I was in Shibuya 2 weeks ago and saw the statue. I pointed it out to my wife and gave her an overview of the history and she started crying in the middle of the crowd.

I cry even with this reaction video and i am also a man so yeah, this movie is absolutely heartbreaking.
We have a similar story in my hometown (Cadiz, Spain). A dog called Canelo kept waiting for his master in front of the hospital. His master had passed and he waited for him at the hospital for years until he also passed away. I remember seeing him on my way back from high school.
Now a street next to the hospital has his name, and a plaque in his honor 💙

If it makes you feel better, in 1994, Nippon Cultural Broadcasting in Japan was able to lift a recording of the real Hachikō barking from an old record that had been broken into several pieces. On Saturday, 28th of May 1994, 59 years after his death, millions of radio listeners tuned in to hear Hachikō's bark. 🐕

We have a Japanese Akita named Hiro. He looks like Hachi. The color is called a Red. He is extremely loyal, affectionate, and he is also able to sense the onset of my youngest son’s seizures. They are truly special dogs. It is based on a true story.
Lived in Japan for many years and my wife and I visited Tokyo a couple of times and even made our way to see the Hachiko statue. Still there today after all these years. Such a beautiful story
If I would ever visit Tokyo I'd definitely visit his statue too. He is a hero.
Yeah, Shibuya was on my way to my daily commute (until covid hit and I went full time wfh) and I've been by that statue countless times. Like Simone said, it's heartbreaking, but a good reminder of how dear these creatures are that we 'just think of as pets'.
@@_Shadoh_ I definitely recommend it. His statue is also right next to the famous Shibuya scramble crossing so if you wanted to make a day (or probably a whole morning or afternoon) of it, it's within walking distance of the Meiji Shrine, Yoyogi Park and Harajuku along with Omotesando street. Kind of a touristy thing, but I also kinda consider it a must if it's your first time to Tokyo.
edit: pre-covid (not sure since), there was a never ending line of people posing with the statue to take pictures so be prepared to wait in line (albeit usually not long as people are courteous about going in, snapping the pic and leaving for the next person) unless you're ok with just a pic from a distance.

As you know this is a true story, except it took place in Tokyo. Hachiko went to the station daily for 10 years waiting for his master to arrive. After the dog died, they created a statue of Hachiko in Shibuya, which is where people wait to meet each other. My wife is Japanese and her mother used to see Hachiko waiting at the station often.
My wife and watched it, we both ugly cried. We showed it to my mother in law, she was bawling for hours. Then she showed it to her friends and their kids, they all cried. This is the one movie that I think universally makes almost everyone cry 😂

I cried when I saw this (of course, no surprise) and even though I tend not to be much of a "crier" in general, given how objectively emotionally heart-wrenching I could see this movie is, I questioned myself "Why didn't I cry even HARDER than I ended up doing?" I got my answer later that night as I was trying to go to sleep, and scenes from the movie kept creeping into my brain and I finally noticed that I had subconsciously been pushing them away "because they were too painful to think about"... so, that would be "suppression", I'm pretty sure is the term for that. I'm aware doing that is not the healthiest thing... so I went ahead and let myself think, and process everything fully. Which did result in one of the hardest cries of my life.
Then, here I am again with this movie, watching this reaction... as I spasmodically cry my eyes out... for the third time.

This movie broke me when I saw this first time.
I remember telling myself "it's okay it's not real" then I saw its a true story and I just continued to sob uncontrollably. I always cry watching this, it never gets easier.
It's literally impossible for me to not cry when i watch this.
So i use this movie as therapy maybe once a tear, just to cry and release 🗿

I know what you mean... even though I knew it was a true story to begin with, part of my brain sort of forgot throughout the movie, then the reminder about it being a true story at the end really, really broke me 😭 And my first time was only the beginning... even though I tend not to be much of a "crier" in general, given how objectively emotionally heart-wrenching I could see this movie is, I questioned myself (regarding the FIRST time I saw it) "Why didn't I cry even HARDER than I ended up doing?" I love that the statue still even today serves as a central landmark for millions of friends to find and meet each other in one of the busiest, most densely populated downtown shopping districts in the world. It's like a part of his spirit still resides there helping others find their own loved ones as he continues to wait for his.

