Lufeyo Phiri's treadle pump: Gifts from the Heart

  • Treadle pumps are a low-cost, human-powered way for small-scale farmers to irrigate their crops, which often greatly increases their crops' yields. This allows them to sell some of their produce and make more money to support their families.
    Lufeyo Phiri is a Zambian farmer who has benefitted from receiving a treadle pump from CLWR/Lutheran World Federation. In Lufeyo's case, the water comes from a small pond close to his fields. The pump pushes the water down a hose to water his crops, which include onions, beans, maize, and cabbage. Lufeyo credits the agricultural training he received through CLWR/LWF for his current success - he is one of the best onion producers in his area. In this video, Lufeyo is pouring water while one of his daughters operates the pump.
