About Spectre Sound Studios:
I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.
Thanks for checking out my channel & please subscribe!
My vacuum cleaner broke. I put a "Line 6" sticker on it, and it started sucking again.
👍😂👍
Ha ha ha !
Lol!
Omg. Hahahaha
@Colm Coss Absolutely.
"Audio blur" is now officially my go-to name for reverb. 😅
Same
Next band name
there's gonna be a half dozen boutique reverb pedals called audio blur by the end of the month
I kind of like it, sounds cool.
There is however an actual reverb/impulse that could function as kind of a blur, which I find kind of cool
We should talk fender into renaming the “Deluxe Reverb” to “Deluxe Audio Blur”.
Brilliant 🤣🤣🤣
I'm with it. 😆
Audio Blur goes Bzzzzzzz
Leave my Deluxe Reverb ALONE!!!
"Twin Audio Blur"
YES!! They are back! The best video content out there! Love these videos!
Hilarious videos!!
Haha, you are everywhere! 🤩😍
@@TheLebno haha thanks!
@@iwantappledumplings6187 agreed!!
Yes. Just wish we did not have to wait so long for the next episode!
"Hello, we're Audioblur!! We do covers of Britpop band Blur, & Audioslave!!!"
Have a tune stuck in your head and want it gone? For $9.99 per pill, we at Audioblur will guarantee that even the most daunting earworm will fade into a blur.
Not gonna lie, I would go see that band
@@coleanderson4951 Actually not a bad name if you don't really think about it
Like a Song #2. Cochise and TV.
JUST. PRESS. PLAY.
RE: music theory. Even if you don’t know you’re using it, you’re still using it. Kind of like when people (such as myself) use/misuse words they don’t really understand, but it sounds right to them.
The book didn’t stop getting written when all the classic composers died, and that seems to be a common misconception. Music theory is not a play by play of how to compose like Beethoven. It’s centuries of experience poured into an ever evolving road map. A road map that includes every alternate route you could possibly imagine.
Exactly.
That Deathcore Kid is so Chuunibyou, I was laughing my ass off.
He probably wears a black cape, wraps his right arm with bandages, has a lot of unnecessary belt buckles attached to both his jacket and pants, an eyepatch to seal in his power, and probably refers to himself as The Dark Flame Master or something.
lmao
Oh he's flaming alright lol
I liked the quoting of a thy art is murder part being about a third of his text. Too.
It's all to impress his lady with the Wicked Eye and combat umbrella.
...and other delusions. 😉
He's gonna SEE THE TRUE FACE OF PANIC
Quote.
"When I stopped tuning my guitars, Djenting was easy"

GLEEEEEEEENNNNNNN!!!!!
After watching your vid yesterday, I’m back here working my way through some old vids. SMT is still the best series of all time on TH-cam.
Give my best to the Mrs mate, hope to see you back soon.
Someone needs to invent an effect called "Audio Blur." Shoegazers would pay top dollar for that shit.
There's a VST plugin called Valhalla supermassive that has an effect that starts as a delay and transitions into a reverb. That's where my mind goes when I hear that term.
@@droptherapy2085 Ah, Supermassive, probably the greatest free plugin ever released (next to any of Tokyo Dawn Lab's free plugins, or Apogee's new free Soft Limit plugin...or a lot of JS plugins, actually)
@@paisleepunk thank. you. I can't find free plug-ins for jack, and I'm just a lazy moron who spends an hour making tones and effects with my Studio One 5 presets
Now that's freaking funny, they should also add a huge button on it called "BPM eliminator" to really mess with the uniformed folks heads, lol.
8:43 "I love my sound which is my own" Honestly there's no arguing here, that's completely valid in my eyes, they clearly want their music to sound a certain way. Missed this series so much by the way, so glad to have another one!
engaging for Glenn.
There’s so much irony when it comes to musicians, who desperately want to get paid for their art, desperately trying to get art/contributions from others for free
Glenn talks like he actually expects people to get smarter. Ah, what optimism.
He's a glass half full kinda guy. Real straight shooter
Well, I think it's either going to be to hold out hope for the musicians he has to work with, or succumb to the urge to being an axe murderer.
Looks like I’m not the only one who immediately looked for this playlist 😂 it’s gold for sure!
When the voice was getting higher when he was talking about the Kemper one 😂😂😂😂
These are classics
3:08 "You've got Netflix to watch and weed to smoke."
I didn't come here to be attacked today.
