As a young and proud Filipino, it is sad to know that the culture that Igorots have protected for years against the colonizers would have to be bended down by an artist and a fellow Filipino to please the international taste buds and elite art partrons.
As an Igorot, I felt extremely uncomfortable watching the performance. The type of dance and the attire just don't go together. It became pornographic , very obscene. If she's wearing ballet attire or any other western type dress it wouldn't look pornographic. Or if she wore the Igorot attire and performed an Igorot dance, it would look appropriate. But this combination of ballet dance and Igorot attire is just purely atrocious!
I would say it's an insult, misrepresentation causing confusion and totally against the proper use of the traditional garment. It's so insincere to our culture and tradition and to our creative ninuno those who designed the attire with value. How do you feel if I just wear for example sarong that is used in a community with specific design and use it as my hanging top or anything similar to this. Don't tell me that , no one among the organizers or members notice this. This is total abuse of someone's heritage. SHout out to the higher office in charge for these shows ?
I read more about it. I was first performed 1987 in Amsterdam and was performed here in the Philippines 1988. It has been performed more than hundreds times. Kidlat Tahimik watched it last Oct 1 at the CCP. Even before it was already criticized not only locally but also by a foreign anthropologist Ness. Based on what I’ve read Locsin had emersion with the Igorots before in their communities. But after the release of the dance piece and reaction of the Igorots, there’s no record that she apologized to the community. Thats sad, National Artist pa naman sya.
It seems that it's only now that Igorots came across this performance because it happened that there was an Igorot among the audience and she took pictures and published it on her social media. I can't believe that a national artist is continued to be allowed to disrespect her country 's indigenous peoples.

As a male igorot, I also felt insulted to watch female wearing "bahag" that only must be worn by masculine igorots, according to our tradition that I learned. Igorot women must wear the "tapis" because this symbolizes feminism or Igorota. Sad to say that what the that art show is something like homosexuality.
I grew in Benguet and to compare this art of metropolitan is inappropriate. I watched a lot of cultural presentation of the Cordillerans during fiestas but I haven't seen like this. BAHAG is not meant for women but for men. Art is an art but it must follow the traditional and original concept of which it should be.

Purely from a practical perspective and setting aside cultural appropriateness for now, the wanes, I think, was necessary to enable the female dancers to execute the balletic parts of the dance. The tapis was not designed for such movements.
The artist and interpretation should adjust, not bend the culture with very specific way of using their clothes. Nabastos tuloy mga Igorot brothers and sisters natin. 1987 pa itong sayaw na ito, may video ng older performance where women dancers wore tapis but has slit for movement.

nah for me the dance did it really wrong. I didn't feel my ancestors was comming through me because the way they danced. Also the music is so contemporary that i don't see a part of Igorot in it. Tbh i would like to see real igorot women in my culture to wear a traditional bahang when they are telling a story about war or a battle against enemies throughout what Igorots been through.
