Hey- Folks have been searching for a short cut to weight loss forever! I remember back in early 80s a work friend ate Nothing but these Weight Loss Cookies that she bought at the health food store! She ate nothibf for breakfast - a magic cookie 🍪 for lunch & another fir dinner!! Did she loose weight- oh yes ahe did- & then she ended up at The ER passed out - she had severe Potassium deficiency! I see something like the cookies still with the Energy Bars at the stores. What works for me is eat whole foods and keep moving.

To each one's own. I won't try IF as I don't feel well when I skip meals, and I fear screwing up my metabolism if I go back to 3 meals/day. Many applaud it. If I were to improve my eating, it is to eat real, unprocessed foods, no sugar, healthy balance. Simple. That's it. No diets, no gimmicks, no crazy making.

Whole fresh foods, with little to no processed items just makes sense. That's the way people always ate before they started coming out with 900 kinds of junk food, because "snacking" wasn't even a thing. If you had said to me when I was a kid in the 50's, "What do you snack on?" I would have stared at you, unable to understand what you meant. We had three meals a day. Period. You had one plate of food each meal, and you either ate it all or you didn't. If you didn't, and got hungry later, you simply waited until the next meal. Your mother might say, "Don't eat that, dinner will be ready soon." So you put the apple back. We had a limited selection of things, and items like cookies were for dessert only. All sweets were for dessert. You never ate ice cream in the middle of the day. At least that was my experience, and the way prices are going, we may be back to that way of eating soon.

We metabolize our food much slower and need less as we age. A balanced diet for the day is best for our health. I have recently lost 20 lbs, and would like to lose 20 lbs more, but I am not doing any fads diets. My best advice came from my nutritionist "Listen to your body, Eat when you have hunger pains and Eat balanced."

And eat SLOWLY. Chew our food more. Our digestion starts in our mouths. Rating slowly helps our brain keep up with filling up our stomachs. People who eat fast don’t feel full till suddenly they feel like their bellies will explode. We should be eating to satiety not fullness.

I have done IF for a few years now - I do a 16:8 for the most part. I agree there is some misunderstandings about being able to eat 'whatever you want' during an eating window. It's not really true. If you can track AND fast, I think that's the best way to go. This allows the body to address the excessive glucose and fat storage during the fasting period.

Ok. Lot of info. I don’t diet. I’m a solid 200 pounds. No diabetes, HBP, or heart issues. Don’t care about cholesterol. My husband almost died taking a statin drug, so those are out. I’m active for being 67. Have a business, garden, house cleaning, etc. I don’t eat after 7pm, I don’t eat first thing in the morning. We have steel cut oats almost every morning at about 10am. We eat again between 4 and 5. I’ve been the same weight for 20 years. I don’t gain or lose. I’m ok with what I weight. I eat what I want.

I agree about the cholesterol. I have been reading some information that says elevated cholesterol is not detrimental to cardiovascular health and may even be protective against some diseases like dementia. I have heard many horror stories about those statin drugs. I think eating a heart healthy diet is key and trying to naturally keep triglycerides low and raise HDL levels. Exercise goes a long way to help too.

I lost 25 pounds in three months and it was the only way I was able to lose the weight. I stopped after I got to my goal weight and now I just eat 3 small meals a day and still limit grains (especially wheat) and sugar. I am 65 years old.

I think there are too many diet gimmicks out there. Trust me, I've probably did them all. Whether you decide on keto, plant based, clean eating, the one common denominator is STOP eating processed foods and drinks. Tracking food definitely helps, I use nooms free ap. I had started eating junk a while back, and just getting back to eating whole foods and the weight is coming off. I lost 70 but still need to lose 60 by years end. Hopefully we will both reach our goals.
Again, please ignore all these magic bullet ideas. Eat whole foods, use wholesome ingredients if you bake, and include veggies (including potatoes, which get a bad rap). Stop eating 2 hours before you go to bed and drink lots of water, green tea, and can have a cup of coffee daily if you like. Keep on doing what you know our grandparents did. You got this. You look great and you are feeling better, so that is a win. Relax and enjoy your food, but definitely keep tracking and weighing yourself. You will see the patterns and know what works for you. Sorry, so long winded.😊

Think about the focus. By intermittent fasting I suspect any overeater will focus on the eating window. If we admit to ourselves that we are compulsive overeaters, I suspect it's easier to get on a healthier path, and the weight loss will follow. I lost 30 lbs. By simply cutting my portions in half. Start eating LESS and your stomach will shrink. It happens! Takes a while, but you will stop overeating and the weight will drop off.

One thing about trying to lose weight, what works for one person won't necessarily work for another. I like IF because it limits my blood glucose spikes. Not eating after 5 pm also helps me sleep better because I have Gerd. I do not just IF alone. I also eat a lower carb diet. By lower carb I mean I cut out processed carbs like most things white and sugar, but I do eat veggies and some fruits. I have also incorporated walking into my plan. I think I have hit on the magic solution for me. My weight is starting to go down at a pretty steady rate and I am having to purchase new clothes. Each person needs to try to find a combination of methods that work well for them and stick to it. Ignore anyone that says it won't work. Because it just might work for you.