Kidding, thanks for the awesome videos as always Glenn. 🤘🏻
'''worshiping an inanimate object"" me looking over at my HM2 shrine
You are forgiving for this crime, for having good taste.
A dozen successful Gothenburg bands can't all be wrong. 😉
There's quite a few rock singers, metal singers especially, that are singing awesomely in their 40s, 50s, and 60s. They tend to not go heavy on the drugs
Then there was Lemmy.. but he layed off the drugs after his mid 40's-50's if I remember righ
You are so fucking funny! I love how you do personal modifications with your SLEDGE-O-MATIC.
Best wishes, Glenn! I wish a very speedy recovery to your wife.
Watching the stupid musician texts makes me feel better as a musician, and pity the engineers for dealing with this king of behavior.
I’m going to try my best to like and comment on each of the videos.
Glenn You rock!
My wife says “hello Glenn” anytime she hears me watching your videos haha
Now I want to put "Supercharged" stickers on everything. Coffee cup, spoon, broom, underwear...
I never understood freeloaders.
I actually OFFER to pay people for their services, INCLUDING album artwork...
If I personally know the person I'll usually pay them more than I normally would, just because I don't wanna take advantage of our friendship.
Exactly,at the least.Im going to pay the person for there time. I'd be embarrassed of myself to pull something like that.
That mentality of wanting people to work for exposure is despicable. The artist I hired for the artwork of my album asked for such a cheap price and did such a fantastic job that I actually paid him more than what he asked for ...
Good work deserves good payments.
@@DerelictEarth Right on,sounds like they had some humility and wanted there artwork to stand on its own.👍have good one man, stay safe.🤘
I LOVE that cymbals-shattering effect: 128 mp3 rendering.
Stupid Musician Texts is what got me into this channels a couple of years back. Absolutely love it!
GLEN I LOVE YOUR SHIRT! HE'S STILL OUT THERE SHAKING HIS HEAD AT US, MAN! He experimented mildly with grass, you know! 😋
Thanks Glenn, you've showcased how people who are assholes have stupid questions, and people who are respectful, but dont have a lot of knowledge are not.
Big Names On Gearslutz™ can't be wrong.
I'm gonna use that from now on.
Kemper is good. I owned one and was very happy with it. The thing is, the Kemper is a stand alone unit and can be easily used live. VSTs can be used live, too, but you will need at least some kind of laptop/pc. VSTs sound very good nowadays, but it depends on your usecase if you want one or the other.
Yeah. Kempers, AxeFX, the line 6 helix stuff... it all has value outside of the studio. I think Kemper gets shit on like this because it's often marketed as a studio solution, but it doesn't really stand up to VSTs and amp sims cost/value in studio situations anymore.
Its true value is in a live situation, where I'd be more comfortable with that kind of closed ecosystem instead of a laptop with ableton and some amp sim VSTs.
@@porcubot A lot has happened since the Kemper amp was introduced 9 years ago, while its still good at copying amps at a certain setting other manufacturers has also gotten very close to reproducing the real deal and some have made attempts to add profiling types of function to their units. Today Kemper seems a bit old hardwarewise and many have better user interface.
Thanks
Few years ago I managed my band to play a charity gig. There was 2 hour drive to the place. We were scheduled to play 4pm and start a soundcheck on 3pm (and set all gear on stage before 3pm). Lead singer told that if we play 4pm we go at 2 pm because there's 2 hour drive. Ba dum tsssss.
I bought a pair of Kali LP6's on you recommendation. Couldn't be happier! Thanks, Glenn!
My heart goes out to you and your wife, Glenn.❤ From one cannuck to another, wishing you both well.🤘❤️
“Make writing great songs a priority”
PUT THAT ON A T-SHIRT!
the guys "moding" the poultecs are probably the same ones
moding their honda civics with spoilers and loud mufflers to super charge their "race car" 🤣
LMFAO
We had a kid on our street that had a 4cyl Honda with a big coffee can exhaust on it. I told my wife that it sounded like he had to pop the hood and pull start it every morning, and that it probably ran on Monster energy drinks.
"Audio blur" Brilliant.
I bought LP6's on your recommendation about a year ago and honestly could not be happier. glad to see kali as a sponsor in the beginning of the vid, you definitely made a customer outta me
I could kick myself. I've only just discovered these "stupid musician texts" and have binge watched each and every episode. Comedy gold. Musicians never cease to amaze when it comes to arrogance, ignorance and every other "ance".
