@@TheJoyofTrucking not covering ridiculous mountain passes in Colorado to get to Silverthorne exit to service the mines 13, 000 ft in elevation..you drive out of the tunnel it's 12, 000 ft then take the exit then start climbing up to the mine ..it's beautiful ive parked overnight at the mine area ..the elevation is ridiculous the thin air is a real thing. I woke up all nite gasping 4 air ....certain freight cannot be trucked overthat elevation.
@@jackrabbit4383 Wow! We’ve been through the tunnel. Can’t imagine heading even higher. 😳😳😳
Four years ago I drove my car down Cabbage Hill. I have seen many videos of this hill and thought no problem. It was at night and I found out that it wasn't as easy as they say it is especially when you are not familiar with that part of I-84. My nuckles were snow white by the time I finally made it all the way down.
Went over Donner this morning. 43000 lbs of Pet Food. Ol' Jake was Singin
😳😳😳👍
Kevin, if you turn your engine brake on, then set your cruise control to your desired downhill speed, the truck will regulate your engine brake for you. 👍🏼
I don’t know if it’s a company thing but cruise control won’t turn on in my FL if the jake brake is enabled. So I guess not all company trucks, even if they all freightliners do what you’re saying.
@@Sebastian81012 interesting, mine won't let me resume, but I can set and it goes into hill decent assist mode.
What year do you have....my cruise control has to be set 5 mph below desired speed to go down a grade
@@bonniegardner1154 worked on my 2018 and the 2022 i have now. Probably needs an automatic transmission
@@truckingwithj7202 Well, I also have a 2022 freightliner and it doesn’t let me turn on CC if jake break is enabled at all. It’s a company regulation thing I say aka how they asked frieghtliner to program the truck when they buy or get it for their company. So every company is different as far as regulating the trucks for what they went. Ex: some FL’s are governed at 65 while the same year FL for another company is governed at 68, etc.
Been up and down Mt. Eagle many times. It's a easy safe drive if you do want your supposed to do. Beautiful ride going up, it's my favorite side.
👍😃👍😃
Trucks are required to stop there before proceeding down Monteagle. Seen trucks get pulled over at the bottom and also seen trucks smoking their brakes down that hill.
Yes. We were surprised so many drove by! 🤔🤔🤔
@@TheJoyofTrucking those drivers obviously can afford tickets
@@truckerryan4019 😂🤣😆
A word to the wise, never lose respect for the grade
First time I went down, I downshifted and set jakes and followed the speed guidelines based on weight. Most of the drivers that past me were smoking their brakes and/or tires at the bottom and were pulled over due to tire blowouts
That's a helluva way to learn!🤦♀
😳😳😳
Did this Friday with little over 46,000 7th gear 35mph
👍👍👍
I love that pass. I go by it atleast 3x a week. If I'm empty or under 30k. I don't even use Jake's. Maybe stabbing the brakes. But once I'm at 40k in the box and heavy. I don't play around. And that inspection YOU MUST STOP. Truck drive by and I've seen cops waiting there for the ones that pass by and not stop
Thanks for sharing that info!!! Now we know where to look for you! 🥰
Loved that pass, as long as i wasnt heavy and wasnt foggy. I remember seeing a swift truck at the very top of the first runaway truck ramp. I wondered how they got it down. Lol.
😳😳😳😳
Yea they don’t actually stop you to inspect, it’s just a little like truck stop for you to check your own breaks. Some even stay doing a 10 reset.
I mean you probably already saw and noticed this by the time I’m commenting and stuff lol. And yea a lot of trucks by pass that which their not supposed to.
I pass by Monteagle all the time.
👍👍👍😃😃🤩🤩
Mt Eagle is a beautiful drive , have breaks adjusted before hand use the Jake and enjoy the ride. Love the channel!
😃😃😃👍🤩🥰
I remember coming down Mount Eagle for the very first time… in 96’ in a Cabover with zero jakebrakes 😵😵😵
😳😳😳😳😳
I drive for Crete also and have been down that mountain several times.
With 40.000 lbs in my trailer I set my cruise control at 34 mph and the jakes work automatically and keep my speed at 45 mph
It will cycle up and down as it needs to to keep 45 mph. And your supposed to have your flashers on .
Good to know!!! Thanks!!
Kevin should have hollered at the other crete truck “come on man mash the gas and get moving, we have places to be.😂😂
🤣😂😁😆😆😆
That brake check area is also designed to space out the trucks, all bypassing are putting lives in danger
🤔🤔🤔
Good job. Get in the right gear, turn on the Jake and all's good. Truck it safe guys 😎
Kevin likes to do it himself. 🙃😉
I remember 1995 my first year driving I drove for JB Hunt I had one of those old flat top cabovers International. With no jake brakes. All I had was the foot break not even a trolley valve. There was some interesting ride going down at Mount Eagle. I remember I had about a half a mile left to go down I had to let the truck go. I started seeing White smoke coming out from the tires. I remember one of my trainers at that time told me to keep it at below 1500 RPMs
😳😳😳😳😳 Glad you were ok! Did you start singing the Johnny Cash song?
Such a lovely drive, and expertly handled by Kevin. It's wonderful to have you two over here in the eastern U.S. May you have continued safe travels! ♡
Thanks! You too!!! It’s greeeeeeeen!! 😃
Outstanding demonstration. My eyes were glued to Brother Kevin's jake controller the whole way down. Empty on the pretty pavement is one thing. Loaded when wet? Let's go!! I can't wait! As always, travel safely...
👍😁🤣😂😆😃🤩🤩🤩
Since I go up and down the Ortega Highway every day, that is always interesting. Usually because of traffic speed is naturally controlled. We do get a couple of motorcycles fly off the side or cannot break in the canyon with bad results. I would say steepest for me is Pikes Peak. I have not traveled Donner yet.