Interesting. Thanks for sharing. I try not to eat In the evening or at night if possible. My breakfast is one low sugar Greek yogurt with some berries and Coffee. Then I have an early lunch Around 11 with carbs. Then I either have a high protein snack around 3 and eat a salad or a high vegetable dinner around 6. Or if I have to be somewhere in the evening I skip the snack and eat a big dinner at 4 and then a small salad when I get back in the evening. I find I do better if I don't create rules for myself. Just do what makes me feel best, and I continue to gain muscle tone and burn fat so I know it's working for me. Typically it works out to be Is anywhere from a 12 to 14 hour fast. I'm usually really hungry by the time I eat. Some days I count calories in my mind so I know how much to eat at dinner. My goal is to get down another clothing size by Winter time.

My hubby works second shift and so he leaves around 3:30pm. I won’t eat (9 out of 10 times) after 4 pm. And I feel a little peckish before bed, I’ll have a spoonful of natural peanut butter. It satiates me thru the night and I’m only adding like 50 calories. Now, yesterday we were out bowling with friends and we all got pizza. I don’t generally eat pizza but I had ONE slice. That isn’t going to ruin my weight loss goal.

Being a data geek, I weigh myself several times a week and record my weight in my phone's Health app. I think it helps to have the graph available at all times.

Intermittent fasting doesn’t mean gorging on unhealthy foods during your eating window, and then not eating for several hours. I think it’s best to eat healthy during the eating window, such as fruits and vegetables, and eating protein as well. Cutting out sugar, not too many carbs, and doing some kind of exercise. I mostly do steps indoors. I think it’s important to understand the difference between the fruits and vegetables you eat and what is in them. Some vegetables can be very starchy, meaning more carbs. And carbs like bread, flour, etc., turn into glucose (sugar) in your body, so that is why it’s good to limit that. When you are fasting, your body burns it’s own fat. I find that intermittent fasting combined with sensible eating, and walking works for me. And I do track what I eat. I’ve lost 15 lbs in 2 months so far. I have a way to go, but I also realize it’s the steady progress that is meaningful. And being older, I know my metabolism is not like it was when I was much younger. But everyone has to do what works for them! But never give up!!

Just as personal finance is personal, so is what works for each of us to lose/maintain weight. For me, intermittent fasting was a God send. I had been morbidly obese most of my adult life. Had gastric bypass in 2002, but gained most of the weight back. I started IF in 2017 at 222 pounds (I'm 5'0 tall). I started by doing 16:8. I slowly took off 20 pounds over about 3 months. Then I started doing 36 hour fasts twice a week and 16:8 the rest of the week. Within a year I was down 75 pounds. I did not track my food. I ate what I wanted. I did find that I craved far less sugar than before (trust me, I still enjoyed sugar in my eating window if I wanted it!). I kept the weight off until late 2019 when I had the crazy idea to try to make my motherhood dream come true. I ended up having 2 babies at over 50 years old. My net weigh gain from the 2 pregnancies was 30 pounds... I hated that 30 pounds but was still awfully happy that I ONLY put on 30 pounds (was around 165) instead of getting back into the 200s. It took me a year to get back on track but now I'm down to around 130. My weight goes up when I eat carbs... but I still do. IF has helped me manage the large swings in weight. Nothing else worked for me. To each their own!

IF is meant to give your body a break, and allow it to feast on your reserved fat sources. That's why many experience loss in the mid section and waist ( the visceral fat). During my eating window, I feed my body healthy fats and protein, to keep my body healthy. I do have little bit of carbs like bread, potatoes, rice or pasta, but I refrigerate them a day before as it helps them to become more of a resistive starch, which is better for you. Eating all kinds of garbage during your eating window makes no sense. Why would you want to do that. IF has worked great for me, and not just in weight loss, but in inches and overall energy and well feeling.

It's always important to eat a balance diet, no such thing as you can eat as much as you want - you can eat whatever you want but not as much as you want.
I think most people know that they can't eat 2 pizzas, 4 chocolate bars, and soda, every day during the times of eating (when intermittent fasting), and not expect to gain weight.
I think intermittent fasting is most helpful for people who do evening eating without thinking.
If people were to cut out evening eating they would probably lose lots of weight.

I am doing it to keep bllod sugar levels stable, reduce uric acid and reduce liver fat.
Weekdays, when I work I eat brakfast before 7 am and dinner around 6 pm. Sat and Sunday, only one meal.
I have not felt hungry or faint even tho blood sugar levels drop to 60 or 50 inthe afternoon.
But one still have to limit calories, etc....
Even with bariatric surgery, if you go back to eating all that you want, you will put weight back on.

