    I mean, half the reason I got a snake was because I want to keep the annoying relatives to a minimum, and most of them are afraid of snakes

      I'm the kinda person who find it hard to say, No to someone. And I don't like visitors in my home actually, esp uninvited ones. Having my pet Mexican Black Kingsnake actually helped deter a lot of people from visiting my home. 🥰🥰
      Also, I managed to keep people from opening my freezer and raid my ice-creams supplies. I love my ice-creams amd would stock up a lot of them in my freezer. So, when I told my visitors that, its also where I kept my frozen mice.. lol... my ice-creams are safe..😂😂

    Another great video! When people tell me they are horribly afraid of snakes I do like to say, "Well that's really pretty normal, a lot of people are, but I promise not to show you pics unless you say you want to see them. If you come over to my house both snakes are in locked enclosures and they hide all day so you'd never know they were there. I only bring them out if people *want* to see them, but I respect that not everybody does." People with a real fear often just need reassuring that you respect their boundaries and won't pull some horrible trick on them or use their fear to amuse yourself.
    For example, my own Mom just isn't a big fan of snakes, so I don't show her videos or ask if she wants to hold them. She'll watch my nieces and nephews hold my ball python, and I am really proud of the bravery that takes from her. If she changes her mind about it she'll let me know.
    Edit: Also PIP!! Is adorable!!

    Thanks for this. I had to get off a Reddit board for this reason. It was a toxic environment with no room for discussion. They were so hard set on their "rules" of what is best for Ball Python that they alienate those asking for real help. I got scolded for saying I took a very gentle soaking wet warm wash cloth to my BP for thick stuck shed. It went against their code of conduct. - and the fact I use a heating pad with a thermostat cause it's the only way I found to keep proper humidity in my Sahara desert dry house. All perfect sheds since I switched and they are eating better too. Heading for the discord server - I miss the comradery of other keepers sharing their fun with their pets.

    My subadult female BP just broke her fast last night since November. No noticeable loss of size or weight, shedding normally, just showed no interest in any food item (but still kept trying regularly), until she did. She ate this small rat that I simply warmed-up and set in the entrance to her hide and left overnight (after trying all kind of different tricks these past months). So relieved. But writing specifically b/c Bob once said that a fasting BP probably won't allow itself to starve (assuming it is otherwise healthy/well-kept). That "advice" was what got me through this otherwise incredibly stressful (on me) period of frustration. So thanks.

    Every purchase I've had on Morph market has been incredible but make sure you check reviews and make sure they have a little bit of a history at least. Also cold-blooded shop down in Florida does pre-treat their animals before they sell them when speaking about imports or wild caught they do great work.

It is really a shame that your psychiatrist had (hopefully not still has with other patients?) such an unprofessional reaction to something you as a patient said. Something like this can hurt a vulnerable person really badly and endanger them.
      Glad to hear that you got over your anxiety and still love your beautiful reptiles!

    Heat rocks were considered a really bad idea back in the early 90's when I got my first snake. I have no idea why they are still available for purchase given their reputation.
    Being an older guy with a long history of keeping snakes and using the really terrible husbandry we used back then, and improving as we learned more, I will say I still have a 'functioning" red heat bulb. That 'function' is pretty air-quotey... I use it to test dimmer switches on new light fixtures before putting Ceramic Heat Emitters (CHE) in them.😁

    Can confirm my ball python is an idiot and has tried to squeeze through holes he's far too big to fit through. Whenever someone tells me they hate snakes, I ask why, then I tell them why I love snakes. If neither of us understand the other by the end m so be it, but we both get our opinions off our chests, have an interesting talk, understand one another better, and feel a little fulfilled while moving on. This only really works if you and your friend in question already respect one another, are willing to discuss differences without getting butt hurt, and are capable of understanding were allowed to have differences of opinion.