I can't believe that kid would destroy the sanctity of some of the best lines of deathcore
Here to support man. We’ll be waiting!!
Watching Glenn piss people off is how I spend my weekends.
Finally a new episode of my favorite series.
After a bad week at work etc. This....THIS video was so needed, thanks for the laughs Glenn!
Leaving a comment just in case it helps!
The fire breathing giraffe is amazing!
I’d LOVE an entry level series or video done by nice guy Glenn
Lol "audio blur" I like that.
Adding "Audio blur" to my vocabulary
There is a "Audio blur" function in FL Studio's Edison audio editor.
Audio Blur makes the funny sounds go Bzzz. 🙃🤓
I think the Kemper still has it's place. Not neccessarily in a studio, it is VST in a fancy enclosure afterall. But for a guitar player that wants to play live or without the hastle of setting up a computer, it's a cool plug and play situation. While you should not overestimate it, it still has it's place as a tool in certain environments.
On the note of your basic audio tutorials, I genuinely appreciate them.
Even though I've been a live player for almost 10 years, and was familiar with the basic ideas/terms, I never felt comfortable or knowledgeable in a recording environment.
Now, I've spent a few months with Reaper, and demo'd enough plugins to find the ones I like.
Thanks again for making videos on the subjects we're too embarrassed to ask about.
I recently got some Kali LP-6s and love them! I'm glad to see Glenn approves. The dip switches are really helpful for non-ideal rooms.
Hey Glen was super inspired by your keto episode
6 pounds down in 2 weeks, so much energy and mental clarity
🤘🤘
Love this, Glenn! Family first. I will pray and play
(@8:10) OK, When Blue Rodeo was being put together the members ran an add looking for a guitar player. One of the requirements was that you had to have dropped acid at least 3 times (summer 0f 1984 in Toronto). It seemed to work out for them... YMMV.
Blue who?
@@SpectreSoundStudios Maybe too soft for you. Cuddy/Keelor were a great song writing combo.
Love that you are still working with Kali Audio. Bought the LP-6 's cause you recommended them and holy shit. For $150 a piece these things kick major ass! Love your shit man, you keep me motivated🤘
(not sure where to ask questions so I'll throw it on here) I'm not your average viewer since I'm mainly working on hip hop and rap, but a lot of your advice has worked wonders for my personal taste (btw the kali 6's i just got, thank you for putting those on the spot light, i'm so happy with these things, and hate all my prior mixes now). I'm about to invest in my music, which is focused on a digital release through various things. I was wondering if you had tips and hints for trademarking artist/band names, a safe site since skepticism is usually what comes up when I see 'ad' next too all the google results, thanks again. Sorry for being wordy.
Rofl, the one at 1:50 had me going! The way that was handled was absolutely epic.
Years ago (2005-2010) when I was trying to make it in the local music scene, I came to be aware of the fact that "core" kids were usually cowardly assholes. These were the same kids that would "accidentally" hit you in the face with their "dancing" that they did in the mosh pit and then act confused when you found them in the parking lot and confronted them.
There was this one time where a bandmate of mine was playing a show with a side band of his at a place called Faith Family Church. This place was literally a one-room suite in a strip mall where they'd have worship services during the day and scenecore concerts at night. I had posted on MySpace that I looked forward to going to this show to support my bandmate and his band and that I should get myself kicked out afterwards because it would be metal to get thrown out of a church. I was kidding of course, but the local scene kids didn't see it that way. The WAVE UPON WAVE of backlash was immediately overwhelming. I went back and amended that post to insist that I was, in fact, JUST KIDDING, but they didn't care. Apparently, you simply just "don't fuck with FFC!" I received massive amounts of hate messages on MySpace, and on my phone as well as they had somehow gotten my phone number. This went on for well over a month.
Funny thing is: none of the males who were harassing me would tell me their names. No one would meet me to fight. These kinds of kids are typically beta-male cowards.
Congrats Glenn! keep up the stellar work
These episodes need to be at least Once a month!
I love my kemper. I also have an HX stomp for when I play as a bassist, live. I still own at least 6 real, analog, tube amps; those aren't going anywhere. I even record my kemper through real cabs and mic them because I can still feel the difference.
That took indeed ages!! Lets go!!