Donner is a blast
We did Pikes Peak by car. Very scary! Especially when we hit ice in the curb on the way down. Too many places with no rails and steep drops. No statistics on the internet about how many cars fly off?!?! 🤔🤔🤔
Wow Jake Brake belongs on American Idol
Lol!!!!! A clear winner!!
Great job Kevin. And a great job videoing Tanja. Safe travels to you both.
😁😁😁👍🥰
Godspeed driver
Appreciate that!! 🥰
Jack Daniels also there
Yup! But don’t drink and drive ;-))
Just getting started in trucking. I'm getting a late start as I'm 55 years young. Enjoy your videos as I can relate to the matured mindset. Can't wait to get started and hope it goes as well as y'all have made ot look. Keep the videos coming thanks
Never to late for trucking, enjoy life an be safe out there!
Glad you’ve enjoyed sharing our journey and getting started in your own trucking journey! Kevin got his CDL at age 59. So no worries…you’re young!! It’s the perfect time!! Keep us informed how things progress and we’ll keep the videos coming. It’s a deal!!
@@TheJoyofTruckinggot us? Do you have a CDL?
@@AutismusPrime69 Nope. But I do have good grammar. So it was supposed to say ‘his CDL’. I wouldn’t say ‘got us CDL.’ 😁
That ain’t to bad try running the back road down mount eagle lol or wolf creek pass
😮😮😮
Good job Kevin. One question. Since you were empty why not set your cruise for 5 mph below and let them do the work? Have a good day tomorrow and stay safe.
He likes to ‘be in control.’ 🙃😉
I was there last week and I was at 77.5k and it was my first time. I didn’t know if to keep it in auto or switch it to manual mode. Good ole rookie year for me.
Good for you!! Rookie year will be over before you know it!! Either one is fine. Kevin likes to go manual, controlling the speed. Lots of viewers wrote that they put it in auto and go. So it's up to you. What did you decide on?
@@TheJoyofTrucking I did it on auto but just a scary moment when it would shift between gears as it going down the mountain. In manual transmission they always told us to use a lower gear before going down the mountain and not to shift otherwise you might not get it in gear.
Good point. Glad you made it. It will get easier every time. Or less stressful anyway. 😃👍
Yes many times an the grape vine in calf is a lot harder to get down an so is 75 going south
The grapevine really isn't that bad, the problem there is if there is traffic. The hill isn't really that bad. Trying to creep down at 3 mph in traffic sucks!
🤔🤩👍
I've been behind trucks overheated their brakes a time or two on Donner Pass - but the worst downgrade I remember is Oregon 140 down in the southeast of Oregon. Westbound the road goes up a long gentle grade straight as an arrow - and then curves to the right. IIRC the spot is called Abert Rim. After the curve the road is a narrow 2 lane snake mostly carved from the face of a cliff - and 8% downgrade. Left side is open air, the right mostly rock cuts.
Last time I came that way I found a guy in a 1970s pickup - with about a 20 foot travel trailer -solidly planted in the last halfway reasonable piece of ditch maybe half a mile off the rim. I stop to make sure he's okay. He's fine; just thoroughly stuck ... and asks if I can pull him out. I take a look... 1. I really don't think my Dodge Dakota and anything we have for chains and rope are gonna move him an inch. 2. If somehow he got out that leaves him with 3 1/2 miles of downgrade his vehicle clearly can't handle. 3. He's in the last spot it's plausible to put a runaway vehicle for a safe stop. Beyond there it's pretty much put it into a rock wall.
I left him sitting safely in the ditch. I still wonder how a wrecker got him out and safely down that hill.
Wow!!!! Good decision on your part!!! Haven’t driven there yet. We’ll make a mental note…
Was in your last video...you got a mty from frito lay...don't know your whole process..but from experience..always. always check your mty before hooking to it..may be full of trash or two flat tires...save you the time before you hook to it
Yes! Good advice!! Thank you!! Or a T-1. Lol!!
Nice video!
Thanks!! Glad you enjoyed it!!!
Have you tried setting the cruise about 6 mph (depends on grade and load of course) below the speed you want to maintain and letting the truck do all the work instead of manually engaging and disengaging the engine brake? I can tell you it works pretty well! Don’t mean to poop on your parade, but while those types of Jakes do the job well, they are no where as impressive as the truck with the straight exhaust pipes.
👍😃😃😃
Was the driver using the cruise control and engine brake at the same time?
Kevin was manually controlling the Jake Brake.
Hi Kevin heading to California this kenwort is different
👍😃😃What did you drive before?
@@TheJoyofTrucking a freightliner
@@TheJoyofTrucking heading back to Evansville IL good miles so far where are you
@@billsargent8290 Kevin spent his reset in McPherson, KS on the way to Cheyenne. I’m actually off the truck right now working on videos! Glad your miles are good and that you’re having a good experience with Crete!!
What am I missing? The "brake check" turnoff doesn't seem like much of a brake check.
I assume that all the drivers have used (tested) their brakes a hundred times today already.
I guess that checking them the hundred and first time is the key.
One thing it does seem to do is to cluster lots of trucks together so if there is a brake failure, the driver doesn't have to suffer alone.
You said monteagle pass is the most dangerous pass?? Try Loveland pass or vail pass in Colorado. That is just a hill to me. Rookie stuff
Lol!! It’s considered a dangerous road. We didn’t say ‘most’ dangerous. I agree completely that it feels pretty tame after some of the ones we’ve done out West. Coming down from the Eisenhower tunnel always makes me (Tanja) nervous. And Arizona had given Kevin some good incline experience right away.

