Thanks for sharing my bass transcription alongside your fantastic analysis of Donny's incredible bass playing. I'd bet that Donny also scored the strings, as he did a lot of his own orchestrations...
Christmas present of the year😎 The arrangement reminds me a lot of J S Bach's inventions. Especially clear when you play the lines on piano. A lot of counterpoint going on there. Bach was the original funkateer. And finally a well deserved break for the bass player. 'tis the time to get merry. Watched the extended version on Nebula, of course. ✌✌
Very nice! Thanks 😊🙏🏻 Thinking closely I think in the the starting chords there is a modal Interchange putted in some chords of a circle of fifth that, without It, it would be boring. 🤔
''...maintaining a wrist aligned with the forearm is important for control, relaxation, and injury prevention, but it should be balanced with flexibility to allow for natural movement. A relaxed and aligned wrist is the foundation of good piano technique.'' But the left hand moves back and forth encouraging the wrist to turn out of alignment with the arm.

I love the way you deconstruct this song and teach us the value of this composition.
Merry Christmas!
Whoah I been listening to this all week for the first time
I was listening to this on repeat the last 3 days. RIP Donny.
Thanks for turning me onto this! I'll definitely be checking out Josh Fossgreen's video to try and learn it on bass
Man, your voice shines in that range -- do more of that !!
And of course, total respect to Donny Hathaway
The thing that always gets me with this song is the FMaj7 to B7 to BbMaj7. That unexpected lift with the B7 chord is an incredible effect.
Absolutely. And it’s really just the tri-tone substitute for the V7 of IV. Not even that fancy but it just oozes with feeling in that context.
I could listen to your decodes for hours❤❤❤🎉🥳🎵

I was meaning to transcribe this. Now you've done all the work! Thanks for the Christmas treat!
Donny was amazing and way ahead of his time. He is missed. Thank you for explaining with your "spider fingers". LOL!
I'm quit sure that Db in the intro is actually a BbMaj7. Also, the Chorusending with B half Dim7 raises to a B7 flat 5.
Yeah. The Db is a Bb

wow Aimeeeeeeeeee!!!!
Thumbs 👍 very interesting
I forget it every year lol!!
Are you sure that’s a Rhodes and not a Wurlitzer?
That is a good line. Best hidden jem bassline is "One More Try", George Michael.
One of my faves. Good call
