Good explanation. It's taken me years to understand the tuning and theory behind this great instrument. Like most I used the Winnie Winston book and what I could find for information. The teaching materials were limited 40 years ago. I made big charts on poster boards and worked out the pedal combinations. Because of the variety of players copedent some printed material was confusing. Jeff Newman had the most solid and direct teaching methods and I attended his seminars and bought his courses. A big boost to the pedal steel guitar industry. Much more is available now. This video is a treasure to the new student. Thanks for sharing.

You're welcome. It does sink in after a while and start to make sense.

I remembered Swedish master steel player Janne Lindgren being asked if it wasn't extremely difficult to play the pedal steel. He answered with a little smile, no, it's more expensive than difficult. Easy for him to say! Both hands and feet and knees and not at least all of the brain.

It’s both expensive and difficult for sure. I tell folks to get the best rig they can afford at the time and you can always upgrade over time. As for learning, I’m not sure it’s much more difficult than any other instrument, but there are certainly a lot of pieces to put together.

Very helpful, I would like to learn more how to use the 1st, 7th, 2nd, and 9th strings. I figured out the 7&9 and 1&2 with 2 lowered a half can substitute for a 4 chord from the pedals down position without moving the bar.

Great book. I think every steel player has learned out if that book at one time or another.

You can find it pretty easy. Almost all the notes are on the pedals down position.

That’s probably the most recognizable song most people know with a flat 5.

Flat 5 would be the pentatonic minor.

Is that the official label for the flat 5?
I know a minor pentatonic scale has a flat 3 and a flat 7, but it would make sense if the note itself was labeled the pentatonic minor tone.

If I could give you some advice it would be if you're going to play a passage and teach it play the passage first. So everybody knows what you're doing in the contents of what you're teaching. Then go about showing everybody how you do it. I hate it when somebody breaks something down and I don't even know what they're trying to play..

Fair, but usually I play the part from the recording before I do it. This video isn’t even about a song.

I'm not talking about songs I'm talking about licks.. I am a steel guitar player and I play other instruments also and I teach. I play the lick first and then show you how to play It.. Nothing to do with songs@@steelymike9995