    My advice giving is a little odd. See I've had two snakes, but technically I had one for a very short period of time.
    I say I've had two because technically one belongs to my son, our current pet. The first was mine but was taken from me in a breakup a few months after we got him.
    So I really am not a super experienced potent owner... That said:
    I've been obsessed with having a snake my entire life. I've loved them since the first one fell asleep in my hands the literal first time I held one. It was a black and white king snake and he was so tiny. I held him at a pet store and he fell asleep with his little tiny tail wrapped around my finger.
    Since then, I've revealed in any information I learned about snakes. I got really into snake TH-cam when I first started watching Brian Barch... Yeah I don't know how to spell his name... Back even before the controversies he was in. I'm disabled and my condition got worse and because I thought I'd never be well enough to interact with, let alone care for a snake, I stopped watching. It made me sad. Then he started being considered controversial and all the other big TH-camrs started points up and I found Snake Discovery. I LOVED that channel and started finding more. There are some I enjoyed more than others and so I started watching snake content again. After a few years, my kids fish had all passed away. He was only 8 but he was a better fish owner than I ever had. He expressed an interest in a pretty that he could interact with more. I talked to him about all kinds of rodents, and then brought up lizards. He knew I loved snakes and asked my favorite. Four years went by and he got, with his own money, his first Blue Eyed Lucy Ball Python. We got his enclosure and because of my knowledge and extensive research, we got a healthy, amazing, beautiful snake that could double as jewelry for royalty, with Sapphire Blue eyes.
    Now I give people advice. I've mostly kept up with snake husbandry since I was 8 ish, and learned despite thinking I would ever put that knowledge to use until I had a kid of the same age. I studied like crazy then, knowing my knowledge would not only affect an actual living beings, but would decelerate my child if I got it wrong and his new friend passed away.
    Now that we have him, and have for 2 years as of a few days ago, I'm actually most likely his closest friend. I spend literally every day he isn't shedding, eating, and/out popping, socializing him. He even now my in the lips when I make kissey noises, and will press his neck into my lips when he wants me to kiss his favorite kissey spot❤.
    My point is, I haven't really been a super experienced snake owner, but because I've been into snakes for the greater part of the 40 years I've been on this planet, I feel like I have a bit of an edge on people who have had a snake the same amount of time, but aren't as meticulous about their research. Heck, I even still watch these kinds of videos so I don't forget how to do it right and as reminders of how to change things when our little Sans (named after a skeleton with a blue eye and jacket) hits his adorable little milestones.

    This is a really great video! Although I will say that I give the ball python I'm fostering a little night drop to the high 60s F to low 70s F . I do this because I feel it is more natural and I have heard from channels like reptiles and research that it can be good for them. However, if it is winter I will change out the heat bulb for the ceramic heat emitter (both on a dimming thermostat) so that at night temperatures don't drop so low.
    But really I am open to hearing other perspectives and have actually considered joining the green room pythons discord server to ask the occasional question (as in many ways I am still new to Ball Pythons and lack experience).
    Thanks for the great videos, I try to watch and read stuff from many sources to get multiple perspectives!

      Night drops can definitely be done if you know what you're doing but I don't recommend them because a lot of people get confused. Just to simplify their husbandry, most pythons do well with consistent temps. But it sounds like you've got night drops figured out so I'm sure your snake is doing fine with it

A little humor stolen from comedian Bill Engvall. Just kidding, I didn’t say that last part. But, instead, I kept it classy and said something like “well, traditionally, I think many people do think this, but surprisingly, after working with them so long I have found they are great pets.” I still think she had trouble processing my answer.

    Most of the people who talk to me about hating snakes are friends or acquaintances and usually they are afraid but open to hearing about them. After explaining that outside of Africa and South Asian areas with poor medical care, snakes are rarely harmful and generally not inclined to bite.
    Some people just don't understand the nature of snakes. They don't see them as sentient creatures that think, feel, and learn. They don't understand they are a single rung below the bottom of the food chain. Ball Pythons are the best ambassadors for that I think because their faces look so non threatening and doofy.

    I don't mind when people are like "ew snakes" or or say they're scared of them because I'm scared of dogs so I definitely get it. I don't know if it ever happens to you but I run into a surprising number of people who, when they find out I keep snakes, feel the need to tell me all about the gruesome way they killed a snake or saw one die one time and honestly that bums me out so much. I usually just walk away when it happens because I know anything I say is probably just going to make them accuse me of being too sensitive but it usually kind of ruins my day. I REALLY don't get that. I can't imagine hearing about someone's dog that they clearly love and being like "oh btw I saw this horrific thing happen to a dog once let me tell you in graphic detail wow isn't that so funny, dead dog hahahaha"

    hey! loved this video however snakes need lighted heat (basking bulbs or halogen bulb etc) as it best replicates the sun. studies show that CHE and DHP dont properly penetrate all 7 layers of skin with means the the snake cant absorb nutrients correctly. over time this can cause vitamin deficiency and you have start seeing deformities in clutches. halogen bulbs produce irc, ira and irb heat where as CHE only produce irc and irb. dhp are reached for as they produce all three but unfortunately they only emit small amounts of irb and ira.

