Simple Definition: This is NOT THE WHISTLE! This is the Tyfon Horn! If You want the 3-bell whistle then check here! th-cam.com/video/yjQPJQb6xMw/w-d-xo.html
To anyone who think's this isn't the only normandie horn recording, you are wrong.
Normandie had one set of Titanic-like whistles (3 bell smith hyson) which was taken off the ship after it's burning in 1942. Her whistles were used at a ceremony, and also used annually at pratt whistle blows. Her Tyfon 575 horns (queen mary-type horns) are in this video, and there is only one recording of them by the Movietone newsreel when her first voyage took place in 1936.
There is one other that I know of, th-cam.com/video/5jdrDj1sm_w/w-d-xo.html at 1:51 and 1:56
@@flewtheshoe7523 Good Find! you are really observant!
Thank you
@@flewtheshoe7523 Good finding I’ve never seen that footage of Normandie
@Josiah Rodriguez yeah it is
The sound at 33 seconds in is the true sound and true likeness of the Queen Marys whistle based on many other recordings I have heard. The air powered whistle on the QM today at long beach sounds nothing like her in service steam whistle..
Yep. This recording was made in the 1950s as part of a New York Harbor ambience recording, possibly to show off stereo recording, which was a fairly novel technology at the time!
0:33
@Arendellian Cruise Line they were never meant for air. That’s why.
I think you mean 1:04
Am I right 😶🌫️
@@mexicanofr7762 No, as I said originally 33 seconds in .
1:04 The Best whistle ❤❤❤
YES!
Someone made a video on this horn and pretend that this horn is queen Elizabeth's horn

1:04 So majestic.
With her traditional design, cozy interior, and arguably the most soothing horn I've ever heard, the Queen Mary feels like a country mom, whereas Normandie was like the grande dame. Anyone agree?
Indeed, apples to oranges I say. They are both truly wonderful ships which both possess their own unique charming qualities.
Your analogy hits the nail on the head I think, well said.
Queen Mary definitely has a more of a traditional styled exterior similar to that of liners like Mauretania and Titanic, while Normandie has a far more of a streamlined and elegant profile.
It’s just a shame Normandie never got the same chance to prove herself like the two Queens did.
I think all three are absolutely gorgeous, but I personally think Normandie is the most gorgeous of all of them.
1:04 I could fall asleep to that. Music to my ears.
👍👍
I like the horn on 1:04
Don’t think you could if you were actually on deck at the time. Would be a great alarm for the morning 😂
@@supergeorge8603 😂
@@aerofiles5044 is a fantastic sound I must say, would’ve been great back in the day. The sound on air is nothing compared to this
1:18 It's just like a painting.
Yes
That’s what a real horn sounds like. Most vehicles nowadays have seem to have motorcycle horns on them.
1:04
Yep. Regulations ruined it... the Great Lakes are the last holdout of good horns, it seems. Go look at James R. Barker or the steamers still down there, like Edward L. Ryerson and Alpena.
@@TheEmeraldMenOfficial wait. What happened in those regulations?
@@NMCAR2006 That the horns couldn’t sound notes lower than 55 hz or a very low A.
Her whistle on steam was much better and had an amazing sound
*Horn
Steam heats the workings and yields a fuller tone. On air it falls flat.
@@ExAnimoPortugalIt’s a steam whistle. Not a horn.
I found out that it's almost 35% lower pitched than it was on steam. Today it plays a G# but on steam it plays about halfway in between a C# and D.
Actually now it sounds an 'A' note when on air, as opposed to a flactuation between C# and C on steam. I have a video that might interest you on my channel.
The low pitched ‘G#’ horn was actually on the middle funnel on the original Queen Mary, now on the QM2, the front most horns on the QM1 were the ones pitched slightly south of ‘D’.
The horn at the beginning of the video is a replica of the original middle funnel horn. I don’t know where the original ‘D’ horns are. But although the ‘A’ horn on the QM2 was original, the newer ‘D’ horns on the QM2 are replicas.
@@Goetterdaemmerung86 yep, this is because of modern regulations. QM1’s horns sound at about 30 Hz, but modern regulations state that a new ship of QM2’s sizes can’t have horns below a maximum pitch of 55 Hz.
That’s why QM2 has a two-tone sound to her horns: the replica Tyfon, tuned to a higher pitch, blows first to satisfy the lawyers. Then, the one from QM1 chimes in, to steal the show *and* the hearts of the audience!
So the second horn that blasts on QM2 (the one that sounds like the ones in this vid) is actually the QM’s original? I KNEW IT!
Horns sound beautiful on steam
Agree
At 1:04 can u imagine how loud that must have been
We had class then.
@@matthewmastalerz2850 Yeah… Queen Mary’s horns could be heard for ten miles in any direction, under optimal conditions. No excuse for being late to work with her in the harbour: if that doesn’t get you out of bed in the morning, then it’s time to call an undertaker!
@@TheEmeraldMenOfficial yeah THAT IS LOUD