This was actually one of the tests that the Blade Runners used to find replicants.
My dog died last month and was one week shy of 17 years old... not gonna lie... this movie just made me sob thinking of my old and faithful friend again. I miss him so much... There is no greater companion, no better loyalty, nothing stronger than a dog's love for his master.

I had a Black Lab for 12 years. His name was ''Smokie''. I worked in a local Industry & he would sit by the door, every day at the time I was expected home. Even when I changed shifts, he quickly acclimated to the time change & there he would be. When I sat in my recliner watching TV, he would position himself in front of me, wedged between my knees, occasionally glancing up at me, seemingly to make sure I was still there & was ok. I loved that little guy so much. He is my Hero.
The loyalty of dogs is legendary. When Odysseus returned in disguise after 20 years away in the Trojan war, only his dog, Argos, recognized him, wagged his tail in greeting, and then died, his long wait over.
I’m a grown-ass man and this movie had me basically sobbing. 😭

I remember this movie, I saw it many years ago, and haven't watched it since precisely because it was heartbreaking then.
Now, at 56 and watching this reaction while laying in bed with my own dog, I'm bawling and holding him close. We're completely codependent on each other. 😢😭

I visited Japan in 2017 and came across his statue at Shibuya station. I had no idea the significance of it at the time but there was a huge crowd gathered there. Also, a cat was sleeping in between his legs. When I got back home, I looked up the statue and discovered the story about him and also found that this movie had been made about him.
This movie hadn't been made about him, the original Japanese movie had been made about him and this is a remake of it.

Not to diminish the tale or what Hachiko means to Japanese residents, but the reason there was a crowd there is because it is THE landmark people use for meeting each other in the area, because Shibuya is so sprawling and crowded “Meet at Hachiko at XX:00?” is a common thing to say to your friends.
As David McLeod mentions it's a popular meeting place but the statue is also next to Shibuya Crossing, which is one of the busiest pedestrian crossings in the world (something like a quarter of a _million_ people cross there per day). Film fans will have seen it in, for instance, "Lost in Translation" among others. Maybe the only time I was ever impressed just by crossing a road :). So lots of people there for a variety of reasons.
(and as a Scot the story reminded me of Greyfriars Bobby, though his statue is in a _much_ less busy churchyard below Edinburgh castle)

Someone once said that when you get a dog you're signing up for your heart to be broken when they die. It's true, but the love and joy they give you somehow makes it worth the pain of losing them.
A few years ago, my wife and me where at home for christmas, And we wanted to see a nice family movie, and we tought this was a hart warming movie. We both cried so much. Iam an adult man at the age of 52, and i never cried before because of a movie. But this one does. Even if i watch this now i get again tears in my eyes.
I remember lying on my sofa watching this film years ago on a Saturday afternoon expecting a nice entertaining dog movie and by the end I was bawling like a baby.
Also, there's nothing better than seeing two of your favorite reactors together as one. This definitely should happen more often and I am sure the fans will love it!
Your experience seing this film is very close to mine. Never heard about this movie, and didn’t know the actual story behind. Thought I was in for a “regular” feel good dog movie.

When I first watched this movie I cried my eyes out. Then I got my self an Akita 🐶 and now I have two of them 😅 I love it when they jump in bed with us and we all take a nap together ❤

The only film I've ever seen that broke me worse than this was Grave Of The Fireflies. I'm a grown-ass 57-year-old man and I freaking bawled several times when I first saw this.
This movie will definitely do that. It actually wasn't until I was 35 years old until ANY movie strongly triggered tears from me (that first one that "did it" was Pixar's "Inside Out" if you are curious). And actually, after that, I discovered that I actually LIKE to watch movies that make me cry (since I felt the feel-good brain endorphins that often get released along with tears)... BUT even after I went looking for more, it was really hard to find one that could "get me" again. But so far it looks like THIS one is "the winner" for that effect on me. And yes, Grave Of The Fireflies is on my "list", for whenever I get access to it. I know of some reactions to it though, and I may not be able to wait until I see the whole movie myself. I actually didn't "need" to wait for the entire Hachi movie... I've seen two reactions so far (not even the full movie), and both made me spasmodically cry my eyes out.
Saw this on tv at random while my mum was watching it. Saw like the last 3rd of it. I cry to this day when I think about this movie's final scene.
Holy heck, I never saw this movie and it took me back to 3 years ago when I took a stroke( 31 years old, 34 now.). I remember my dog "Spike" barking at the paramedics before I went unconscious. I don't know how long I was out, but when I woke up, I finally understood what happened to me. I started wondering about my dog and always calling home to make sure someone fed him "Spike' so when my family finally was allowed to visit me (at the start of covid BTW) I asked them who was taking care of Spike and that's when they told me that he got sick and passed away a week after I got sick. I just left the visit, returned to my room, and cried all day. I can't help but wonder if he was scared and alone without me.