    • @GreenRoomPythons
      @GreenRoomPythons  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I've heard this debate before but haven't seen any actual science on it - other than claims from a bulb manufacturer. Snakes have been produced for many years at breeder facilities with no light at all. They've been able to live full healthy lives and have healthy clutches every year. I do think it's important to give a snake a day night cycle, though, and I do think there are benefits to halogen and UV bulbs - and even though it's hotly debated in some forms, it's just not necessary for the basic long-term care of a snake.
      I may do a video at some point, though, that outlines the potential benefits of those different light sources.

      @noctae_alkyone 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Agreed! I recently switched my ball python over to a huge enclosure with a heat lamp and uvb heating setup, with a heatmat only for nighttime heat. Not only did she not become "stressed and refusing food and not shedding properly" like how a lot of rack breeders love to tout, but she's become more active, she's got a much better muscle tone, has a stronger feeding response and her colors have gotten more vibrant. She wasn't unhealthy before per se, like she did eat and do all the normal snake things and she wasn't sick at all, but the difference between before and after is like night and day.

      They haven't been any studies that have shown that that that I have found it I've been looking for several years now. There's been anecdotal claims by the people that manufacture those heat sources. That is a large difference between actual studies. If an actual study does exist that hasn't been discredited or is one of the ones that keeps getting misrepresented from the '50s, I would absolutely love to see a link. However everything I've examined has not actually said what the people who hand it to me say it says. Sometimes it says the exact opposite. But seriously I would really love to see a legitimate one because I think there's some interesting information there especially with the specific wavelengths that normally would come with ultraviolet engaging the healing from ultraviolet exposure in the skin because those two wavelengths always appear together and thus got linked in the skin management systems, but I haven't seen anything really going in-depth beyond hypotheticals.

    • @darcieclements4880
      @darcieclements4880 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@noctae_alkyone since you changed so much at the same time the benefits are not necessarily specific to the lighting. It's great that your animals happy with it. I have a hognose and she absolutely hates UV light. She liked it very briefly and then I think she spent a little too much time in it and decided she hated it. I've been thinking of trying a different brand and introducing it again after extended time without it since she became actively avoidant. It is important to give your animal the option of being in or out of the light so you can actually see if they are avoiding it or not because if they can't escape it eventually they'll just give up. When mine was given the choice she avoided it like the plague. But she's not a ball python. Now the benefits of the UVB have been seen in a species of snake, specifically corn snakes. But there's nothing that says just because it is beneficial to corn snakes it's automatically beneficial to the other species. It could be beneficial but it could also be annoying and the pigmentation of the animal could also make a difference in this. we are talking about a species though that can't close its eyes so light irritation as a possibility is something to be cognizant of.
      What I did for mine was have the UVB on the timer and it would turn on and off at different times of day. She would burrow every time it turned on and then come out when it turned back off.

    • @noctae_alkyone
      @noctae_alkyone 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@darcieclements4880 My comment was from 5 months ago, so the good news is that I can confidently say the UVB that you've fixated on does make a difference. My ball python and cali kingsnake (both wild type morphs) still cryptic or openly bask under it at times, when before I had never seen such behavior with using heat mats. My ball python has actually laid flat under her UVB lamp multiple times, even when there's plenty of other places to warm up away from the lamp ie. a dark, warm hide sandwiched between the basking bulb and a heatmat or the back of her enclosure. My kingsnake will often lay half-hidden under the lamp, when again, she has multiple options to fully hide herself and burrow.
      However, of course not everything will work for every snake, especially where morphs with reduced pigmentation are concerned. I have a snow corn snake, as well, that I've ultimately decided to give a basking bulb but not UVB for now, as he barely comes out during the day anyway (even in his quarantine enclosure that was just a tub and a heatmat he was like this) and I'm worried about UV doing more harm than good in the long term due to his lack of melanin.

      It's not the recommended way to do it but I have said in other videos that snakes who have been doing it for years are used to it and it is very unlikely to cause them any extra stress. I wouldn't recommend it to anybody who is bringing a snake home for the first time though. There's really no reason to do it and a snake that isn't used to it could regurgitate because it puts some extra stress on them. I doubt your snake is stressed about it at all at this point though.