It's always nice to watch a video made by an audio-guy! Perfectly recorded vocals and levels! Music to my ears, among the purely produced videos that some channels put out there (and some of them big)
I havent watched a vid of urs in a while but HOLY F, you are in great shape
I was in a couple deathcore bands. That kid was a baby. People take death core and metal to serious sometimes. Just gotta have fun my dudes.
Like Karl Sanders told me waaaaay back before Nile got signed, "Play the kind of music that you would want to listen to." 😉
In 1989 I wrote an English paper on heavy metal (because I was 15 and obsessed, obviously) and even then, without help from the internet, I knew what BPM stood for. Also, "audio blur" is a great term if you're reviewing a shoegazer metal record, but leave it for the music critics.
A note of gratitude: I'm learning how NOT to treat the people that will one day help me bring my vision to life. Learning a greater respect. AND laughing my ass off in the bargain. Thank you for this. *Humbly bows*
that is a dope shirt.. thanks for the info and the laughs this is now one of my fav channels.
'Maybe I'm a bass player who writes the lines for the other band members'
Yeah, and maybe you're not, let's get real here.
Roger Waters - Hold my beer.
Frickuh! Haha! This is the best SMT episode I’ve seen imo! From the actual texts, how you read them, and your reactions after, c’est magnifique! I now dub thee, The Hammer of Windsor!
Best video I've seen all year
LOVE the Hail Sagan shirt!!!
All the best Glenn and Julie!
Here's a story for you Glenn,
In my second or third year studying music production at university, another student (a moron) asked me: "So what kind of music do you produce?"
I responded honestly and said "I'll try my hand at producing pretty much anything but electronic music made in computers isn't really my thing."
The moron then replied with "So you play like guitar/ keys in the studio and get someone else to do your drums and shit"?
I said "No, I record the whole band/artist in the studio myself."
"Oh so you make your own drum samples in the studio and use them for your track?"
"No, I record all the musicians playing in the studio, as live as possible."
Then came the moment I knew I was never going to speak to this moron ever again when he responded with:
"Nah dude, don't do that you'll get like bleed and phasing, and you'll need to know like basic theory shit to be able to understand the musicians. Just use Logic Pro, some synth presets and a bunch of drum samples."
Glenn, your use of sarcasm is purely masterful!
What sarcasm?
Bro the shirt is freaking awesome. 🤘
The moment when you realized you spent 2 years in a band called Stereobloom when you could have named it Audioblur.
Thanks for the visual size perspective on the KALI LP6. I've been wanting to try them since they came out, especially since the rep has not faded. Either they are bigger than I thought or you're shrinking. Have a great weekend man!
Wow! Just seen your old videos and Im surprised how calm you were back then.
Suddenly remembering that time a bass player was trying out for a friend's band. He was having trouble learning a specific part and I told him "it's quarter notes" and he said "....I dunno what quarter notes are."
YES!! Thank u! X3
These r the best... Stay awesome mister
That be amazing A complete fun Basics series
Audio blur would be a hella cool envelope filter name
Don't make a tutorial on BPM, those who need more than a 10 seconds Google search to understand what it is shouldn't make any music.
Christmas in october! ❤️
My friend's band made their demo at a local studio and the engineer became an impromptu producer, using his experience to help make their songs better. The band paid him extra because they recognized his invaluable input. Have you ever provided your services as producer or do you just stick to engineering/mixing?
Here to support Glenn
Love the stupid engineer texts, always good to see what not to do lol
🤣🤣🤣 LOVE THIS SHOW!!! Glen Fricker you Rock!!!
The "Audio blur" thing.
It isn't the job of the musician to search for recording tutorials or learn audio engineering.
Their job is to play their instruments. Your job is to record and engineer.
Though, must agree, that "Reverb" is a very commonly used term, even outside of a musical context.
As stupid as it is to forget, we've all been there, perhaps it just slipped their mind, so I wouldn't judge...
"Sprinkle some fuckin' fairy dust on it!"
It’s not that hard to know what kinds of effects there are and what they do as a musician.
UNFORTUNATELY GLENN,,, 99.9 % of Musicians today don't have COMMEN SENSE ! 🙄
This makes me feel a bit better about my music and my life
Yes I would love to see some videos on the "entry level"
Thanks for all you do Glen, it really helps us "GUITAR GODS" haha. Be well
Mike
my Kali LP8's are wicked. amazing bang for the buck
Dude..I love the SMT comments when the high pitch voice picks up..lolololol funny AF
That voice change at 3.53 had me tears 😂😂😂
Man when I need a good laugh I listen to you.