I remember watching this in theatres, thinking it was just gonna be a cute movie about a dog. Every single pair of eyes were streaming before and after we left the theatre, there were so many of us recuperating in the bathrooms wiping our eyes and laughing at how much of a mess we all were. Good boy Hachi, you earned your forever rest with your master. I’m sure his heart broke from the other side watching his loyal friend sit and wait for him every single day. I’m also beyond happy to know that Hachi was never treated with malice or disrespect while he sat outside that station all day everyday. People these days are not so kind to perceived strays.
Some people were kind to Hachitaro, but others tormented him. I heard that after it became widely known through newspaper articles, the tormenting stopped.

The first half, where you two were smiling, and laughing, and giggling and loving the story of Hachi and his master, all I could think was, "Man, when Gere drops dead, it's is going to seriously fuck these two up....."
In 2015, a bronze statue of Hachiko and the professor who met again in heaven was erected on the campus of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Tokyo. It is a statue that brings tears to your eyes. A real stuffed Hachiko is on display at a museum in Tokyo.
This movie really only shows the sad parts - the story it's based on, Hachiko, was eventually embraced by the Japanese people and he had a lot of happy moments before his death. Many stories and even a couple recordings of him were made. He was a very happy dog.

This was indeed based off the real Hachikō that stayed loyal to his professor and died on 1935. There are various memorials such as a bronze statue placed in Shibuya station where he waited. He's somewhat a famous cultural icon being utilized in Japanese media and even in Western media for the character Fry's dog Seymor in Futurama.
Hachikō was the real life Argos.

Fry's dog in Futurama was another Tear Jerker.
When I watched this in 2010 I showed my wife and near the end she ran off to the bedroom crying. We’ve both been to Tokyo , seen the statue and to the museum in Ueno to see Hachi.
"I will never watch that movie again." That's exactly what my family and I said after we watched it. After we cried our eyes out. And here i sit just a few months later - watching you two - watch the same movie. Something strangely satisfying about watching another person have such a similar experience. Thank you both for sharing this. I enjoyed it.
I love Cassie and Simone SO much. I was blown away to see you two were working TOGETHER! I've never seen the movie because I knew it would kill me (I've lost too many wonderful pets and one of my current ones is ill) but I watched it with you two anyway because I would have "company." I wasn't disappointed. When Hachi was finally reunited with his friend, I wept streams of tears. I may never see an Akita again without hearing Simone sobbing, "We don't deserve dogs!" Still, you MUST work together again. Two of the most adorable and prettiest people on the planet? Sign us all up.

I agree... before I saw this, it was a tie between "The Land Before Time," and "Nimona" in different ways.... but I think Hachi is indeed the most heart-wrenching move I ever saw, ever.
it's been over a decade since I last saw this film. couldn't bear watching it again because it was so heartbreaking (beautiful but heartbreaking nonetheless). but this randomly showed up on my feed today.... on my dog's birthday. she passed away two months ago, and my whole life was changed ever since. my world fell. the house doesn't feel the same. i see her everywhere i lay my eyes upon. i miss her very much. i think this video randomly showing up is a way of her telling me that it's going to be okay, and that she'll be paitiently waiting for me across the rainbow bridge when my time has come, along with all our other pets that passed before her. and somehow this thought made me feel a little better. thank you for this video. hope you both have a great day.
This show was the first thing I watched with my grandpa that made him cry, he passed away finally losing his battle to cancer, his last action to kiss his wife, I hope he gets to see all his dogs once more he needed and loved each one a huge man who would melt and spend hours taking care of puppies letting them curl up on his belly, this movie will always remind me of him and as the movie says, we should never forget the ones we love.

