, it’s better to change up before that sort of figure anyway.

    TZ crank bearings are roller instead of balls as the straight cut primary gears don’t cause a lot of side to side movement. Don’t think TZ pistons were forged from the factory. My 400 uses TZ 700 pistons in a English Fahron water cooled cylinder/head. Rods are similar to stock. Piston speed is important as much over 8000 is going to be a problem. I used Erv Kanemoto design chambers, bike was geared for 140mph. TZ front end, tz350 clutch, cr gears, straight cut primary, Brembo calipers, motoplat ign.

      TZ bearings are ball bearings not roller bearings. (TZ350). The big end bearings use a light weight silver plated cage which has advantages over the standard RD big end bearings.

    Late model RD400 cranks were made with suspect materials, I broke one in half as well, just pulling away from a stop at low rpm. Dont think the bearings ave anything to do wit it

      The 2-stroke engine is alive & well in snowmobiles. Check out the Rotax ETEC voice coil direct fuel injection engine that Skidoo has been using to power their snowmobiles for more than a decade.

      Why Not buy a Jawa 350 twin as they are still being made?
      That has a crankshaft that won't break but about 80mph is flat out

    I had a 1974 RD 350 many years ago and did the unthinkable and ran it out of injector oil and while passing a car doing approx. 70 at first I thought I had run out of fuel and reached over to turn it to reserve and the back wheel started to lock up . yanked the clutch in and coasted to the side of the road . I forgot to check the oil tank the night before because I got home late. lesson learned

    • @mikejohnson6369
      @mikejohnson6369 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yup I did the exact same thing on my RD400 on the freeway, the upside is that I learned how to tear down a 2 stroke and rebuild it after getting a new crankshaft. I put one of the oil seals in backwards so I had to do it all over again, lol

      Believe it or not all it did was Score the hell out of the one piston and the Bore slightly. replaced the piston got it running (not running the greatest ) and used it as a trade in on a 1979 Kawasaki KZ650 my son has a 1989 rz350 (water cooled ) which is torn down now for a rebuild. it brings me back when I ride his bike .

  • @genegeneish

    The stock bearings were good till about 8000 rpm. To beat on these bikes, you had to use the tz250 rods and bearings with forged pistons, Like in my rd400

    • @862057
      @862057  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Not sure what you mean. The RD400 is air cooled and the Banshee is water cooled. 400cc vs. 350cc. Same bore and piston but the 400 has a longer stroke. Banshee makes more power than a stock 400 motor.

    • @nomorokay
      @nomorokay 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Red or green were the 1976 US colours. In Canada our 1976 RD400s came with “Low Gloss Black” paint. Most of us waxed them until they shone. That’s the past tense of shine, intransitive, like “The Sun shone.”. Shined is the past, transitive, like “I shined my shoes.” To avoid any confusion.
