Looking at mass ranged units and how they counter air I think back to Battle Realms. A great pre-WC3 RTS (with outstanding music that flourished dramatically when engaging enemies); it had a severe penalty for players who allowed their ranged units to engage melee ones by having them switch to a paltry melee attack. This meant if players weren't deliberate with their positioning, 1 melee unit could "disable" several ranged ones by strategically placing itself in their midst.
I tried Battle Realms this year and did not really like it, but this anti-range mechanic and switching to melee actually sounds like quite a good mechanic that can make melee more relevant and make positioning matter more
@@FollowGrubby no two ways about it, WC3 raised the bar to where BR became grotesquely obsolete. You don't appreciate WC3's AI until you struggle to keep an unruly army from chasing bait. Beyond curiosity, the only reason to visit it today would be the lax competition.

No amount of ice cream can make me forgive the tricycle nerf. All my strats were built around it.
I think mk bash is magic dmg so it only get 25% reduced by basic magic res from heroes and there should be no return from the 75dmg only the base dmg he deals with the attack
Idk, does bash work on ranged? Eg. Does the pick work with say far seer? If it doesn't, meaning bash is explicitly melee, carapace is meant to punish melee attacks against the user. So while I agree that it should be counted as magic damage, I believe to hold true to the premise of carapace, it would make sense to return the damage in kind. Otherwise, you'd be completely sidestepping a hero ability, and no other hero really does that you know what I mean?
@@keithomilak3693 Bash does work on range, bash is basically same as critical strike but with fixed damage and stun instead of multiplier (It also semi-stack with crit and can be changed to give dmg mult and evasion too). It is also does magic damage as a SPELL attack, so it will never trigger spikes. Spike only trigger on melee damage from NORMAL attack. This is why when you script map and damage a unit via trigger, there is an attack type and damage type. You can test this out easily by creating a custom map.

Cloak of Flames Engulfs the Hero in fire which deals (10 before) 15 damage per second to nearby enemy land units. (Immolation lvl 2 deals 22 per second)
Hood of Cunning Increases the Agility and Intelligence of the Hero by 6 when worn.

That human mirror is the most ridiculous thing I've seen in a while.
The morale boost is true! Humans were absurdly nerfed throught the years. It felt as if human should not be allowed to play the game. Seeing it get some love creates a positive emotion that gets attached into it

I think it's not as bad as you think.
There will be another balance, and fading that balance and meta is the actual meat of a strategy game.
I agree some equilibriums are more trivial than others, but as long as the situation is transitionary, even that is not too bad.

I was trying to improve pally and just made Holy Light AoE (reduced the healing to the 120-150 range at max).
But the AoE would harm UD in the same cast.
It's interesting where they decided to try improving the heroes that are almost never played.

Hot take - if you have a lvl 3 ability you deserve to crush faces with it, while buffs to levels 1 and 2 are somewhat reasonable. Statistical data may also suggest this - like if you have lvl3 devotion fast - then perhaps you made compromises on heals, or on number of heroes, or didn't pick your ulti or divine shield. All those choices have tradebacks - and perhaps statistically this path was the weakest by far.
9 armor won't make you any good if on the way there you have two times smaller army because opponent was kicking your ass all the way for not going with different starting hero for example.
p.s. my dog barfed on the carpet while I was writing this comment, perhaps it is a sign to not play devil's advocate too hard

I played a lot of WC3, but never could manage to play more than 1-2 hours a day. I got so stressed if I tried to press on for longer...
It seems time to kill has really risen in recent wc3, armor is as prevalent as ever, and all damage items were nerfed. I dont remember everyone being so tanky lmao

I'm hoping crip lord main with death night dark packed death coil support to eat your bugs is the new meta.
What would be really nice is if spiked carapace also gave hp regeneration.
Then it would be as good as devotion aura since it would make CL really sustainable in fights and you could send him in headfirst, so you can make use of the ability.
Something like: +1/+2/+3/+4 hp regen.
Or if it had a double damage reflection active ability that reflects spell damage aswell and increased in duration per lvls.
Why not making it invulnerable, that's more effective. How could you not think of that huh?

Wait ... the Warden is going to be doing 1200 total max damage with a max rank Fan of Knives? Good god, that seems incredibly insane. Solo Warden will be able to shred just about any army, not to mention her increased mobility by lowering the cooldown of her Blink to 2.5s at max rank.
It's a good buff but it's really just +1 max targets. Unlikely to be that impactful when 60-80 pop armies are facing off.

More armor you have - more you need for next -1% damage taken.
I say they better add hp regen to this aura.
Also Pitlord totally counter Paladin with his scream and cleave(ignore armor btw)
@@user-go2ld4ti6r yeah I know that you get diminishing returns, but it's still way too much. Pitlord countering paladin is rather questionable, since pitlord is undead so the pala can holy light it.
You don't actually get diminishing returns from armor. Each point of armor adds 6% effective HP based on your health pool
Looking at the percent damage reduction is misleading because the value of 1% dmg reduction is not constant -- it depends on how much percent dmg reduction you already have. For example, a 1% dmg reduction means a lot more when going from 98% reduction to 99% reduction than going from 0% reduction to 1% reduction. Going from 98% reduction to 99% reduction would be reducing the amount of dmg you take from 2% to 1%, which is halving the amount of dmg you take, whereas going from 0% reduction to 1% reduction reduces the dmg you take from 100% to 99%, which is only a 1% change in the amount of dmg you take

The issue is that carapace has a hard counter: enemy hitting other things.
I wish Grub were in charge of the new changes. This is pretty ridiculous. Game was in a really good state--and there are some really good changes--but I have to wonder if the devs really appreciate the game for what it was.

The only way CL would be viable would be to have the beetles have carapace too and perhaps impale also makes beetles cast mini-impale one unit infront of them. Such a trash hero..

Was there always 2 beetles per spell? Could've sworn it was only one.
It was only one. They made a patch in 2020 to increase count from one to two and cooldown increased from 6 to 9 with mana going from 30 to 45. Max amount of beetles increased from 5 to 6. It was a massive buff to the spell, which has subsequently also been hit by a few minor nerfs.

Jokes aside, imho i still think Spiked Carapace is the worst skill in the game.
Not only are its bonuses unimpressive but you are also giving up on either Impale or Beetles.
And if you go CLord first you have no realistically effective way to heal your tanking CLord (sacrificial dagger is a joke for hero healing).
I would much rather see the "damage reflect" part of that skill removed and replaced with a large amount of passive health regeneration.
I think it would be really good to have an active portion in the ability where damage reflect is doubled for 5 seconds.
This would also reflect spells like stormbolt etc.
I feel like people are overreacting to PTR patch notes having absurd numbers at first. its the test realm might as well go nuts first and tone down based off of results and feedback

Human might be the second most popular race to play but if you cut each race off at their top 50,
NE would be the best, Human the second best, UD the third, and Orc is the worst.
Not sure how to read the statistics here because it might be a popularity thing, but NE has their top 50 players in the top 167 total players while Orc has their 50th best player ranked at 267.
Human and UD are in between those numbers. (195 for human and 203 for UD if I recall correctly).

Rumble sucked. I played it for a full day and after a while you start to see what a money grab it was. Too bad. Super fun at the start. They give better units to players that spent money lol. Its like 120 for 120000 gold. Ridiculous.

Would Pala's aura protect against the damage return? His aura's defense is comparable to CL's skill, so that's gonna be a problem
