  • To the north of the Côte d'Azur rise the Pre-Alps of Provence. Here, at an altitude of 1,200 metres, lies La Sagne, with 20 inhabitants. Pierre Koffi Alanda came to visit the village from Togo for an internship. He returned again and again, and nine years ago he moved here. Now he grows organic vegetables in the small mountain village.

Pierre Koffi Alanda is a vegetable farmer with a passion. In his home country of Togo, the profession was not well regarded, but he was not dissuaded and now experiments with different types of fruit and vegetables. In autumn, pumpkins, courgettes and chard grow in his fields - including a Togolese variety whose seeds Pierre Koffi Alanda brought with him from Togo. He assembles the harvest into vegetable boxes and delivers them to customers in the region.

For years, many inhabitants have been leaving the mountain village and prefer to live on the coast. But some also return: Pierre Koffi's neighbour Joana Fabre moved back to La Sagne three years ago and brought her Italian boyfriend with her. They keep goats and sheep and produce cheese. Pierre Koffi Alanda, Joana Fabre and their neighbour Georges cook traditional and Togolese dishes from what grows in the garden: stuffed zucchini flowers, pumpkin ravioli with walnut sauce or gboma gnagna, for which Piere Koffi Alanda mixes African chard with a local variety. He cooks the dish on a clay grill he built himself.
