Sasun has been a historic Armenian stronghold. Sasun's strength was greatly appreciated by the Van Dynasty (858-585 BC), the Yervanduni Dynasty (570-200 BC), the Artashesian Dynasty (190 BC-12 AD), and the Arshakuni Dynasty (52-428 AD).
In 510 the Armenians of Sasun (known as Sasuntsis) under the leadership of Prince Mzhezh I Gnuni of Armenia defeated the Byzantine Army. In 851 the Sasuntsis defeated the Arabs at Mush (modern day Muş). In 852 the Arabs returned and massacred 30,000 Armenians at Sasun. In the following centuries the Sasuntsis withstood the Seljuk invasion, the Mongol invasion, Tamerlane's invasion, the Kara Koyunlu invasion, the Ak Koyunlu invasion, the Safavid invasion, and the Ottoman invasion.
In the late 19th century the Ottoman Turks tried to subjugate the long-autonomous Sasuntsis. In 1890, 1891 and 1892 the Hamidiye Turkish Cavalry Units invaded Sasun and were met with a harsh resistance. In 1893 4,000 Kurds invaded Sasun, intent on pillage. The Kurds were responsible for bringing economic ruin to the Armenian villagers: they would steal livestock and demand the Armenians to pay a second tax (that is, a separate tax in addition to the one Armenians paid to the Ottoman government). When the Armenians decided to challenge the Kurdish extortion, a fight ensued and a Kurd was killed. Using the Kurd's death as a pretext by describing that a revolt had taken place, Turkish officials endorsed a Kurdish attack against the Armenians of Sasun. The Kurds, however, were successfully driven off by the armed Armenian villagers, but that success was now seen as a possible threat by the Ottoman authorities.
In 1894 the Sasuntsi refused to pay taxes to the Ottoman government as well, unless the Ottoman authorities adequately protected them against renewed Kurdish attacks and extortions. In response the Turks sent a force of 15,000 men to disarm the Sasuntsis. After putting up a tough resistance, the Armenian militia was defeated and the Turks destroyed 40 villages and massacred 20,000 Sasuntsis. The 1894 Sasun Resistance led to the Hamidian Massacres (1894-1896). As a result of the Hamidian Massacres, of Turkey's 4,000,000 Armenians: 300,000 Armenians were killed, 550,000 were made homeless, 150,000 were forced to convert to Islam, 60,000 fled to the Russian Empire, 25,000 fled to Bulgaria, 20,000 fled to the US, and 5,000 fled to other nations. 2,500 Armenian villages were destroyed (450 were forced to convert to Islam). 650 Armenian churches were destroyed (330 were converted into mosques).
In 1902 the Armenians of Sasun tried to negotiate a truce with the Turkish government. As the negotiation was going downhill the Armenians began to organize militias in 1903. At this point the Turks blocked the roads to Sasun to prevent assistance from reaching Sasun. Sasun was soon surround by 10,000 Turkish soldiers and 7,000 Kurds. The Armenians were able to form a 1,000-man militia. The Turks began using heavy artillery on the villages and soon 20,000 Armenians were forced to flee their homes. At the end 8,000 Armenians were slaughtered and 45 villages were destroyed. The Vali (Governor) of the Bitlis Vilayet ordered the Armenian corpses to be cut into pieces and thrown into the Tigris River. Sultan Abdul Hamid II decreed that the Armenians are forbidden from returning to Sasun, but after European intervention they were allowed to return to their homes.
In 1915 the Armenians of Sasun put up another resistance against the genocidal Turkish Army. The Turks invaded Sasun with a force of 30,000 men with the intent of exterminating the Armenians. Of Sasun's 60,000 Armenians, only 15,000 survived. The 15,000 surviving Armenians of Sasun fled to Russian Armenia and settled in the villages near Talin and Ashtarak in the Aragatsotn Province.
In 1965 only 98 reported Armenian as their first language in the Sasun region. In 1972 there were an estimated 6,000 Hidden Armenians in Sasun.
Sasun is the birthplace of the great Armenian epic, the "Daredevils of Sasun." The epic describes the struggle of four generations of Sasun's warriors against Arab rule in the 8th to 10th centuries. In 1873 the great Armenian epic, the "Daredevils of Sasun" was recorded for the first time. In 1939 the Armenians celebrated the 1,000th anniversary of the great Armenian epic, the "Daredevils of Sasun." The performance of the "Daredevils of Sasun" is included in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage representative list in 2012.