Idk
Whistles!
The later ones are from SS Canberra, which had the same make and model of steam horn for her voice, Tyfon 575.
thats scary ashell, imagine how many people have heard that horn and are now dead
Coincidence? I think not…
Why did I have to be born decades late? I find history interesting and the steam ships are one of them.
The Queen Mary sounded much more majestic when her horns were sounded on steam, too bad ship horns sound nothing like this nowadays.
But at least Queen Mary got preserved and is now a floating hotel.
I use headphone while watching this video..... It makes my one of my bone feels like *BREAKING*
The loudest thing in this universe is not the Black Hole but the Queen Marie's whistle
Their horns was not converted into a diesel horn from a steam horn back then because it's been like this since in 1913, 30's, 40's and 50's.

Normandie’s was probably destroyed by sitting in the salt water for a year and was thus scrapped.
Correct, there is video of it on display and demonstrated live in NYC on steam. Divers retrieved the whistle, 3-bell Smith Hyson Super Whistle, same as the Olympic class and other large liners had.

RMS Queen Mary Horn 1:04
Is there any ID
The horn is true ocean liner
Why do ships sometimes sound their horns for a long period of time? 1:04
To answer that question, in my own understanding they do that as means to alert porters and tugs that they are departing to assist them in traversing the busy port
Normandie's horn has been scrapped?.. and how did they get the 2010 horn thingy
Maybe a recreation perhaps?
Normandie had a whistle and a horn. The horn was scrapped but the whistle was preserved.
Beautiful sound with steam. QE2’s was equally impressive. For me QM2’s isn’t as impressive.
It’s not a horn, it’s a whistle. Doesn’t matter how deep it’s voice is. Same for a train.
These are horns, not whistles. They are closer in design to a giant airhorn (and work on the same principle) than a whistle.
Normandie carried both a whistle, for docking (you can find recordings online), and a horn, heard in this video.
@@TheEmeraldMenOfficial yeah
Actually I Think they Actually Blew The Normandies Horns Once or Twice I think Just Look it Up!
That's the Normandie's DOCKING WHISTLE. Normandie's TYFON HORNS are in this video.
They also blew Normandie's horn at the Pratt Institute for New Years.
@@fedora997 Normandie's WHISTLE survived after the fire, and was taken off the ship, her Tyfon 575 HORNS were destroyed or scrapped.
@@aviationbledsoe1788 the SS America, Queen Elizabeth, United States and many other liner's in that period surprisingly had the Tyfon 575's. I wish they'll restore one of the horns to fully operate on steam one day.

What....?
@@blu_e1910The Queen Mary is ugly compared to the Normandie.
@@litamtondy what makes the mighty QM ugly?
@@blu_e1910 I think the front. It is very big and not very sleek. I think the Normandie is more elegant and has a streamlined design, so by comparison the QM looks boxy. As you said, it looks more "mighty" than beautiful. But I also think the QM is way better than modern big ships.