      I have done it with my baby BP from the first moment I got her home. She is a well socialized snake and never has shown any stress being fed like this. Her breeder also does it with his snakes (he is a breeder out of passion and has only got about 15 snakes)
      When she has eaten I put her back to her enclosure while she is still in her box and let her crawl back into the enclosure at her own speed.So I don´t need to touch her. No stress at all.
      I do the same with my corn snakes. Their feeding boxes are so small (and their enclosures so big) that I can just put the feeding boxes into the enclosures and they crawl out when they are in the mood to do so. Most times they spend quite a while in the boxes sniffing around for another mouse.
      So if you have done that for YEARS you really really don´t need to worry! Everything is perfectly o.k.!

To have the best success, use a hair dryer to blow the scent into the enclosure and wait until your snake comes out of the hide before you offer the frozen thawed

    Biggest thing to me to NOT do as a new keeper is, DO NOT IGNORE THE LAWS! Yes, many are unfair and stupid and poorly written. But knowing the law and not knowing the law is the difference between heartache and being ok. Remember it doesn't stop at state laws, but also county and city laws. Where I live there are different laws for each jurisdiction, and yes, they contradict each other. Just remember if you don't know the law, there is a chance you have a "friend", neighbor, or relative that does and will feel just fine promoting their civic duty turning you in.
    FYI - Just because it's for sale near where you live doesn't mean it's legal where you live. This goes double if you are buying at a show. And often the breeder that has traveled for that show isn't up to date on your city and county laws.
    Sorry about the rant but living in a weird location is odd. Heck where I live promotes catching your snakes from the wild and those aren't subject to local laws as they are superseded by the state. In my state there are 8 or 10 species you can take 4 per species year or 6 in aggregate per year. Two species I would love to have can only be obtained this way. It's just sad and confusing.

      In nature, these snakes spend most of their time in burrows underground. Their temperature and humidity in those boroughs doesn't change much over a 24-hour period of time. Those boroughs allow them to escape the heat of the day, and at night there's not much of a change... I believe in providing my snakes with a day/night light cycle, but again, in the wild they are spending the day in a dark burrow. They're usually only coming out at dusk and dawn where there might still be a little bit of light, but they're just not using the sun very often in the wild. I think they can definitely tell day from night, though, and I think that's important for their sleep cycle.
      It's great to try to do a bioactive enclosure if you can keep them healthy that way, but the reality is that we are still keeping them in a box on the other side of the world so it's going to be very difficult to accurately replicate their environment in West Africa.

    Great advice for sure but have one off topic question have you ever had a ball python that would just mash the dead rat against the wall with the thickest part of the body mine has been doing that lately is it something from wild instincts or just smart and just figured out a new way of doing things I mean not even a strike just using her side to football tackle it against the wall lol

    • @GreenRoomPythons
      @GreenRoomPythons  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      In the wild, they will raid a rodent den and oftentimes have one rodent in their mouth while they pin the others against the wall, so that is something they do naturally.

      @@GreenRoomPythons I kinda figured that if one tried to squeeze past in a tunnel they would do that but it was pure strategy lol she looked at it first and then made a u shape and just slammed and pressed lol i still think she’s got skills going along with nature instincts she’s definitely a good girl will watch tv a lot longer than most animals and will hold onto my finger with her tail for comfort and try to pull me along to explore and if I pull my finger away she gets nervous and turns around and climbs me like a tree of safety they really r much more to them than they get credit for by people that never give them a chance

    Did I hear right? I thought I heard that you don't feed your snakes in a separate bin in this video? Now I am a little confused because in my research, I have heard others suggest using that so that the snake does not associate your hand with food when reaching into the enclosure. So should I just be feeding the snake in the enclosure?
    BTW, I love watching these videos because of Kent. He cracks me up.

    • @GreenRoomPythons
      @GreenRoomPythons  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, feeding in a separate bin is outdated information. Oftentimes you'll still hear pet stores suggesting that because the employee doesn't know any better. Ball pythons don't really get "cage aggressive", but for any individual who does, regardless of the species, tap training is the better way to solve that.
      The problem with moving a snake to feed is that you risk regurgitation, which is a fairly significant medical issue for a snake.

