Master Class with Grace Bumbry

- Grace Bumbry (CFA'55), an internationally known opera singer and a leading vocal teacher, instructs singers from the Boston University graduate voice degree programs and the Opera Institute during a master class at the College of Fine Arts (CFA). Bumbry was in residence at BU's School of Music for several days and also gave a lecture as part of the Friends of the Libraries of Boston University lecture series.

The first tenor has been for me unforgettable. I wish that I could locate him and his work now ten years later.
His name is Martin Bakari and he still sings!

That first tenor has an absolutely gorgeous instrument, and his presentation is so honest. I really hope he's still pursuing this stuff.

I wonder if all the instruction Grace gave to the second tenor soloist helped him. It takes a lot of guts to put your instrument on public display only to have so much of it corrected in the way she did. It must have been difficult enough, but with millions watching online it was brutal.

I think by now I've watched hundreds of various musical masterclasses, and this is easily the best---not only because her instruction is precise yet also insightful and helpful, but because she has such great wit! Brava! This is a joy!
I would like to hear Bumbry's Salome. I have a record with her singing Amneris in Aida with Birgit Nilson and Franco Corelli.

Astonishing. Actually, she doesn't say anything helpful at all or at least nothing every common vocal coach could tell the students. Most of the time I had the feeling she just doesn't know what to say. I relly hope the students did not pay for that "masterclass". Not every good singer becomes a good teacher.
I happen to disagree with you. These are all students who had spent several years with very competent voice coaches. Perhaps, it is true that some students had flaws that should have been eliminated earlier. However, her emphasis on using the correct vowel sounds to get the desired musical effect is something some professionals could have benefitted from learning. She also has a very keen feel for the shape of the arias, providing excellent advice, not just on basic phrasing, but also how to achieve climax and release, as well as how to ensure the singer is not struggling when reaching key notes. I think you are deciding these points are obvious because they are simple and clearly correct once pointed out. That does not mean they were obvious to "every common vocal coach".
