One time several years ago, I was playing intermediate mode with my family watching me. I started a new game, and clicked on a completely random square and it was an 8. After watching this video, I am realizing how unbelievably lucky I was during that game.
@@All-star_Giga_Gargantuar well technically, if you don't get a pool, you still have to click at random spot (random as in there's no guarantee), so getting 8 is actually better than getting 1
That's an interesting question - what's the chance of not only getting an 8, but getting it on the first click. Given the 8*8, the chance of that is somewhere at a in 180 million. Which is approximately the same chance as getting Red in roulette 27 times in a row. Which is crazy unlikely! And then again, there is a world record in roulette - 32 times in a row, happened once in the 40s. Chances of first click 8 in Intermediate and Expert are actualy much higher: 1in 8M and 1 in 600K. I woudl assume there can be 600.000 expert minesweeper games being played in the world every day - meaning people uncover 8 with first click all over the world probably on a daily basis, we just dont know about it... And maybe once a year - first cick 8 in the beginner! Crazy, huh!
Knowing my luck, I would uncover the ring of mines, think to myself “oh boy time to click in the middle and reveal an 8” and have that also be a mine 😂
I kinda feel the same way. One thing that can somewhat explain it is that 2.7% is the chance that *a board had* 7 - not necessarily that player saw it. For example, maybe it was one of those games where you had 50/50 half the way in and guessed wrong. Or maybe one of those where opening won't open and you just clicked on the mine in the very beginning. Maybe 7 was there on the board, but will be forever left hidden under one of the tiles. So if, say, you'd on average open half the board, the chance of *seeing* 7 would be proportionate to that - 1.3%, not 2.7%. In reality it maybe even smaller, depending on the average board open rate. Same applies to all probabilities here.
@@GamesComputersPlay in reality, I think if you opened half of the board in a game that contained 7, your chance of seeing it is probably actually much less than 1/2. To see a 7, you, by definition, need to click on a square that is only connected to one open square, and that's usually one of the last things you do.
1. I couldn't come up with a way to calculate it, so only simulation. 2. There is, no need ot change the numbe of mines. For example 2 mines in top row, 8 in second (Beginner). I calulcated the chances in one of the comments - don't remember the number but it is quite rare, as you can imagine.

I’m afraid the maths at 3:46 is a bit off. Mines don’t arrange themselves randomly across the board. In particular, they don’t form “islands”, the denominator in that fraction includes arrangements which have all the mines grouped in one corner or which include a 3x3 mine cluster
I am not 100% sure this is so. But I think you maybe right, as modernMInesweepers limit minimal number of clicks needed to solve the board. And a board with 8 has very low clicks - and probably wouldn't be allowed.