    So I've had a ball python for about 2 months now... For the most part, everything is going great. I was worried that she wouldn't eat thawed rats since the breeder had raised he exclusively on live rats, but she's only skipped one meal in that time (first time I tried to feed she ignored it, three days later she ate). But here's the weird thing; she seems to be a shy eater, she doesn't strike at the rat in tongs, in fact she'll slowly back away if I put it too close... So I've just been leaving the thawed rat in her enclosure then coming back about a half hour later and by that time she's always eaten it... Is this anything I should be concerned about? I mean, she's eating so it must not be a huge deal, but is this an indication that something might be slightly off?
    Thanks for all the great advice that has gotten me this far!

    Hi so I have a question about a ball python that I have and I've had him for about a year and a half and I feed him small mice and just recently he's been eating a lot I fed him 3 small mice (he usually eats 1-2) and he still strikes idk if I should feed him a 4th or not. Idk if I should size up a mouse or not. The temp and humidity is good idk if its just stress or what but I just want to make sure I dont overfeed him. Please give me any tips or maybe if you think there is something wrong please let me know. Or maybe hes just growing 🤷‍♀

      I have some videos on feeding ball pythons that you should watch. You should feed your snake one prey item that is about as thick as the thickest part of the snake's body.

    Quick question, i have a ball python who i only recently got around a month ago, and i usually do a 12 hour day and 12 hour night cycle where i turn on and off his heat lamp, am i ment to keep the heat on longer so he stays warm? Or is it fine as it seems to not affect him when its colder at night. Also what is a safe temperature for it to be at, at night when it drops?

    • @GreenRoomPythons
      @GreenRoomPythons  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You don't need to do a night drop for ball pythons. Their temperatures are pretty steady in West Africa. It's best to use a non lighted heat source so you can provide heat 24 hours

    • @GreenRoomPythons
      @GreenRoomPythons  หลายเดือนก่อน

      It depends on your setup, sometimes you need overhead heat as well but I don't recommend any lighted heat source because you'll need it on 24 hours and the snake needs a day/night cycle

    Ohh yeah, people in FB groups are vicious. I have mentioned before that I got verbally filleted for saying that I feed my corn snake 2 adult mice at a feeding instead of a small rat. Never mind that in my area frozen mice are under $2 and frozen rats are now $7.99 each!
    I only have two snakes so I can’t really justify a full order from a frozen rodent supplier, so I choose to support my local reptile shop and buy the more reasonably priced feeders. 😂

      I have *never* fed my adult male corn a rat. Hes 8 now, just under 5 ft long and Ive had him since he was a lil shoestring of a noodle eating tiny pinkys.
      He eats large/jumbo mice, usually 2 a meal. Rats are fattier than mice and its really easy to end up with a fat corn. And especially for a thinner bodied snake like a corn, large mice are much easier to digest than a small rat. Screw the know it alls on the internet, I dont know any corn keepers that recommend rats as a major part of a full grown corn's diet.

    You need to add that just because you dont NEED a night drop, doesnt mean you cant do it. All i have are overhead lights and ive had my babygirl for 6 years with no issues. The teml drops at night in the wild and humidity goes up. Thats natural and FINE

    • @GreenRoomPythons
      @GreenRoomPythons  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I wouldn't say that I need to add that, but thanks for the suggestion!
      I would not recommend that a new keeper include a night drop for ball pythons. Even though the ambient temps in West Africa fluctuate a bit from day to night, ball pythons stay underground almost all the time during the day and emerge in the evening/early morning when the temperatures are about the same as they are underground. They don't experience much of a shift in temperature at all.
      They are a very hardy species and can survive a long time with suboptimal conditions, though. My recommendation for anyone using a heat lamp is to replace the light bulb in that lamp with a non-lighted CHE, so the snake can have access to a hotspot 24/7 anytime they want it. It's always best to give the animal the option.
      Your snake might be doing great with the way you're keeping it, especially if you live in a tropical part of the world. But most keepers are not in the tropic, so it's always best to offer a temperature gradient 24/7 for their snake.
      It sounds like you are happy with the way you're keeping your snake though, and that's great!

      @GreenRoomPythons she's in a pvc rack type enclosure with an insulted top with a top-down 75w heat and a long full spectrum bulb for funsies. It's 4ft x 2ft x 10in, and it stays around 70-75 degrees at night and 80 to 90 during the day, and the humidity is almost the exact opposite with around 75 during the day and high 80s at night. So, I guess it's not a dramatic difference on my end.