I tried many plans; the latest being intuitive eating and not cutting out any food group. Hardly lost anything or I gained it back. The truth is if we have alot of weight to lose; we need to "deprive" ourselves moderately until we lose the biggest bulk. Now, I cut out most oils and butter (except olive oil), focus on complex carbs and cut out store bought salty snacks and chips bc that's my weakness and the cause of my extra weight not sweets. I do eat weat, bread, sweets but very rarely. It's working well. My belly fat is going down. I also drink lots of water and eat vegis (aka fiber) at every meal. I try to eat fiber at the beginning of the meal and wait a little bit. It fills up the stomach so we consume less.

In my opinion i believe the W.W. diet plan to be the best. you can have your treats. Your family can also eat what you do, it is a matter of choice. most people want the tacky food but you soon loose the taste for it. That is where you all go wrong. You are heading the right way with calarie count. All the best but dont starve yourself. It is not right to leave big spaces in your gut and the fill it up quickly. Eat between 7AM-7PM

The only way intermittent fasting works is if you combine that with tracking what you're eating.. intermittent fasting gives your liver a chance to process food so for instance if you have pizza on Monday and eat very little food and only eat that through an intermittent phase by Wednesday or Thursday your liver would have processed that pizza

  • @Saturn57

Cutting calories is the only way to lose weight.
Keto diet will shorten your life because you're organs and brain run on glucose and not fat.
Also fasting doesn't work because you're body goes into starvation mode and anything you eat will be stored as fat, you're body will be fighting you to keep the fat.
What works for me is Cutting calories to around 1200 to 1400 and after 2 weeks eat maintenance calories.
Maintenance calories is eating exactly the amount of calories to maintain you're current weight for me its 1900 to 2000 calories.
After a week or 2 I go back on the Cutting calories another 2 weeks.
Also you can zig zag you're calories to prevent your body from plateau.

As far as intermittent fasting goes, of course a person would have to also watch what types of food they eat during their eating times. What would make a person who is trying to lose weight think that they could eat whatever types of food they want during their eating times and still lose weight? That doesn't even make sense except for a very few people who might be able to get away with that, but not for the majority of people.

I think some folks think intermittent fasting is going 24-48 hours without food. My idea of intermittent fasting is not eating after 4 or 5 pm and then not eating till 9 or 10 am. That’s very doable and I feel great. I go to bed at 10, and I make sure my 4 pm meal is protein packed and I never feel hungry before bed 😊
I follow this one couple who did more intense intermittent fasting and they only eat from 2-4 pm. 😮. I can’t do that. Because I can’t get all my calories in , in a 2 hour window. I did best Dawn, when I was working 40-60 hours a week I was constantly snacking. And by snacking I mean, nuts, seeds, raw veggies, protein shakes. Healthy stuff. No sugar , no snacking on candy bars and “protein bars” which are full of sugar.

Intermittent fasting does not mean you eat whatever you want throughout the time period. You should eat two meals and no snacking. Be aware of carbs and calories. I have been doing this since February and have lost significant weight. It takes time to adjust to a two meal a day or even go to one meal if you aren't hungry. I do a keto type diet with intermittent fasting and it works well for me. Yes I gave up some of my favorite foods to be successful but now I don't miss them.

For intermittent fasting to work, you should have no longer than a eight hour window to eat. But you should NEVER EVER EVER give yourself permission to eat junk foods. If you eat more healthy stuff that is raw, or healthy, then you can eat til you are full and lose weight. If you can't, then you may have a health issue that is causing the slow to no loss. Intermittent fasting is not for the weak. You have to be super dedicated. If you are nilly willy and let your hunger guide your heart, you won't do well on this. You have to follow the schedule to lose. But you don't need chocolate, cookies, fatty foods, and a bag of chips. I would eat 2 regular meals and one or two tiny snacks. It helps those who have a bad gut (digestion). That cured my bad digestion. I stick to it still, but not as strictly. I still have the health benefits, but I could stand to be stricter to use more pounds.

Good morning Dawn, I do not think intermittent fasting will work for me either! It sounds crazy to start off with. Stick to a healthy meal plan, do not nibble in-between meals, it is a killer, and do not eat anything after 7 pm!!. Small portions is excellent, just getting use to the size of your plate. Use a bread plate, then the food does not float around a dinner plate. Also, make it a fresh juice day, it all sounds great, but, watch your health condition, your age and other factors. We can do more harm than just losing weight for the sake of looking good. Exercise and walking helps for the blood circulation that's why going on holiday works so well, that walking on the beach. We are actually more active and out in the fresh air and sunshine. Just try to eat healthy and we are half way there. What also works very well, is get a hold of a diabetic diet, they are not allowed any sugar or too much carbohydrates. If you eat rice, no potato. Steamed food is great, I try to create a steam cooking effect on the stove, it does help. You know what, cut the chase, live happily every day, eat less and just tell yourself I do not need that cream doughnut as delicious as it may be. Take care.

My range of motion and eyesight have improved, chronic foot pain has disappeared and people have been commenting that my skin looks nice. Now that its easier for me to move, I have been exercising consistently and I'm growing stronger. I will need to combine intermittent fasting with something else.