Honestly, reactions with more than 2 people don't work. Too much talking, people talking over each other, it gets messy. And then there's also the dialogue of the movie.. 2 is the sweetspot, that's why I like Carly & Cassie together more than Cassie alone. Talking to the camera lens is fake in a way, talking to someone makes it more natural
No George. He dissects movies ruins them watches each scene trying to look for something to tear down very unentertaining. She should definitely do this by herself or better partner. George is awful. And her calling him dad just ripped his soul out of his chest.
That scene were Joan Allen goes over to Hachi towards the end we’re he’s old and at the train station ...and gives him hugs and kisses...had me crying like a baby..beautiful ❤️

"Hachi: A Dog's Tale” is based on the true story of an Akita so devoted to his master that he waited for him each day at a Tokyo train station. After the man, a Japanese college professor, died in 1925, the dog continued his daily vigil for nine years until his death.
It's literally a remake of the 1987 Japanese film version.
I can be a cold bastard but the story of Hachiko will always hit me hard. My favorite episode of Futurama has a story very similar to this, and it'll still move me to this day.

The foreigner who first interested in the story of Hachi is Helen Keller. When she visited Japan in 1936, she took Akita dog's puppy to the United States.
I used to have a big wolf hybrid. She looked scary, but thought people were here to play with her, unless she didn’t know you and you wanted to get in her yard. She really wanted to be a lapdog, and loved throwing a ball. She would run to it like the wind, but not retrieve it. If you threw it, you should get it, she would just let you know where it went. Best girl ever.

I watched a video on TH-cam channel and has funniest pets and animals stuff and this dog is like a half beagle and half dashound and in the dog's owner open garage ,the owner would pitch the plastic ball to his dog and then the dog has a toy big plastic kids size baseball bat in the dog's mouth and he would swing his whole head towards the garage door and actually hit the plastic baseball ⚾ past the dog owner .
@@richa.s9912 she could, but greatly preferred for me to throw it, so she could run like the wind to the ball, look down a few times so I could tell where it was, and then run back and forth between me and the ball until I gave up and went to get it.
This movie broke me in ways I didn't know I could be broken. You got through it better than me.
I felt similar after watching this the first time I thought I would never watch it again. I now watch it about every 1 or 2 years because it is wonderful. I cry about 60% of the movie. Being a true story makes it even better. Pure love. I love this movie and it centers me to what is important
I used to have an Akita. That dog was 100% personality, and I have more stories about him than I could tell. You also were unable to go to the bathroom alone when he was around - he had to make sure you weren't lonely.
From a dog owner. There are specific dogs that are non allergic dogs… Yorkie, Maltese are the two off the top of my head that a person who’s highly allergic to dogs can have. Edit 1: They are called Hypoallergenic dogs a couple other breeds are… Bichon Frise, Poodle, Portuguese Water Dog, Shih Tzu, LabraDoodle.
I have a Maltese dog I’ve had him since he was 2 weeks old today he’s 12 years old. And yes always right next to me no matter what I do
The thing which messes me up every time about Hachi is that dogs don’t understand ‘why’. So he died thinking that he’d done something wrong to make his person go away.
I don't think he blamed himself. I think dogs are pack animals, so they always worry when a member of their pack is absent, and in this case he simply had the hope that his friend would come back (and the commitment to be there when he finally did).
you two caught the fact that he sensed something wrong with his owner. there are service animals who can sense a seizure coming on. but did you notice at the end that he finally played catch? even if the first and last time. very sweet movie

Every time I travel to Japan, seeing the Hachikō statue is a must. :) The story is beautiful and so heartbreaking.
I had a Service Dog for 10 years. I received him shortly after he turned two. He had my personality. He melted the hearts of everyone he ever met. Because of him, I met many interesting people, from the cast of Firefly, most of the original cast of Star Wars, Doctor Who (in who's photo was the only time he smiled), the Boonedock Saints, Gene Simmons and Shannon Tweed (who's heart melted the instant she laid eyes on him), to various soldiers, Sailors, airmen, and Marines. While I worked in the government, he received his own security badge with the same clearance I held (one of the highest in the nation). In fact, one time a group of soldiers saw him walking with me, and one soldier cracked, "Hey look! The dog has a badge!" Another soldier standing behind him chimed in, "Yeah, and his clearance is higher than yours!" Everyone laughed. Then they gawker as he saluted (I did not teach him that).
He always knew when people were sad, and in those moments, I let them hold onto him. He brightened the lives of everyone he met. He stole every heart, melted every soul around him, and could professional soldiers into mush in about 0.000053 seconds. His face warmed the whole world, and I know he is in heaven, just waiting for me to join him so we can run around and say hi to everyone we meet. He was taken too soon, and too suddenly, but he will never ever be forgot.