Thanks for the reply. I do envy you cause you two are able to see the country. I drive from grand junction Colorado to Denver five days a week over the Rockies to get haul fuel. It’s pretty but same scenery for twenty years now. So keep up the great videos thanks again

@@jackrabbit4383 Sorry. I don’t understand your comment. What do you mean?

What type of gps are u using the
Garmin DEZL OTR800, Garmin DezlCam710, Truckers Path on the phone, and Co-pilot on the ELD. 😃
45k is a downhill challenge. You would be not passing anyone.
👍👍👍
your truck doesnt have a jake brake it has a engine brake
Kevin uses a Jake Brake and the automated truck adds the engine braking by selecting a lower gear in the transmission.
From Wikipedia: “A compression release engine brake, compression brake, or decompression brake, frequently called a Jacobs brake or Jake Brake, is an engine braking mechanism installed on some diesel engines. When activated, it opens exhaust valves to the cylinders, right before the compression stroke ends, releasing the compressed gas trapped in the cylinders, and slowing the vehicle.”
A little too much YT drama here it's a 6% grade after all. Was dangerous in days before Jakes but drivers could drive then...today they cant.
It’s more dangerous than the prairies…😁🤣😆😁😂😉
Lady, That is not A Jake Break !!!!! Engine Brake
🤔🤔🤔Seems to us the two expressions are used interchangeably. Jake Brake derived from a particular company. Like saying Kleenex or Clorox for generic versions.
No not really . a good jake brake can and will shut your motor down in not careful. I did just realize that Kevin drives an Automatic .

Congratulations on your decision! Kevin started with Werner Enterprises. On our channel, you'll find lots of videos about them and his experience with them. We are happy with his decision to start with Werner, but you'll need to decide which company works best for your priorities. Best of luck! Let us know.

Schneider is good to start with. They will help you get your CDL. Steven's is another. You will over all types of terrain, and go coast to coast. It is good experience
Go to prime day tech you to get a cdl. Also afther that you got to do tnt training Day got good truck.
If you want to go flatbed and make $70-80k your first year, Maverick Transportation is an EXCELLENT company to start with. They have their own driving school as well! Their glass division goes to all 48 states and Canada and you'll probably make close to 90k by the end of your 2nd year. Their "regular" flatbed division runs regional and home every weekend. If not flatbed then, Swift (yes that Swift lol) is actually a good company to start with despite all the jokes.
That's not how you check your brakes before going down a steep incline.
Ha ha ha that ain't even a good hill I know Johnny Cash wrote a song about it but those were different days an different trucks. Kings mountain down road is worse
Where is that one?
@@TheJoyofTrucking I stand corrected I was thinking of black mountain I 40 near Asheville its a twisty turning downhill slide
You should be able to run monteagle ( notice the spelling ) down on east side full Jake's loaded without hardly touching your brakes
