I would have taken my son aside in another room, and let him know that this feels like his wife is trying to isolate him from friends & family so that she controls who he sees and who he can reach out to for help---and I'd add firmly that it didn't matter if she actually was trying to isolate him or not, it just felt that way. I would ask WHY she wants him to cut off ties with his loving and supportive family. Why would that be considered good for him? What would it gain either of them? Why does he need to be isolated from the parents who raised him, loved him, supported him? Why does she refuse to be welcomed into a family if she grew up without one, when that's a perfectly normal desire for most people? What does she desire instead? Is it what he desires, or is it something she's convinced him he desires? So many questions... And if they still cut us off? If they only contacted us to demand money, and treated us as strangers in every single other respect? I wouldn't give them any money. I would explain that as they wanted us to be strangers, well...that was their decision, and I was forced to respect it...which means it was a permanent estrangement. We are strangers. And I don't give money to strangers. I never will give money to strangers. Only to close family members...which they are not, and never will be, by their own choice. Now, if our son wanted to come back into our lives and remain family, that's perfectly fine. But we won't help out strangers, so he'll have to prove we're not strangers. ...I would also get a DNA test on the grandchild to see if it was a relative or not.

Controling daughter in-law isolating son from parents