Hachi was an Akita and they are working dogs that are very very loyal and protective dogs. I had an Akita/Chow mix we rescued and he was the best dog we ever had for 13 yrs before he was suffering from lung cancer which is strange b/c we don't smoke. When my wife would cry during a movie or something she was watching he would always perk up from the recliner he claimed and would go and get in her face to check on her and lay in her lap. She would fake cry just to get him over to her and it worked every time. He would follow me everywhere I went in the house and I didn't have to leash him b/c he obeyed so well. My wife knew when I was almost home b/c he could hear my Corvette coming before she could and he would also wander to the windows and back door to check for me. He was energetic all the way to his last day too. Akita's shed really bad and brushing and vacuuming was daily. When it was seasonal blowing of the coat I would spend hours brushing it out and just leaving it in the backyard and watch the birds swarm to get the fur for nests. We have a rescued pit bull and he is just a lovebug but our Akita mix will always be our #1. We would love to get another Akita some day if we can find a rescue we won't buy from breeders....too many pitties and other dogs being put down for no reason. Please Adopt and Rescue!!
I am a grown man and I cried watching this movie. A dog really is man's best friend.

I decided to watch this film at 2 in the morning a few years ago. I thought it was just going to be a wholesome film about a dog. By the end, I was at the edge of my bed crying my eyes out.
I love both Popcorn in Bed and Cinebinge and have been subscribed for a long time now, so this is so exciting and a treat. 😁 Lots of love to both Simone and Cassie and to George and Carly who aren’t present. ❤️
Primal fear is a Richard Gere film that is truly amazing in its story line. It is very thought provoking and intelligent. Films like this don't come along everyday.
Because Hollywood goes for the lowest common denominator.

I saw this movie about ten+ years ago and it broke my heart... I still tear up and cry a bit every time I see it (yes, I've re-watched it many times)
Akidas are amazingly special dogs who develop very strong singular bonds to their person. They want to be with their person and "tolerate" everyone else in the household... and are okay with other dogs if they are in the top-dog role (most folk dont recommend having other dogs when you've got an Akida)
I knew from the opening talk that this one was going to end in tears for both of ya. (**hugs**)

I have watched both movies, the original japanese and the one, and both breaks your heart in a thousand pieces, when i read that you'll be reacting , i said to myself, i hope sweet Cassie could handle it. The scene withe the wife and Hashi always makes my cries. Another dog movie that you must watch is "A dog's purpose" it is amazing

I agree with Simone that this is not a movie I'd want to see more than once because it's too sad. There are many true stories of dogs getting lost and literally traveling thousands of miles across the United States and somehow finding their owners after many years. A famous movie from back in the day about a dog doing that was called 'Lassie Come Home'.
While it feels like a made for TV movie, I have watched it several times over the years. I'm a 50 yr old man and have never failed to bawl my eyes out watching it, even knowing what is coming. In fact I'm crying right now watching the two of you watch it.
I convinced my wife to watch it after I had the first time. Her response with tears in eyes was, "Why did you make me watch that!"😂😢

When old Hatchi shows up I can never hold it together. He reminds me so much of my dog Koda, he was a red and white Husky x Malamute who passed at end of 2021 aged 13 😥 Beautiful story, just so hard to watch when you have lost a beloved dog friend

Akita owner here. The loyalty of the Akita is not overstated! They are this loyal, and even more beautiful. I don't suggest people get them though because they're not an easy breed. They will adore you and no one else, and tend to not tolerate other animals including dogs. Can be very aggressive towards other animals. Not an easy dog to walk if you don't know what you're doing, and dog parks are almost certainly out of the question. And the shedding....
But if you know how to handle an independent strong willed large breed and you can manage the hair... then there is no better breed.
