I am under the federal offset. Out of $488 a month, I get $197. I worked private industry in addition to 14 years Army Reserves. My medicare is expensive but unrelated to this subject. Its unfair in so many ways.

Oh, isn’t it just fantastic how I’ve paid into social security for ages only to receive a generous, interest-free paycheck in return? Truly, what a delightful way to be rewarded for my contributions! And let’s not forget how they thrive off my hard-earned cash while I just get these crumbs back. Why, it’s just splendid that some folks have to pay taxes again-because, obviously, who doesn’t love double-dipping into the wallet? Instead of sending our tax dollars to places that clearly adore us and to those who may not be quite as fortunate, wouldn’t it be a brilliant idea to boost our benefits? I mean, if only someone would bother to investigate the shocking revelation that many are struggling to get by! In my own delightful saga, I’ve even had the joy of relocating to South America just to enjoy a "normal" existence. Truly, what a winning experience!

Thank you, Senator Cruz, for your support of this bill. Hard working public service workers and widows of retirees should not be living in poverty because of the WEP & GPO. The money was paid to Social Security; now give it back! This reduction of benefits to a certain group of people is so unfair.

Putting Social Security into a "separate fund" outside of the general fund, is pure fiction. ONE HUNDRED PERCENT of federal spending comes from keystrokes, that is, keystrokes backed by lawful orders, and by the authority of the United States Congress, and the Executive branch, including the Treasury.
None of it comes from tax payments. This includes Social Security that does not come from tax payments. FDR said so himself and he was the president responsible for enacting Social Security. Payroll taxes were never necessary. FDR told Luther Gulick that taxes were for _pure politics_ , to convince Republicans to vote for the legislation.
US dollars are United States liabilities, the same as Treasury Bonds. The difference is, Treasury Securities balances pay interest, but dollar balances don't pay interest. There's no hard limits on the number of US dollar liabilities that the United States government can issue.
The only thing that matters is pragmatic limits, like if there's sufficient goods, services, labor, and a desire to grow savings, to absorb the dollars that are being spent into existence.
Congress could easily pass legislation to add 2 trillion dollars to the spreadsheet that they call the Social Security trust fund, or order that payments come from the general fund, or just pay Social Security and record a negative balance.
At the same time, Congress could abolish the payroll tax.
As a consumer of dollars, you can't write checks if you have a negative balance, but the United States government is the MONOPOLY SOURCE of lawful United States dollars.
You can create your own currency. You can write I owe you on a piece of paper and buy stuff with it, if anyone is willing to accept it, even your blood relative.
What you can't create is United States Dollars because you have no lawful authority to do so. Nor does the president. Congress can vote on budget appropriations. Congress can grant budget authority to various executive branch departments. Congress has the authority to do that.

Sen Cruz, You just lost my support!!! Just remember some people were fortunate to be able to draw their full Social Security benefits and we were not!!! We paid in the same as they did! We are not looking for a handout only what is rightfully ours. So, for you to say that the ones that have been drawing might have to take a deduction in their benefits if we are allowed to draw ours is sickening to me! My husband is dead now and so, he never got to draw his full benefit! Shame on you for being so one sided!

Remember this isn’t a gift this was something we were required to contribute to and were later deemed ineligible for! The same politics that took our contributions and allotted it to others who were wives who didn’t work, children who lost their parents and let’s not forget the immigrants that didn’t pay in here! We have a million people who were affected and social security was cut or denied so, how many millions of dollars have these same people paid in that has enriched this fund without drawing from it? You have had plenty of time to fix this problem! Over 40 years!!!! You now have ten years again to fix this!!!

Ted Cruz what about the seniors who have already been hurt by this? Thanks for being so unbiased and throwing the rest of us in the gutter! Ted Cruz you wouldn’t understand unless you were the one being charged and denied your benefits! These seniors have already been hurt! Why don’t you all dip into your pockets and fund this program! You didn’t mind putting a raise increase into the paperwork for yourselves!

Dang well better keep the promise. SS is a retirement trust paid into by the seniors. It should never be used for anything else than paying the benefits. As a matter of fact, the interest on the payments is unfair, has not been on par with the market for ever. It's embarrassing and disgraceful to treat those that built and sustained this country. Over the past ten years the lack of responsibility and integrity for the stability of the USA is sad. Seems like an intent, but wouldn't that be damning? smh

Nobody is getting SS that didn't pay into it. Many people worked more than one job. The WEP penalizes those with a gov't pension who also had SS taken out at another job. We don't get our full SS that we are entitled to!

  • @gg_rider

If there's an automatic law that cuts Social Security by 20%, when the account balance is reduced too far, then there's two other choices.
One, repeal that law that cuts payments. The Fed doesn't bounce checks for ACH payments issued by the Treasury. The payments can go through, regardless.
If there is now a law that says Treasury overdrafts won't be paid, then change that law. All of this exists in law, not a law of nature like gravity or the sex of a human being. It's just the accounting rules.
Accounting rules have to add up but that doesn't mean that Congress is incapable of changing the rules of how government institutions function.
Two, if Congress has this obsession about this "separate account" that it MUST HAVE a positive balance, then pass a bill that adds the number 2,000,000,000,000 (2 trillion) to the account balance of the so-called TRUST FUND, and then stop worrying about it for a hundred years.
This is just a waste of time. The idea that the United States government can ever "go broke" in terms of United States dollars is a hoax bigger than every other hoax of the year that you can think of.

Democrats only bring it up at election time.
Their solution was to accuse the Republicans of trying to take away Granny's SS instead of addressing the issue.
      It is all of them.
